Donald Curry was such an efficient fighter. Calmly going about his fight plan with perfectly placed shots. His focus was second to none so this video just proves even the best boxers can be pushed off their game by actions out of their control. His prime did not last long but Donald Curry was the ultimate ring technician. A quiet kid with sneaky power and that dynamite left hook.🙏🥊

If Curry was not motivated going into the Honeyghan fight, he should’ve been motivated after the first round! This interview seems to contradict what came out years ago, which was that Curry became a coke hound after he tasted the big time after McCrory. I don’t know what it is about coke but it certainly takes your game away. Same thing happened with JC Chavez.

One of the biggest upsets in boxing history - still difficult to believe to this day; got to give Lloyd Honeyghan due credit for believing in himself so completely, but this has got to rank up there as one of the top five turnovers in the history of boxing. Enjoyed the upload and I wish Don Curry and his family all the very best during these troubled times for him and his loved ones. He gave so much to boxing during his career that the boxing world, should now, in his hour of need, rally around and support him. My thoughts and prayers and with Don and his family. Did Colin also Lose a controversial decision to mccrory before the Curry bout? (For either the WBA or WBC) remember he knocked out a very capable and decent Kirkland Laing who to that point held a victory over Roberto Duran (said Roberto wasn't fully fit and one of his off nights but still a good win) and Colin ko'd Laing in the 8th round then did it again in the rematch,the same round I think. After he beat McCrory he was being mentioned as a possible opponent for Marvin Hagler. He should have went ahead to 154 after that fight but he stayed at 147 and beat Eduardo Rodriguez and then fought Honeyghan. He also wanted to fight Leonard but if you'll remember Leonard retired a second time in 84 after his win over Kevin Howard. He didn't have the Best management I don't mean that it was bad but just not the kind of management like Ray had that could secure him the big fights. Everything is timing and remember he had beaten Marlon Starling twice and top undefeated Nino LaRocha before defeating his counterpart Milton McCrory. I am not taking anything away from Honeyghan cause he was a good fighter but that wasn't the same Curry that night he looked dead at the weight. I do agree that he was a step below Leonard, Hagler & Hearns but it has to be disappointing that he didn't get a chance to even fight one of them.

Donald Curry was one of the best fighters in his prime in boxing history. His prime was short lived and eerily similar to Mike Tyson. People who saw him fight knew what they were watching. He was the total package. Unfortunately the boxing business robbed him of his motivation and it cost him dearly in the ring. I was shocked it took this long for him to get in the hall of fame. To this day Floyd Mayweather names Curry as the fighter he idolized and based his style after and says he is his all time favorite fighter.

If we accept that Curry lost because he couldn't get motivated for Honeyghan, then that just indicates that Curry didn't have the mentality to be a true great. Nobody knew Dave Boy Green in the states and look what Sugar Ray did to him. Curry makes a big thing about his previous fight being against Milton McCrory and that he couldn't motivate himself for the number one contender who was 27-0 because he was unknown. Bullshit. In the fight before Green Sugar Ray beat Wilfred Benitez for goodness sake to win the welterweight title. Tony Sibson was not a big name in the states and look what Marvin Hagler did to him. True greats get themselves up for every fight not just for the big names. When Don did fight a true great in Mike McCallum he got knocked clean out. I used to be a fan of Donald Curry but he has gone down in my estimation in this interview. When the chips were down against Honeyghan he displayed a lack of heart. Could you imagine Hagler or Leonard quitting on their stool? To give Lloyd no credit at all is very disappointing.

@@jabmalassie I agree with you that he had the ability and the potential to be a great but I cannot agree that he was a great. If you look at his record he didn't beat one fighter who could be considered a great. Marlon Starling was a world class fighter but not a great. Same with Milton McCrory. Lloyd Honeyghan smashed him into submission. Mike McCallum (who was a great in my opinion) knocked him spark out, and Michael Nunn and Terry Norris also stopped him. He didn't have the mental strength and fortitude to be a great. It is a shame because I was a massive Curry fan following his massacre of McCrory but unfortunately he was never the same after he totally underestimated Lloyd Honeyghan and basically quit on his stool. No great does that.

Curry's mistake was that he underestimated Honeyghan and was looking past him towards the big payday against Marvin Hagler. Honeyghan was an unknown in America and Curry thought that he only had to turn up to win. He could have been an all time great but his career never really recovered following his loss to Honeyghan and it was mostly downhill from then onward. I know that he did win the junior middleweight title from Gianfranco Rosi. However, he lost the title to Rene Jacquot who he should have easily beaten.

Was always a big Don Curry Fan - glad he made it to the Boxing HOF recently. Best left hook upstairs I've ever seen in boxing. I have always wondered though - if Don was one too dimensional and that was his problem - meaning one style - never changing the way he fought. I think his style worked great against boxers, but it didn't prepare him for rough brawler type street fighter guys like Lloyd / and McCallum. I think if Don Curry worked with a great Coach like Archie Moore on being more adaptive with different kinds of defenses, based on the kind of opponent - then I think Curry could have became the best welter jr Middle weight Champ ever.... It takes exceptional raw talent, but also strategy and great coaching to reach the highest levels... Good luck and best to Don Curry...

The difference between great fighters and ones who were on their way to greatness and lost,is how they came back or handled their first loss. Thomas Hearns was a great fighter,but,if he lost to Leonard then came back and lost again 2 or 3 fights later then lost confidence and just became a contender who maybe got the odd title shot over the next ten years or so of their career,then he wouldn't have had the heart that he had. But he didn't,he re grouped and came back beating Wilfred Benitez and Roberto Duran and having that great 3 rounds with Marvin Hagler. It's a tough tough sport and I doubt that I could make it in it. You have to have that heart that fighting spirit,I'm not saying Donald didn't have any but after his loss to Honeyghan and then Mike McCallum he kind of carried on but wasn't the great fighter he once was. This happens a lot,where boxers are pound for pound at the top then lose.

@@PugilismCompany There's been some queries lately from Tru School Sports about certain fighters quiting during bouts and them all being british,something "Your boy BT" (as he calls himself and is known by..BT..)brought up and questioned ,and although what I was going to say is different it could be related,and that is a lot more punch drunk sounding boxers from The States than The British Isles and why that is,and with the boxers quiting lately are from the uk which was what bt brought up. I don't know why that is but bt said that maybe 'SOME' British are more kind of civilised in a sport where it requires a warriors heart and before anyone has a go,I'm English myself from the northwest I'm not pointing the finger,I'm more doing 'THE DEVILS ADVOCATE' not accusing really just find it odd that I can't think of that many boxers from the UK that are punchy,it may be small over here but in terms of people you're talking over 60 million people if you include all 4 countries with England having the majority of 5/6ths of the number with 50 million,there's 300 million over in the states but my ratio is just a general one and there's a lot more punchy sounding boxers from the states,also alot more great fighters et cetera,seems to me in the fact that boxers who have quit, they are all British over the last few years Kell Brook,Amir Khan,Daniel Dubois and O'Hara Davies to name a few. In regards to boxers sounding punchy a lot before the retire,would you say there's anything in that or I'm just noticing certain fighters and I'm wrong,I can't be 100% certain and as it's me saying it it's not really devils ad but still,go through lots of British fighters of the last 60 years in your mind or if you're younger whatever time,see if you notice not many punchy sounding boxers from the UK or even slightly like that? And why (If you have an opinion) this is. Is there any truth in BT's claim off tru school sports ? Mind you he's only wondering in the way I am is BT and his in the quiting department,I'm adding on the punch drunk side to the equation. Do American fighters in the main have more balls or is it something else? Is it something in the training,that American trainers are more aggresive in the main? Or is it just a coincidence that the last 5 boxers to quit are all British,is there nothing in it really?
@PugilismCompany
@PugilismCompany 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulanthony5274 in my opinion you have to take in consideration how many amateur fights plus pro fights. Here in the states we have true gym wars and it a embarrassment to be known as a quitter because most fighter came from the streets and its a reputation that you most uphold. But it is based on your ratio we have more fighters that must make it through the ranks of the amateurs to show their bravado and through that wash you get the toughest, the best and the focused. The cream rises to the top in the end.

Curry has a little bit of a Texas drawl but is very lucid and speaks correctly. Now, I'm sure cognitively he's OK but he definitely shows some damage with the slurring. He took a lot of punishment in the Norris fight but can't help thinking those 400+ amateur fights, from a very young age have caught up with him somewhat. He sound nowhere near as bad as Hearns, Meldrick Taylor or even Norris himself though, in fairness. I hope he's doing OK.

God...what a shame...well on his way to a worsening case of pugilistic dementia. The kind of KOs Donald suffered in the last 5-6 fights in his career you could see it coming. Given the history of boxers from this era, he's probably in rough financial shape too. What a shame to give so much of yourself...literally...to the sport and wind up where he is and so many fighters do...really tragic

This is a very good interview. I don't think Donald is making excuses for losing to Honeyghan. He is simply telling the truth. He nearly signed to fight Hagler but Leonard talked him out of it so Leonard ended up fighting Hagler. Curry wanted to fight the best. Nobody in the US had heard of Honeyghan so he completely overlooked him. Curry was my favorite fighter of all time so I followed everything he did. At the point in his career, his management was in disarray, he did struggle with making 147, and that came back top get him. And he was never the same fighter again after beating McCrory. But he was technically probably the best boxer I ever saw. I got his autograph when i wrote to him during the time he was fighting for title. But it does happen. Lennox Lewis didn't prepare for Rahman and got knocked out. In rematch, the returned the favor. I wish Curry had fought Honeyghan again.

I am a boxing fan with no skilled opinion but I do contrast the happy-go-lucky Lloyd Honeyghan of today with the morose Don Curry. Lloyd Honeyghan was and is an artist. His Don Curry was a masterpiece. Artists don't go on creating the same masterpiece. Sure he was given a boxing lesson by Marlon Starling. Who cares. Look at his joy not at his technique. My fave Yanks were the Hitman and Marvellous Marvin. No one wanted to fight the Bodysnatcher. He gave other boxers a foretaste of hell. Ali was a matador given the wrong advice. No matador goes into the arena with instructions to let the bull gore you several times before giving him the coup de grace. As he did with Foreman. As he didn't do with Liston. When Norton broke his jaw he should have gained a bit of wisdom. But promoters are carnivores. They don't like legends. Lennox Lewis was the only one to treat boxing as a business not as a gladiator sport. Tho he was a victorious Spartacus who actually won outright victory and made his detractors look small.

He seems very punch drunk to me. He was a fine fighter, but I never went along with the view that he was pound for pound the best fighter in the world at the time. It was well documented that he was having problems reducing to the 147 pound weight limit prior to the Honeyghan fight. Although he lost to Honeyghan, I felt he should be grateful because had he won or relinquished the title to go up to 154, he may well have fought Tommy Hearns, who I think, would have destroyed him. There were also rumours that he was going straight up to middleweight to challenge Marvin Hagler, who I think would have been far too strong for him.

Then he makes all these accusations about Fury putting egg shaped bits of metal in his gloves and all the other pathetic excuses,so Fury asked him if he was ok and needed a chat or help to which Wilder stated "Hay,no,I'm ok blessed,I just want the third fight" et cetera. Wait a minute,didn't he just come out with all those accusations but STILL want the fight? Wilder knows it's all nonsense and he twice made a fool of himself. I laugh at people who say Curry wasnt that good- he beat the hell out of Starling the second time almost dropping him and Starling was a very good boxer as he proved in his career. Went over to Italy and ruined Nino Larocca and did it very easily. Starched MCcroy who was unbeaten in TWO rounds. Literally wreaked Colin Jones and made it look easy. In the Honeyghan fight before it even started Curry looked different- cheeks were all sunken in. After the first round I knew something ws wrong with Curry. Credit for Honeyghan because he seized the moment but lets not forget Honeyghan turned down a six figure payday for a Curry rematch years latter.
