How to change the engine oil for a Honda Accord. The same concept applies to all cars. For this car, I used 4.5 quarts of 5W20 full synthetic motor oil. I also changed the oil filter. It was located behind the front left tire.
I change the oils roughly every 7500 miles. I also rotate my car tires whenever I change the motor oil.
Thanks for watching.

Friend, I hope this is well received. For your safety, and if not for you, then for the car, use a jack stand or equivalent. Never rely on the jack alone to hold up the car. There may not be clearance to drive the car up steel ramps, but they can be used as stands. Having chalked the rear wheels and e-brake applied, turn the front wheels full right and lift onto the ramps. I don't know if it's safe to do on this car, but lifting under a front suspension point that raises the wheel will usually give clearance to place on ramps. I honestly don't know if this car's suspension has the range to be lifted onto ramps one wheel at a time. But if you choose to lift it that high, invest in a large 2 ton low profile long reach hydraulic jack. Have a quality jack. Enough has been said about the wheel, but if you go through the trouble of loosening the lug nuts, go ahead and rotate that side, assuming front to rear switch pattern, and leave the front wheel off to access the filter. Wiping the oil off the flange and threads? Not necessary. It gets oily any way. Just clean the surrounding areas. Blowing into the filler hole? Not necessary, and it might start a new Japanese fetish. Honda blowing. Backing off the filter to make it easier to remove? Not necessary. 1/2 to 3/4 turn past hand tight and you should never have any trouble. Instruction on box. Oil is drawn thru the center of the filter and the filter is pulled towards the flange face in the process. The rubber seal serves as an air seal, not a pressure seal, so only a firm tightening is good. That is why we oil the seal face, so it can slip some. Some cars will suck the filter in so tight they're a pain to get off. If you have one of these, ('96 Cherokee) relax, its not your fault and "backing off the filter" will not help. It's just the nature of your car, and you're lucky if you have such good pressure. If your oil filter doesn't require a wrench to take it off, it is not on tight enough. And lastly the drain plug washer. If the drain plug has a bonded seal, like Fords, inspect it. If not, get an aluminum crush washer. Not a copper or other metal, and not a rubber. Don't reuse the old washer. Do not oil the washer surfaces. You want friction to do its job here. 1/4 past snug? look it up. Doesn't take much. I don't mean to be such a critic, I just hope to contribute something useful. Be well.

Thanks for the video I was just heading out to the garage to tackle this little gem and was not planning on taking off the tire... now i know, thanks. Just one tip for you when you go to install the new oil filter use a little of the new oil on your finger to lube up the gasket on top of the filter. Also it is a good idea to pour a little oil in the filter to eliminate an air gap and help the system circulate. The oil on the gasket helps prevent it from binding or getting a gouge should something like grit get in there during tightening. Eh its something I learned years back and it stuck with me for what its worth. Thanks again for taking the time to post the video and for the tire...

@lexusfan100 Though I maintain the ES300, I do so without passion. It's my parents car and I don't get to drive it. See the Chevy Prizm in the video? That's what I use to drive. This Accord is the first car I purchased and wasn't a hand me down. In one of your videos you have blue lights in your car. How did you do that? Is it wired to your interior lights?

I did an oil change on this vehicle using a steel ramp. On a flat surface and with quality rubber chalks, I turned the wheels full right and drove the front right wheel half way up a ramp. E-brake, park and chalk all the wheels. Works well. I could have driven to the top of the ramp but it wasn't necessary to get the clearance I needed and I didn't have someone guiding me.

Thank you for the video! If you change oil yourself you might want to consider getting fumoto drain valve with a nipple. And as someone mentioned earlier you can turn the wheel all the way to the right instead of removing it. Also some people pour some oil into the new filter - makes it easier on the first start and oil level judgement. With drain vavle you can easily drain a little bit of oil out if you overfill - and it makes oil change quick, clean and easy (no tools).

@lexusfan100 Hi lexusfan! I think we got the ES300 in 2001. Since the older model cars required more frequent oil changes, like 3000 or so, we use the cheapest 5W-30 conventional oil we could find. We changed the oil every 2500 miles because it's easier to keep track. I'm glad that today's Honda can go 7000 miles between oil changes. I hated changing the oil in the winter since I rotate the tires too.

Hi. This process will apply to your car. I don't know where the filter is located on the 2004 but you can easily spot it. Basically, if you look at my Lexus and Acura oil change tutorials, the steps are identical to this. Difference were minor, such as where to find the oil filter and that stupid under car cover in the Acura.

Check your vehicle's manual for their directions. I believe the older vehicles, cars made before 2007, required an oil change every 3000 miles. In the newer vehicles, you can go roughly 7,000 miles between oil changes. Basically, my car's manual said to change the oil according to the oil life indicator in you dashboard.

Thanks for posting; Suggest better leverage technique than Vise-grips at counter 209 which can gall the Ratchet Handle and slip at high tension. Instead use a combination wrench. Slide the box end onto the end of the Ratchet handle with the angle the direction of travel, it then becomes the extension. Bonus if you need more leverage, you can then place another combo on the open end of the first. Also agree with others when the filter is able to be installed level as with your Honda, good to pre-fill it so the system will not have a void when starting.

Hi. With my wife's 4 cylinder car, I would starting by pouring 3 quarts in when the car is still elevated. Close the cap, lower the vehicle, start the engine, and let it run for 5-10 sec before shutting it off. Then, I would use the dip stick to measure and pour 1/4 of a quart at a time. Between each pour, measure the oil to see if it reached the zone. Hope this helps.

I use Fumoto valve and it works great. btw Costco will have a sale on Mobil1 synthetic oil in February - about $26/ six 1qt pack. As alternative to 'fram' filter using a mobil1 extended performance and changing it every other time you change the oil could be a better option. Honda actually recommends changing filter every other time.

Manual on p. 318 says 4.5qt. not 5.You don't need to remove the wheel. I change oil in the same honda today. Buy original OEM filter . It cost $6 at the dealer.

As I mentioned in the video description, I use 4.5qt, but, I have to buy 5qt of 5W20 motor oil. They don't sell 4.5qt where I'm from... I'm driving the 8th generation Accord, I know the 9th generation is out but I haven't seen it. I paid $28 for 5qt of 5W20 full synthetic motor oil and filter. If you find it cheaper else where, I would love to know.

@bobthebuilder6938 Hi bobthebuilder6938. In my town, we're required to dispose the oil at the recycling center. It's easier for me to transport it in a plastic bag and I can just puncture the bag to drain the oil into their tank.

Why do you place a bag in a bucket? Never in my life have I ever seen anybody do this, that makes no sense, especially when you have to dispose after. No autoparts store is going to accept your old oil in a bag. Also, bag could develope a hole and now you have a complete mess!

At my town’s recycling center, there is a large drum we pour oil into. I poke a hole in it to let it drain to the drum. They then have a container for other trash like filters and rags so I toss the empty bag there. But, I have since switched to ValvoMax oil drain adapter to drain directly into a plastic jug.

You should be replacing the drain plug and gaskets every time you do an oil change on Honda’s.

i work at a honda dealership and used to do oil changes. what i learned is that the oil pumps are spot on accurate for the amount of oil while pouring in by the quart isnt very accurate. so if your car takes 4.5 quarts(all v6 honda's), dont pour 4 and half of the 5th and be on your way. check your dipstick, cus chances are you will add most of the 5th quart. i did this plenty of times. and sometimes i added the whole 5th quart before i was satisfied with the reading on the dipstick. good video!
