The HOKA Speedgoat 5 is finally here and we met up with HOKA Pro Hayden Hawks to get all of his thoughts on this workhorse trail running shoe. With small updates to further fine tune the series, the HOKA Speedgoat 5 may just be the best feeling version to date.

It's amazing that there are no weak points in these shoes, this shoe is the best in everything; cushioning, responsiveness, grip, flexibility, fit, durability, etc etc...when described by company representatives.

Depends on the runner though. For me, the lack of ground feel and the narrow toe box make this shoe a no-go.

Speedgoat, such a beast. That's some sick terrain. I picked up the drip-mafate speed threes. They seem pretty similar..

These shoes are amazingly comfortable and are great straight out of the box, but I've found the laces really needs to be tightened down A LOT as the mesh upper is very flexible. When running on cambered trails or the side of a hill, your foot feels like its slipping to the side but you get used to it.

Loving these so far. Heard a rumour that Hoka is releasing a spiked version this winter. Any truth to this?

I ran a race this past weekend and there was a Hoka rep with new speedgoats. She offered me a chance to run the race in them. Since I was running in the 4's already, I took her up on the offer. I know it's a major no-no to change things on race day (especially your shoes!), but they were perfect! Would definitely buy a pair in the future. Also, was there ever a reason given as to why Hayden went back to Hoka after his brief stint at Altra?

He previously stated he wanted to love Altra because he loved their mantras and message. But ultimately continuously was injured wearing their shoes and did not consistently compete well in Altras. So maybe also $ but that was his statement.

Any negatives for road running besides premature wear on the outsole?

In my opinion, the Speedgoat series has always been one of the best feeling trail specific shoes for road use. I've done lots of road miles in the shoe and it feels great. There will be a little more wear to the lugs if use it on the roads but surprisingly, I've found it holds up pretty well. It's my go to shoe when I'm doing a run with a good mix of roads and trails -Connor
