I am impressed with your set up but why not use an actual hobber. I think I paid 600.00 for my barber colman #12

It is a very nice video, highly educational and entertaining! I particularly enjoyed the hobbing process. My question is, profile shifting can only be applied with hobbing, or also with the more standard involute gear cutters (set of 8 pieces, according to tooth number)? Thank you again for sharing this nice video!

Thank you! No, you cannot make gears with profile shift with the set of 8 Form cutters- you will need special form cutters according to the desired profile shift.

@@prof-rieg That makes sense, you are such a good source of information!! May I ask, what are the manufacturing options for profile shifting, except hobbing? I suppose there is the "rack cutting" method (which I cannot find any video showing that, only found diagrams)? Any other additional ways to profile shift in reality? I am interested to do this, for horological purposes (working on an ancient clock called the "Antikythera Mechanism").

would it technically be possible to use a inside-thread cutter for the hob and have the workpiece spin freely and be turned by the motion of the hob? I just have access to a very basic Mill without powerfeed, a hobbing attatchment or a dividing head, so i cant really use the normal thread cutters. I am trying to make a replacement M3 Z30 aluminium gear in this case, but i find this interesting for any size for possible future projects.

Not at all! I know that there are videos in KZfaq around with such thread cutters but this won't give you a precise gear. I hesitate to say it but this is rubbish. Don't do that.

professor Rieg i should take my hat off by your eminence and regards.........i hope you consider to answer my little question (i´ll be more than appreciated) , why couldn´t I use free hobbing method instead of the syncronized? normally used in heavy maschines ?

Mr. Martinez, free hobbing is only for very coarse and unprecise gears - in fact, nobody in industry works with it. Truly, nobody. Free hobbing is an idea of beginners upon gear making and is not worth to consider. I hope this answers your question and many thanks for your kind response.
