This is our TV show Homelander talking to comic book Homelander. A narcissistic, disturbed, psychotic, ruthless monster. It’s sad because Homelander deep down wants to be loved by everyone but he ultimately can’t overcome the monster that is inside of him. Antony Starr deserves a Emmy for this and I hope he gets lots of offers after the Boys is finished.

I think it’s more the opposite. Deep down, he knows that he doesn’t need to be loved and that his past and his insecurities are not an excuse for he he is.

Both sides are monsters, in different ways. The need for love, while tragic, is still born out of his narcissism. He doesn't just want to be loved, he wants to be everyone to adore and worship him like a god. His superiority complex is so extreme that he can't decide whether he wants to manipulate everyones approval or whether he's so high up that no one else means anything and he should just laser down a thousand people because he feels like it.

I agree. I would add Joker vibes when he constantly tells Batman that he could be soooo much more without his “family” holding back his true talent. Heck, the show Gotham even had a scene where the Riddler tells the Penguin to let go of the death of his mother to channel his true talent. Shoot, I think all of us have those moments where we look in the mirror and that alter ego tells the truth that we do not want to acknowledge. 😢

I love the detail that the mirror version is so much more animated. While he stands still the man in the mirror is emotive and bouncy in his movements.

I love how his harsh alter ego calls him “Tiger” like a father would. It’s just one version of a fatherless, disturbed little boy trying to father another fatherless, disturbed little boy. So it’s cruel and pushy, and demeans and mocks him. You could imagine the Gollum persona as an actual grown man with trauma and a violent streak talking to a little boy, the Sméagol persona. Acting like he wants to give a pep talk but instead digging in cruelly and mocking the little boy for his pain and vulnerability.

I assume by shows end, they will have killed homelander. But i hope before that happens he gets even a glimmer of a redemption arc. On the outside hes purely villainous, but scenes like this show that he wouldve been more than that if he wasn't treated like an experiment as a child.

Homelander is the definition of the tragic figure. He would have been a good man, a great hero, if he had a family that loved him instead of being a lab rat. But he didn’t, so now he’s caught between what Vought made him and who he could have been if he was raised in a family.

He’s a terrible person but that goes to show you how well written and acted homelander is. He’s like Griffith from berserk, you genuinely despise him but that’s why separates these type of villains from the rest. They are some of the best written fictional characters period

The most likeable, and relatable character in the series. God forbid anybody had super powers- this is what it would look like. We’re all plagued by our desire to be loved, to be special, and unique. The lengths at which we’d go, well you just can’t know for sure until you’re there. When they DO get there tho, it comes at such a cost, that it sours the milk. Life is a tragedy.

For a moment a version of himself that hasn't been present in years challenges his ideology, he knows that he is wrong and he questions his decision to assume power based on his ego and not logic. It's a very brief at the humanity in his damaged mind, he is way too traumatized to ever let it out. He was never the same after events of diabolical pushed him over the edge.
