Vegas saved Eichel's career. Not because of the way he plays and contributes in the playoffs but because they let him have the surgery he researched and wanted (the first of its kind in the NHL) and gave him the time and space to come back from it. Then, gave him a coach who knew how to develop his talent. Other organizations should take note.

As a VGK fan, I must admit last season made me question the management… I’ve since then taken back everything negative. At the time I’m writing this, the VGK are 3 wins away from a Stanley Cup, and Jack Eichel, as this video has shown, is a major reason why. This was all possible because the VGK management of Kelly McKrimmon & George McFee, instead of trying to force a particular surgery on a player without having the medical background to make that kind of decision (yes, you did that Buffalo), they deferred all medical decisions to Eichel’s preferred doctors, and the operation could not have turned out better for both the VGK, and Eichel himself. Now, Vegas, despite paying a pretty chunky price for at the time damaged goods, is being proven to be much better ran, and they’re not afraid to make high-stakes decisions for the betterment of the team. If the VGK can finish the job here against Florida, and Eichel is raising the cup, it’ll be the greatest personal victory for Eichel, and the greatest managerial win, that I can remember in a long time… any hockey fan should root for that!

The Detroit Red Wings did the same for Steve Yzerman when they let him have an osteotomy on his right knee instead of another procedure that other "specialists" recommended. It was a knee surgery usually done on older people just to improve mobility on aging knees. It was never performed on an elite athlete like Steve Yzerman. He played virtually pain free until his retirement in 2006. But good on VGK for believing in Eichel and then giving him as much time to recover from the surgery.

I say look at how Buffalo worked around him vs how Vegas worked around him. Buffalo put the C on him extremely early, and didnt build a quality team to go with him. Everything was on his shoulders and the fans piled up on him for not carrying them by himself. In Vegas, he was asked to play a roll in the team, not be the guy that does everything. That to me is why he is successful in Vegas, because he has other players around him that he can count on to get the job done.

You can hate VGK all u want...but their system allow most players to shine. Each can do their thing while still being a team player(in Eichels case he can afford to be more sefless and dont have to just score n score to win). Most players who joined the team did their expected role very well...and I believe the management can see who don't fit in long term.

I'm an Avs fan, but several of my friends are big VGK fans. They were NOT happy about the trade rumors with Eichel and were pretty upset when it was finalized. I remember showing them a few highlight videos of his and saying how excited they should be. I knew that if the surgery went well and he could get even close to where he was before, Vegas would have their first superstar skater. 2 years later, they can't stop talking about him and it's the biggest "I told you so" ever lol

Shit I’m one of the ones whom was all over the idea of Eichel to Vegas, and when it happened, I FREAKED OUT!!! Made the work day that day impossible to focus because I was so jittery of the idea that Eichel, despite his neck surgery, was joining the team, and the potential his healthy form could bring! Now, a season later, and at the moment 3 wins away from a Stanley Cup, I’d say my reasons for being so excited for him are proving to be true! I’m where you were at this time last season; hoping dearly the job can be finished so that the players we love so much can raise Lord Stanley!

Sabres made Eichel captain far too young. It also was not his character - at least it wasn't when he was 22 years old. Too much pressure on him to salvage what was a bad team. Now he can just be a very good player, as an equal member of a good team.

One of the fun things about the VGK v Stars was just focusing on Eichel for some of his shifts. It's incredible to watch him cruise without the puck and then take a pass in perfect position. Eichel was always great. He just couldn't stay healthy and he wasn't mature as a leader. But people like to blame him for everything. Buffalo made him captain too early and didn't help him mature. There weren't other star players he could rely on as a mentor either. In VGK, when everyone is healthy, it is a deep team and Eichel doesn't have to do everything himself, including leadership. He played 1/3 of a season for the first time in practically two years and people blamed him for the team missing the playoffs when the whole team was injured. He's not McDavid so he won't solely carry the team by points. But Eichel has basically been ppg his entire career and has never been a bust.

Excellent work on this vid ! Cards on table: I was myself a rather intense Eichel doubter until quite recently, and I'm really glad to be able to say that I was flatly wrong about him. Great to see a player expanding his skills and his game in a tremendous way. In the Stars v. Knights series, he was the best player on the ice, even though he didn't score. Just one crazy stat among others: Eichel accounted for 51 offensive-zone entries, while no other player on either team had more than 37 in this series.

By the end of his time in Buffalo it was, what, 6 years? And the team was actually going backwards. They were so bad they were able to twice draft #1, getting Dahlin & Power, which is why their future looks good now. But how did that look to Eichel when they were still bad enough to be getting the top pick in the draft after 6 years? You can't blame him for wanting out. Whatever obligation a player has to his team, the team has an obligation to put competitive players on the ice in a reasonable amount of time. If Edmonton was still one of the worst teams in the league after 6 years of McDavid, you think he'd still be playing for the Oilers?

I was “on the fence” about Eichel. I mean, we’d “sold out” Fleury, hired Pete DeBoer, who’s HATED by Las Vegas & EVERYONE needed a surgery. I thought “oh brother”!!! But Eichel’s been one of the BEST acquisitions we’ve ever had. The whole team is great. They mesh well together & I think having SO MANY injuries they had to learn HOW to play with everyone. Not just set lines. This season is very different from inaugural season. Stone coming back has been fantastic bcuz he just wants to win. They’re all pretty good at keeping & stealing the puck. Reminds me of Kovalev during the NY Rangers 93-94 Cup run. These ENTIRE playoff’s have been exciting. Every round in every division. So, having 2 teams who’ve been to the finals but never won, should make it a great series. Go KNIGHTS GO!!!

Jack is now mature, focused, and most of all, selfless. He may be a "superstar" but he shares and is just another team member. Bruce Cassidy is not only the best coach for him, but he has been the best coach for our team. Jack has managed to worm his way into the heart of the community by participating in community events, (just after the cup, he served chicken at a local fast food place), and he displayed his commitment to the team by participating in our annual Knights vs Raiders softball game. He actually cartwheeled into home plate to get a run! This playoff series has allowed him to shine even if he wasn't the highest scorer. In fact, and I'm sure a Vegas person will correct me, I can't recall if he had an actual goal against the Panthers. But he racked up selfless assists during the series. Jack and the Sabres were obviously a very, very bad fit. No chemistry, putting a lot of pressure on what was essentially a kid, and no structure to back him up. He is not a lockerroom cancer here. He is loving the love he is getting from Vegas fans, and has made himself an Intercal part of an amazing team.

I haven't watched the video yet. But this situation is not unusual. It's was a little different with this situation, as far as Eichel was a more hyped prospect than most. But still, prospects gets more than their share of the blame for not being the player they were supposed to be with that organization. A LOT of these situations depend on how the organization that drafts these players, function. If they can't develop these guys. If they can't complete a good rebuild. If they can't get out of their own way, and don't know what they are doing. The prospects pretty much have no chance. And the prospects take most of the blame for it. Buffalo botched their rebuild, and it didn't work out for Eichel there. Now, add in the fact that he might come off as entitled. Then he will get most of the blame for the whole organization's failure of their rebuild. And I think him being perceived as entitled, is a little overblown. He wants to win. And he expressed his frustration with that. And it came off poorly.

Eichel has a handful of goals, but they've all been pretty much irrelevant. Tacking on empty netters and padding extras on a 3 goal lead isn't helping a win. Anyways I'm so stoked for the golden knights and Jack eichel has been amazing competing with the likes of draisaitle and McDavid. He didn't score a goal during the series against Dallas but we still won anyways. I'm hoping he can come in clutch but honestly he is a great hockey player hands down.

What a surprise Canadian media hating on non Canadian players. They sure liked to bash Ovechkin until he lifted the cup at every chance although our playoff loses were never his fault. He always performed and that was with a defender and forward always on him whenever he stepped over the boards because they didn’t have to worry about anyone else.

Now that they're headed to the finals, I wonder if Jack's going to kick it into another gear. Not to imply he wants it more than any of his teammates, but he's 4 good games away from shutting up so many of his haters. Appreciate the in-depth analysis of his game. You can see his skill on display whenever he's on the ice, but the additional insight was great. His 2-way play has been excellent in the Playoffs. Looking forward to seeing what he does in the SCF. I know Florida will be a good challenge for him and the Knights.

It's a little to early in my books to say Eichel is great in the playoffs sure he won the SC but he played on Buffalo for 7 years goes to Vegas who were a really talented team. He was a very loyal player and tried to be patient with Buffalo but it didn't end well. He is a great skilled player he is in the league for a reason. But shouldn't he appear in multiple playoffs before setting the bar. It's giving him a reputation he could excel or fail to reach and add pressure. This is coming from a Red Wings fan

I always felt like he was a superstar and Buffalo failed to build around him so when Vegas got him they literally built a super team. It didn’t matter if he was damaged goods at the time and he might not regain the form he did following that surgery he was a still a monster on the ice. I don’t know if I could really compare it 100% to the phoenix suns getting Kevin Durant but Vegas was already a decent team before trading for Eichel and this year is proof getting Eichel turned them into a super team

It wasn't that Buffalo failed him it was himself failing in Buffalo. Not only we had bad coaching decisions/GMS but he also was a prevelant cancer in the locker room and his spiteful comments too fans also pissed Sabres fans off and players just wanted to get rid of him. He can get his surgery all he wants but he was also the problem in Buffalo.

If you look at who his teammates were in Buffalo during his time, they've had some pretty good players. His last season in Buffalo he had guys like Reinhart, Hall, Staal, Dahlin, Montour, Ullmark, Skinner, and Olofsson (not gonna include Tage and Cozens on this list). If Don Granato was the Head Coach instead of Ralph Kruger to start the 20-21 season, we're probably looking at a whole different picture.

@SpartanNige 329 agreed, vegas has been a competitive playoff team in almost every season since their founding. Last season was a perfect storm of injuries and struggling goaltending that caused them to fall short. The Eichel trade was a hail mary just to qualify and unfortunately it didn't work out. After last season i doubt anyone was expecting a healthy Vegas team to have the same season as that one, with or without Eichel.

@@sports2hedz542 McDavid has the 3rd most points in the playoffs and he didn't play last round. He didn't dominate the playoffs as much as he did last year, but he still played well. The goaltending, defense and refs (probably in that order) let him down. If postseason games were called like regular season (or even closer to that), Oilers would live on the PP because it is impossible to consistently defend McDavid and Leon cleanly.

I love Tuch and I'm glad both parties came out great, but I was/am so sad he isnt a Sabre, I dont blame him, and for me Ralph Kruger ruined 2 years of a very talented Sabres team, and so many players are in and deep in the playoffs from those teams every year. RoR won a cup and Conn Smythe, Kane is always in it and playing good for the Oilers, Reinhardt, Montador and Eichel are in the Cup, and I'm missing like 5-6 players that are eliminated that I can't remember, I hope Eichel gets it done even if it will sting a bit!

Everyone's right until proven wrong in the NHL. It fuels sports media and fan bases. Look at the pressure being heaped on Matthews and Marner. Why would they even want to stay in Toronto? I have no doubt they will have greater success and mature into even better players in other markets. Even Kadri has a Stanley Cup ring and Phil Kessel could win a 3rd!. Besides, who doesn't want to be proven wrong? Eichel's narrative goes head-to-head with Tkachuk's for the Stanley Cup. Both have already silenced the critics.

I mean people weren't entirely wrong about his past self, he did struggle, did have some maturity issues, and failed at times in big moments. I do however think that people exaggerated it due to the fact that he was on a garbage team and couldn't truly flourish and reach is full potential until going to VGK. Sometimes all a player needs to grow and become his best version is a fresh start somewhere else with different faces and systems.

Maybe the downing of anyone should be on Buffalo's leadership and ownership. Best thing to do for a player drafted by the Buffalo Sabres is to get out of town as soon as you can. Buffalo's claim to fame is wasting Hasek's career especially when he was at his peak. They give up on players over and over again just to see those guys succeed everywhere else. Jake McCabe, Ullmark, Reinhart, and others still successful once they left Buffalo. Dahlin will be the next scapegoat and be traded in a few years or let go. He will win a cup with the Kraken or something.

I feel that the NHl was right about Jack Eichel being immature from when he compared hismelf to McDavid, during his time in Buffalo right up until his first season with the Golden Knights, espeically with his comments after his return to Buffalo while playing for Vegas. However, Eichel is chnaging the narrative by his performance in his first full season and post season. He has matured in terms of putting in the effort on the ice, and his skill and playmaking ability has realy come ot the forefront. It remains to be seen if he can truly be a leader int he locker room, but hopefully that comes with age and maturity. I an say as a VGK fan, I was livid with Vegas trading for Eichel initally, as I felt we already had a potential number 1 centre in Chandler Stephenson, but watching Eichel's first season play out, I feel it was a much better investment now than it was last year.

I think there's also a narrative here. based on National stereotypes. Eichel vs. McDavid. The spoiled American vs. the good ol' Canadian boy who does everything right. We saw the same thing with Patrick Kane & Jonathan Toews, but they were on the same team, pulling on the same rope, so they kind of had fun with it. Eichel was always being compared to McDavid and always coming out second best. Yeah, because McDavid is a better player and puts up fantastic numbers, but also because Eichel had this show-off personality who wasn't serious enough about hockey (typical loud mouth American) while McDavid doesn't seem to have any personality at all (nice, serious Canadian). It's interesting that this year, I guess for the first time ever, the two big names, one from each team, in a Stanley Cup Final, will be American players: Eichel vs. Tkachuk.

@@serialmiller1987 Eichel is a series of unfortunate events. He gets drafted behind the greatest offensive player of his generation to the worst possible team. He wasn't a leader when they wanted him to be one, with the best players that stuck around were Jeff Skinner and Kyle Okposo. He wasn't the most mature, sure. He was a kid. But the management around him didn't nurture that. There weren't other leaders or stars on that team either to mentor him. Buffalo management sucked, had bad contracts, and no one wanted to play there. Eichel was the scapegoat of the blame as the team's captain. But he's truly never been bad, he's just had a villainous/baggage filled narrative. Any other team would have been glad to have him.
