Hello there! I have a Ford Fiesta mark 6 engine 1.6 litre diesel engine which has a drive by wire accelerator. So I wanted to turn it into a power generator 220 Volts. Please tell me how many watts alternator should I install and what fuel economy can be achieved max
@Bodgemiester3 жыл бұрын
Hi, you will need to know the power output of the engine at either 1500 or 3000 rpm as they are the rpm required for a four or two pole alternator to generate 220v@50hz Then 1 engine BHP will generate approximately 750w. I hope this helps
@jimtheedcguy43135 жыл бұрын
I see on a comment you used a Fenner coupling, but my question is, would you be able to use a hydraulic coupling? I'm only asking because I'm thinking of using an automobile engine with an automatic transmission, and obviously a torque converter, but I'm not sure if that would suffer any losses or do damage as opposed to a direct to flywheel installation. The less I need to do and buy, the better. I really want to use what I have lying around the shop for the most part to keep the budget low. Engine is a GM 122 2.0 engine. Very simple, cheap and makes some decent low end torque.
@Bodgemiester5 жыл бұрын
Don’t use a torque converter, rpm on the generator is absolutely ESSENTIAL. just make something up, you could even belt drive it

Greetings. Can you calculate a homemade generator that can power a DC or AC motor of a converted electric vehicle? I suppose the Lister engine is not suitable because it requires a motor with speed acceleration. This in order to avoid the use of batteries, I believe these will be expensive in the future, and I do not think their waste is very ecological.
@Bodgemiester7 жыл бұрын
+Jaime Mariño can't be done, you will need either an ac or a dc motor and a vairiac speed controller. Old milk floats used tonnes of transistors hence the buzz. I suggest dc as it is easier to control. Work out how may Kw the motor is and spec gennie to suit

Would it be possible to use a car engine like a 2.0 diesel and power a three phase 32KWA generator?
@Bodgemiester6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, you must keep in mind that it is not the engines peak bhp you need but bhp@ 1500/1850/3000 rpm. Rpm depends on the alternator but it can be done because we have actually converted an old ford 1.8 diesel from an escort into a generator. All you need to know is how much power you need and at what rpm so 32KWA = 1.3404 (bhp required per kw) x 32 (generator output) = 42.8 (bhp@ required rpm) I think a 2.0 may struggle but find a dyno graph for your engine
@ctw72036 жыл бұрын
Bodgemiester Thank you. Also how did you mount the engine to the generator? It may seem like a stupid question but did you use a gearbox off the engine to do it or did you mount it without the gearbox

Absolutely correct, the amount of sets I’ve had on the load bank that won’t ‘pull’ usually a 3000rpm rated engine trying to make power at 1500 in my experience. The old 4D does a fantastic job though, pull a house down at 1500 all day. Thanks for the comment

hi bro , please tell me HP of that engine or CC ? I Made a genrator with 2.5 litre diesel engine which shpould have produced 30kw but eneded up with 5kw power !! whats the reason for that drop .
@Bodgemiester6 жыл бұрын
Hi, my engine is 4.0l. The reason for the loss is because your engine won’t make its rated power at only 1500rpm. My engine is an industrial engine so it makes high torque and bhp and very low rpm, car engines give low torque and high bhp at very high rpm. Horses for courses I guess
@donaldarunsaldanha73286 жыл бұрын
my aim was to produce max electricity production with idle engine speed [minimum diesel consumption] @1600 rpm, but i failed to get technical specs of that engine - torque & bhp. There are people succeeded in getting 30kw power with that same engine , but they keep the secret !!
@Bodgemiester6 жыл бұрын
How many cycles (Hz) do you need. Alternators run at either 1500 or 3000 for 50Hz or 1850 or 3600 for 60Hz. You cannot choose your own rpm, the rpm is absolutely critical to power output and can cause major damage if incorrect.

My house uses 30/40 kWh a day, if I could run that setup for an hour and fully charge a big battery, it must be cheaper than current grid prices of 35p /kWh!!!
@Bodgemiester Жыл бұрын
It depends how big the charger is but I doubt you could charge it as fast as the generator will output. Not like a tesla supercharger etc. But fast non the less

@@Bodgemiester I could use a 240v battery instead, not sure if my calculations are correct…but, 80x3.3v 105ah lifepo4 cells = 264v and 27.72kwh of energy…these can be charged at 1c…which is 105 amps..which would take an hour? Average fuel consumption of a 32kw diesel generator is 8-10 litres an hour…kerosene (diesel alternative) is currently 69p a litre. Making the cost approx 20p a kWh…nearly half what the energy companies charge! I’m now asking myself how on earth can I generate electricity cheaper than a flipping power station with old tech??! Hi really depends on the load and more importantly how sensible people using it are. E.g I CAN power my whole house on 1kw if I don't use the washing machine etc, but with everything on I'd be over 10kw. A 'house' isn't really a unit of measurement. If you were to be careful I could see it doing 10 houses if people knew what the could/couldn't use. Led lighting etc has helped enormously with this

Hi, this particular engine is a british made ford ‘dorset’, they made two types of 4d in Britain and were called the Devon and in this ones case the Dorset . We have had these engines in generators for over 30 years and NEVER had a failure or a cold starting issue. We also run two of the 6 cylinder turbo versions (6d) . They are really great old things. You can identify them by the type of injector pump on them. The Devon vas fitted to the fordson major tractors!
@rearspeaker63646 жыл бұрын
i worked around the dorset 4 cyl. diesel. they were installed in Powerscreen portable screening plants being exported into the U.S until 1992.on the minmac pump there is a cold start device on them,with all the vibration on the screening plant, the female flag terminal would fall off, causing a hard start condition below 50' .otherwise, very Tough engines! in the screening plant use, the throttle was locked at the injection pump at 1900 to 2200 rpm's so when it started, it went immediately went to that set speed-with authority!!!
