Please Note !!
I am sorry about the volume of the music in this video.
Please bare with it and know that I have tried to adjust or eliminate it, but it is not possible once the video has been uploaded. I have eliminated music in later videos.
This is the third video in a series of videos that will feature a step by step process of rebuilding the legendary Honda CBX 1000 6 Cylinder Engine. I will take you through every step from tear down to a finished running and beautifully restored engine.

Incredibly interesting to follow the restoration of this beautiful bike. I had a 1981 Honda CB750C which has the 4 cylinder version of this engine. I have wanted a 6 cylinder of this for a long time. What makes these engines often break even with low miles on the odometer? I think I know where the big aluminum piece is from 0:55 If you watch the video "Honda CBX Full Restoration & Engine Rebuild Video Series - Part 34 Alternator Stator & Rotor Rebuilds" at minute 8:05 you can see that the Alternator housing has a part that resembles the part that was broken off. And there is a part that may have been replaced earlier if the one that was fitted to this engine is not damaged. How much will it cost to do such a restoration? How much does such a completely restored bike cost? With kind regards from Norway

Great video as usual! I might have a idea where that big piece of aluminium came from. Have you looked at the part where ther alternator "clutch" plates are? The is a"wall" moulded on both engineside and alternator cover. It is for the oil spread that cools/grease the alternator. I found the same size and shape of aluminium loose inside mine alternator. There is a big hole down to the oilsump inside there, for the oilcirculation, where it might have fell down
@digitalpizza1
@digitalpizza1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon , that could be, the alternator was damaged by the fork lift that picked the bike up from the pile of bikes. So I will check that damaged alternator tomorrow and see. It makes sense. 😎

Again soaking the gear in apple cider vinegar for a couple of days will restore that gear back to new but you must oil coat immediately to prevent rust flashing. If you leave in for too long it will simply dissolve the gear or any metal til nothing is left of it. Only on steel & not aluminum. Great vids & Thank you.

Hi David Thanks for the tip Good idea I have the tranny all back together now (see latest video) I wire brushed the gear pretty good and it looks really good now and is soaked with oil. But I will try your method in the future Thanks again Pete

Hi John, Yes, I realized that after the video. In the video, I was inspecting the engine for the first time and was reacting to all the other crap that was inside the engine, and so the ring was just another broken piece in my mind at the time. Later I realized what it was. :)

The Yamaha XJ bikes have problems with their starter clutch and its the same deal. split case, i've got one and it was supposed to be my first bike. Now i'm stuck either attempt to sell the bike or do the work myself (never done that level of work). The more i watch videos on engine rebuilds the more I'm thinking of just jumping right in to do it.

As strange as this might sound... but that first piece of aluminum you took out of the engine looks a lot like a piece of a broken countershaft cover off of a CB750. I used to see the sandcastle cases let loose and the chain would waste the engine cases and the cover. That piece looks somewhat like the C/S cover. The broken ring isn't a ring.... it's a locating ring for the transmission shaft(s)
@digitalpizza1
@digitalpizza1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray, yes, I realized the ring was the locating ring which you will see in the later video. The piece is still a mystery to this day lol, that video is a year old now. You will see the engine is all back together now and beautiful. Thanks Ray

Hi Gant, Yes, I agree and I am aware of that. Its a trial and error process in the editing and on this particular video, I had to dub my voice over because I had forgotten my microphone that day :) Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I don't really like having the music anyway, so I am going to cut down on it and figure out a different method for the back ground effects. I may just talk through the majority of the videos with a touch of music here and there.

You keep saying vapor lock, don’t you mean hydrolock? Vapor lock is when (mainly in older engines) the fuel gets too hot and doesn’t mix correctly in the carburetor, causing the engine to die. I’ve had cars vapor lock on me in the past, they won’t start but certainly never totally locked up an engine causing a bent rod.

Good job! I’m a subscriber now! ... But... Dude, the ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE “music” is RUINING your videos! When push comes to shove, it’s better to have NO music than to have HORRIBLE noise that makes viewers run away from your videos. You’re good at what you do, and deserve more subscribers, but it’s not going to happen when people have to turn away from your videos, or turn the sound down and potentially miss something you have to say... You have a lot to offer here, man... Put your videos on normal speed and just talk to us and let the video be as long as it wants to be. You don’t have to have short videos anymore... I actually now tend to AVOID watching short videos... Look up the “Mustie1” channel for reference... NO MUSIC, LLLONG videos, and he just talks to us like we’re standing there with him and watching... Follow his lead, man! And, PLEASE, LOSE THE CRAP MUSIC!

I wish KZfaq provide a way to edit it after it's been posted, but I would have to delete the video, then re-post it loosing all of the views etc. Bummer, lesson learned. I am excited about the next videos coming up as they will be the start of the re-assembly of the engine. I have all the parts I need now for that, so it will be exciting to see this former boat anchor come alive again :) Thanks Pete
