Jimmy, Mark and Nick Laufenberg head to Missouri to meet up with Isaiah Curtis of Curtis Custom Weapons to build Mark’s ultra-high-end gun to be compared with the gun Jimmy and Nick put together themselves in the office. Isaiah shows us the process of mating the Proof carbon barrel to our Defiance action to a perfect fit from the lathe. Afterwards, the crew heads to Isaiah’s range to learn the best break-in process for these new custom precision long range rifles, and then test them out to 700 yards. Stay tuned for more videos from this podventure to see how Jimmy and Nick’s “Budget” (It’s all relative) build went together, and also Jimmy and Mark’s first test of the two rifles in a simulated competition format!

Hey guys,,,, one thing I think would be a good story / video to do is take a similar home built rifle and have the smith take it apart and square it up and see what improvements are made. Or take a shelf rifle and have it gone through and show the before and after. Taking a rifle with high end parts and a pieced together rifle with middle of the road parts is one thing. But showing what a factory gun can be when the mass production deficiencies are removed is something else all together.

This was a great video. Loved how he explained what and why while machining the barrel. I can't hardly wait until my next build.

This just put the final nail in the coffin for me. I'm building my own. Both are outstanding rifles but it really shows you how far technology has come that you can do it yourself.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the reduced diameter muzzle section on that carbon barrel is supposed to be removed completely. From what I have been told it is left over from the manufacturing process and should be removed completely before any crown work is done.

I asked proof about this and it is not suppose to be threaded. Some carbon barrel makers say theirs can be threaded but not Proof.

I love the promade👍 but I have a lot of time and pride in my homemade and I’m dropping 2in 5-shot groups at 500yrds and I’m still only $600 and some change into it but none the less great video 👍 VORTEX 4-LIFE!!👍😎🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸

There's a lot more pride in a homemade DIY rifle, a lot of time and effort put into something like that just makes it feel a little didn't.

That is one beautiful rig/platform Mr Curtis built... Mark is a 'lucky' guy... It was also a fun watch to see a caring professional craftsman produce such a fine piece... LOVE the tip on "Zippo"... NOW for the 'real interest'.... What is the can of "FLUID FILM" doing on the table... I use the product on a regular basis, just not one my firearms... How and why is Isaiah using it... That would be nice to know. Cheers Vortex... and CONGRATS to Mark on his fine piece of "art".

NICE! @Vortex Optics I'm in MO... and he is doing some very nice work. I build, or stick some things together if you will..... but I do not mess with blanks. Especially something like a proof carbon fiber. Does he have a KZfaq or anything ? Website? I'm looking to do another .30-06 build. This time focusing on a heavier freedom seed. Probably 208 and larger. Yes I am that guy. I love me a cartridge that's been proven for over a century, but also has 300wmr performance without the added concussion. And because 'MERICA! (Don't get too excited.... My 300 win mag will always be my ”one shot.... one kill” go to) But how convenient that I see my absolute favorite optics company post this build video, just as I start a parts list for a new precision bolt rifle. Perfect timing! Thanks y'all! Very nice bang sticks btw! God Bless!

Although for sure cost of a proper CNC lathe is to take account. I work on CNC lathes and this process would take mere seconds and it would be more accurate. All due respect to those than hand lathe tho because that is a worthy skill.

Awesome content guys. Well done. Quick question, do all custom rifle builders park their combines in their shop? Asking for a friend.
@highoctain113

If I had a combine, I would... There's one thing I have learned living in cattle country, raising livestock is hard work, I would imagine, growing crops would likely be just as tasking, but there is still a need for some farmer/ranchers to do other work for residual income. My family and I moved out here to change our position in life, if I had the cash in my pocket to purchase equipment and supplies, I would file for my FFL and smith for our low population area.

You can buy a defiance or bighorn action and a proof prefit barrel and be done, you’ll never get a barrel more accurate than a cnc lathe! You have so much error with an old lathe!

Eyes fixed, full of hope. Squeeze trigger. Deer down. Won't need another round. Big rack. Big buck. Listen, friend. It ain't luck. by : me for : george

Why doesn't smith check the action measurements? I know it is a custom and all of these things should be correct....but it just seems prudent to check before putting it all together.
