A very cheap and easy way to convert a scope into a night vision hunting set up. I did it for less than £30, but you may need to buy one or two other cheap items if you do not already have them. I list everything you need with prices to make it easy for you.

Hi Russel,. What an ingenious and well-described solution to what would normally be an expensive modification. I really enjoyed the video and your constant handy tips for installing the apparatus. I'm just putting a video together showing my, even cheaper attempt, at improving the visibility of my iron sights in low light conditions. Thanks from a keen seeker of low-cost solutions, Andy.

+Dieseluk2k There is something to be said for buying a fully self contained unit. I ended up buying a Yukon Photon XT. The night vision set up gives a much better picture than the Photon, but the photon is much less faffing about. If you do not have the cash, the set up will do the job easily for a fraction of the cost.

Quality! Ive built my own using your instruction. I bought the 16mm lense and the focus is not quite right, im awaiting the 12mm lense to be delivered as i think that should be perfect for my 4x40 scope. I also bought a rechargable lith-ion battery pack but the 6800mah one for £14.99 and its powering the camera and monitor for an average of about 5 hours per charge with no soldering required. Absolutely loved the video, and i hope my findings help anyone else whos thinking about having a go. my build came to £45 all in all which is a huge saving compared to the £400 retail price on a night vision scope. Cheers

Very nice. I have a super basic setup (no night vision stuff) that works pretty well. I take a small red led flashlight (about $8.00 from Amazon). On a couple of airguns I use velcro straps to attach it to the underside of the barrel. I can either use the low setting, or the high setting on that flashlight. On another air gun, I turn a scope ring upside down and attach that to the scope. Then I use the end of the scope ring, that is supposed to attach to the 11mm grooves on the rifle, and it will attach to the pocket clip on the flashlight. Or, I can attach the flashlight to the wood in the doorway of my chicken coop. That's where I am killing the pests, as they go into the coop at night for the chicken food. The good part of mounting the light on the gun, is that, it makes the rat eyes glow, and they are super easy to spot, and the red light gives enough light (on high or low) to spot my target. The bad part is, when moving the airgun, the light source moves, and can spook the rats off, unless I keep the movement very slow. Got one last night, and moving very slowly did not scare him off. If I attach the flashlight to a stationary spot in the doorway, then obvious;ly I can move the airgun (scanning the area) and the light stays stationary. That's good. But, mounting it in the doorway makes me loose a lot of the eye glow form the rat. I'd love to have a night vision scope, but cost is way high. Your system looks very cool and reasonably priced too. With my flashlight method, you can't cover a large area due to light movement. But, it can work well if you just need to cover a small area (the chicken feeder, or maybe use bait in a small area). Got 10 rats in 2015 during peak rat season, and 2 so far, as I just got serious about a week ago. I often go out, sit for 45 minutes till I see one, nail him, and call it good. One night last year, I think I nailed 2. Your system would be great to use, and you coul cover a large area scanning as you need to. I'm only shooting at 10 yards right now, and my stealth gun is a Crosman CO2 carbine in .177 caliber with a muzzle brake that makes it super quiet. I have also used 3 different Crosman multi-pump air guns, one in .22 caliber, the others in .177. I don't have a PCP airgun. My break barrel Crosman Phantom is WAY too loud. Just bought a nitro piston break barrel, but I haven't even fired it yet, so I don't know how quiet it will be. For 10 yard hunting, my airguns work pretty well. With your setup, I think I could back off to 20-25 yards (maybe with a better airgun, though the CO2 shooter might have the accuracy at that range), and that would be better for scaring them off. My system is just a cheap down and dirty method for limited use. The flashlight starts acting quirky if I don't replace the AAA battery about every other night.

Hello Jon, I used to use a red Cree torch, but found it scares the rats after a few nights. The set up on the video is great for taking out rats in your coop. I would sit in my bedroom with cctv cameras monitoring my target area. The cameras have infra red lights and I would monitor the cameras. Once I saw a rat I would carefully open the window and take the shot. It worked very well and was very effective. So much so, that I completely eradicated the rat population in my chicken coop. As you have found, mounting the light source on the gun highlights their eyes and greatly enhances the chances of hitting them. I ended up buying a separate infra red Cree torch for this purpose. If you are getting success with the red light then I would carry on as you are. The infra red is great fun though as the rats seem totally oblivious to it and you can take your time to get it right! Thank you for your comment.

Allan, I also got a bullet camera to make an IR scope. Did you have to remove an IR filter from the lens AND the CCD? I'm not sure if there's filters on both. The CCD sensor definitely has a reddish tint to it so I'm guessing there's on it. How does yours look? How did you handle the IR filter/s?

The 6mm lens will work fine. Lens diameter is dependent upon distance from the scope aperture. Basically, it is a matter of eye relief. The lens in your eye is actually quite small, only about 10mm. The point where the cone of light coming from the scope is equivalent in diameter to the lens of the eye is where the picture becomes both full and clear. The same is true of a smaller lens. The smaller the lens, the farther from the rear lens in the scope it needs to be. It doesn't matter the size of the lens -- if you have it in the wrong place, the picture will be blurry. The worse the alignment the blurrier the picture will be.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 7 жыл бұрын
+Paul Andrulis Hi Paul, from experience, I could not get a workable image with the 6mm lens. I tried to, but it was not possible.
@paulandrulis4672
@paulandrulis4672 7 жыл бұрын
The only reason that would be true (and it is possible) is if the curvature of the lens was too radical. Some backup cameras try to give a huge field of vision with a tiny lens. When this is the case, optics designed for the lense in a human eye probably would not work. It could be a simple issue with the lens from the particular back-up camera you tried.
@Sugarsail1
@Sugarsail1 5 жыл бұрын
The 6mm measurement isn't the lens diameter, it's the focal length. All of these M12 lenses are sold by focal length and f-stop, not diameter. The longer the focal length the narrower the field of vision. Most off the shelf cameras come with wide-angle lenses (6mm or lower) and through those lenses you waste all your screen space at the periphery and the scope itself is just a tiny circle on your screen. With a higher focal length, the entirety of the sensor is now focused on the scope instead of the entire landscape. It's not a matter of moving fore-and-aft either because you get black out from your scope and focus problems unless the camera is at the proper distance.

@@RussellPlatten something easier and quicker ( and for some cheaper) would be taking a normal digital camera or phone, take the infrared filter out, buy a cheap chinese infrared light and boom, you got the night vision. I build a wooden contraption to hold the camera and flashlight since i'm a woodworker but different people with different skills could build different mounts. Only thing i had to pay for was the IR light, i got a pretty decent one that gives me vision to about 30-40 meters (so about 35 yards?) Which costed 15 euro (13-ish dollars) shipping included.

Hi Russell nice video well made and well presented. I see you are using a reversing camera but these cameras have a reversed image built into them for looking backwards and when you use these cameras for looking forward the image is the wrong way round, left is right and right is left. Surely if you're going to all that trouble you would be better using a forward facing camera. I know you can buy a monitor that would reverse the image making it the right way round but most small monitors don't do this or have you found another way of doing it to throw it right. Regards Mike

Great stuff. One question if I may. Can any camera be used or does it have to be IR specific? Or is it just the lens that has to be able to be IR? Sorry if that's a dumb question! Thanks in advance, Bob.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Bob, Most cameras have an IR filter that blocks IR light before it reaches the video sensor. It is usually glued onto the circuit board, directly over the video sensor and looks like an iridescent piece of glass, magenta in colour. If a camera does not have this filter it will be able to see IR light and work in the dark if there is an IR light source. Lenses do not tend to have a fixed filter. The reason that most cameras have an IR filter is because a colour picture is much better and more natural with one. IR light present during daylight alters the colours on the video and they do not look natural. The camera can see the IR spectrum whilst we cannot, so the video colours recorded, are not quite the same as what we see. You should go for a camera that is specified as IR capable, however it is easy to remove most IR filters and there are several videos on KZfaq showing how to do this. This is definitely not a dumb question and is something I had to find out myself before I made this video.

How is a lazer pointer (you mentioned), the same as the infra red torch? Considering the build but I want the additional range. Thanks for the video! Well done.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 6 жыл бұрын
People use infra red lasers for accuracy as you can easily see them through the scope with night vision. They do not illuminate the area though so are not really suited for this set up. There are a lot of powerful IR torches available now that will easily reach 200 yards or more and that is what I would go for. I ended up getting a T50 with an IR LED and this worked fine. You can focus the beam for long distance or spread it out for shorter distances. It is more money than the one in my video though. I hope this helps. :-)

Excuse my lack of understanding, but if I looked thru my scope with a IR torch attached to the rifle why would I need a camera. In other words what makes this sort of setup a Night Vision? Does the camera have IR or ? Why does the Camera & Screen surpass my normal eye? This will be my last dumb question!! LoL! Thanks
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 6 жыл бұрын
The question is not dumb Rufus. IR is not clearly visible to the human eye, or the eyes of most animals. If you look at an IR torch you can see that it emits a dim red glow, but in reality it is very bright. The reason that we or other creatures cannot see it as a bright light is because our eyes are not capable of seeing most light at Infrared wavelengths, it is outside of our visible range. Cameras do not have these restrictions so IR light is clearly visible to them. Most cameras have an IR filter which prevents IR light from interfering with the picture, but cameras designed for use at night usually do not have these filters. When you use one of these cameras with an IR torch the area where the torch is pointing is illuminated brightly, exactly the same as a normal torch illuminates dark areas for our eyes. So the camera will see the illuminated area clearly. Animals will not see the light, so will not be spooked by it. We can see these images on a screen connected to the camera because the screen shows the images in black and white which is within our visible range. So, we and the animals cannot see IR light, but the camera can and it converts it into a visible image for us on the screen. I hope I have managed to explain it well enough! :-)

ive been looking into a cheap IR set up. Was wondering the right size car dash cam would work with correct size tubing and IR light mounted. Then use the LCD on the back of the dash cam for view. Would this work do you think?
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 6 жыл бұрын
I do not think it would work Alan as the lens would be too small you need a 16mm lens for best results and the dash cam will have a much smaller (wide angle) lens. If you could change the lens on the dash cam it would work a treat and I reckon it would be possible, but you may end up making a bit of a mess of the dash cam.

@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 8 жыл бұрын
+Wayne Hildreth Hello Wayne, not sure what the problem is, but two things spring to mind. Firstly, the camera may have an IR filter. You need to strip the camera down as you did to change the lens and look at the chip. If it has a filter it will look kind of violet coloured when you move the chip around in the light, without the filter it will be black. If it is coloured, you will need to remove this filter. They are usually just stuck on and can be prised off with a Stanley knife or other sharp hobby knife. There are videos on KZfaq showing this procedure. Be careful not to damage the chip underneath. Secondly, some of the supposed IR torches are not really IR. It may be that yours is not, double check feedback or reviews to see if anyone else has had a problem with their torch. My guess would be the filter and this is easy to check.

Adam Scott Yes Adam, either a 12mm or 16mm lens. I have tried both and either is fine. The 12mm gives the full scope picture and the 16mm gives a good view of the cross hairs but not the full picture. I prefer the 16mm as it shows the cross hairs without the edge of the scope view. You will not be able to see anything useful with the 6mm lens, it is not capable of showing anything through the scope. Thank you for your comments!

Ivan Nikolić Hello Ivan, that question is difficult to answer. I can see house lights several miles away through the set up, but shooting is limited by the amount of illumination the infrared light source provides. I had a quick look with a T20 and I could see at least 60 yards, but not as far as 180. The reason I have used these two figures is because I could see an oak tree that was at least 60 yards away, but I could not see the treeline at the edge of my garden 180 yards away. Sorry I cannot be more precise.

Did you have to adjust the scope at all to get the cross-airs to show up clear? I am trying this on mine, but the cross-airs are not very clear. The camera is in focus when outside of the scope, however when I put it up to the scope is not very clear. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I also bought an IR light, seemed to be same specs as what was described in video, but its not picking it up. I think there is something wrong with the light though. Sending it back to try another one out. How far out are you able to see? I am looking to set this up on crossbow.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 7 жыл бұрын
Darren, try sliding the set up towards and away from the scope to see if it comes into focus. You can also try adjusting the scope to see if that works too as the cross hairs may just need focusing with the eyepiece. As for the IR torch, your camera may have an IR filter. Look for an iridescent magenta colour on the camera sensor or the back of the lens. I am not sure this set up would be very good on a crossbow, too much recoil, however it may work.

I have successfully set it up on my crossbow! I bought a bullet camera you recommended, and better light than what I had, and also used rubber plumbing fittings instead of PVC. It works like a charm! I am super pumped and cant wait to do some hog hunting with it. I have done some target practice at night, and 2 out of my 4 shots were dead on. I just have to get used to shooting from the LCD screen. I hold it a little differently than I do when shooting with just a scope. But once I am used to it, it will be no problem. :) Thanks for the video!!

Russell, one quick question. Why is a 16mm lens better then the 12mm and the 6mm? Thank you,
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 9 жыл бұрын
Fabian Mac-namara Hello Fabian, the lenses make it look as if you are nearer or farther away from what the camera is pointing at. A scope is designed for the human eye and and therefore needs a lens that gives a similar field of view to your eye. The 6mm lens has a huge field of view which looks as if it is far away from what it is pointed at, this is so that security cameras look at a large area as this is useful for monitoring what is going on. You cannot even get an image through the scope with this lens, it is just a black blurry screen. The 12mm lens shows a smaller field of view and is OK for the scope, but it only shows the scope image as a circle inside the cameras view. The beginning of my video shows this with the image on the top right as this footage was taken with the 12mm lens fitted to the camera. I got the 16mm lens after I made the video. The 16mm lens fills the screen with the scope image as the field of view is even less than the 12mm lens and there are no grey areas around the screen. I hope I have explained this in a way that is not too confusing. Needless to say, the 16mm lens is best.
