Between the Honda City, Nissan Almera, and Geely Emgrand in the Philippines, who will come out on top? Among these subcompact sedans in the country, which one is the best value for money? All of the models come with frugal engines and CVTs, but the Almera's the only turbocharged option among the three. Does it stand a chance? Or will the Honda come out on top like it usually does? Or perhaps the Geely Emgrand will rip open a new slot in the running for best subcompact. Find out in this Comparo between the City, Almera, and Emgrand.

Almera might have lost by technicality of the pointing system but it wins on the things that matter the most. Driving performance and fuel efficiency. The other categories that City and Emgrand won on looks and accessories are mostly on preference. In my opinion, all in all, Almera actually won this comparo.

Gotta agree on you. There are some things that buyers might not need really like apple car play and android auto however when it comes to engine performance that's something you can't really overlooked.

all that being said, I think so too.. I have the old almera, it's really an intriguing car from an owners perspective. It's a pretty meh looking car stock, but owners seem to just fall in love with it coz I think the driving experience is something not talked about consciously. Quite lacking on acceleration, but handling is something, no issue goin up mountains and fuel efficiency is there. And when compared to the Vios, I'd prefer it to the superman and maybe a slight edge against the batman. From the details discussed here, it seems that the new Almera has the old ones feel carried over with more driving capability despite engine config and with a modernized look. May I just add that the old almera has a mindboggling rear passenger space, I've tried pushing the front seats all the way forward, you can do a few things back there lol. Yet the new almera seems to have just comparative rear space to its current rivals when I peeked at it in the show room.

And for some car guys who has a deep knowledge about cars and engine will surely prefer a reliable and fuel efficient car with a some safety tech here and there that will get you from point a to b regardless of the type of road rather than something that will put you in a state of worry thinking if you'll be able to reach your destination.

Sorry but I disagree. You say the City and Emgrand won on looks and accessories? Maybe you are only referring to the Emgrand? Actually, the City was placed third in that category with only one point. This might be a different story if we are comparing the City RS given its sporty look and aggressive LED headlights. On the driving performance, the almera is the most fun to drive but according to caco, the city is not far behind plus 10L more in the fuel tank which means lesser visit to the gasoline station. If you check, Fuel efficiency is actually the same. Honda City won the comfort category. It has the most comfortable passenger seats with better material plus the aircon vents. Honda City also won the Boot Space Category. Honda City has cruise control with more airbags. On the other side, The Almera has no cruise control, lesser airbags, lesser fuel capacity, the only one with no aircon vents at the back given the hot weather here in the philippines, smallest boot space, a little rough fabric material, requires a more expensive 95octane fuel, and the most expensive of the three. Emgrand will be hard to beat given its price. 💯 Value for Money. But reliability, durability, parts availability, after sales service, resale value are also some factors that are needed to be considered by the buyers. I honestly think that Caco is on point with this comparo🙂👌

Almera is the best for Cebu amongst the 3, in my view at least. We have city and mountains, not much highways and no expressways as vast as Luzon and Mindanao. The 35L tank is not going to be a problem as well because with a fuel efficiency of 18 to 22km/l, you're looking at 650 to 770km per full tank. Even if we drop that to a conservative 15km/l that's still 525kms. That's about 18 to 25kms a day for a whole month. Cebu island is only 256kms north to south. Cebu City is only 15kms north to south. So yeah, our odometers are not so banged up. The Honda City comes a close second. All a matter of preference, really, and how it adapts to your location, what you use the car for (mainly) and yeah, let's add loyalty and past experience with the brand haha. Granted, I was expecting the Almera to be a tad bit cheaper but it is what it is.

@@jannogives1981 my guess is, if you have no plans in replacing your car after 5 years, get the Vios. Currently has more parts and more reliable. But if you are planning to change your car every 5 years, get the emgrand. But still, the vios is the better choice as it resells at higher cost than Geely. Geely is still a new player and especially the emgrand. So it’s hard to know what problems might come up in the future.

using my Nissan Almera for 9 months now. if you're on the lookout for a subcompact sedan, highly recommend this one. it's a fun car to drive, very peppy even with the smaller engine thanks to that turbo. especially fun driving on expressways. fuel economy has been around 9-12 km/l in the city on speeds ranging between an average of 25-50kph. On mixed to highway driving, i usually get 18-23 km/l. CVT is also great, 95% of the time there is no delay. Only very seldom when the car seems to not move as soon as you depress the accelerator. PMS cost is also quite cheap. PS. If you're around Laguna/Quezon, avoid Nissan Lipa dealership as they have poor customer service and it took 6 months before I got my freebies and 8 months before I got my LTO license plate.

I just got my CITY RS 2022. Only quite disappointed with the instrument cluster that looks like as basic and downgraded; the suede and cloth materials combination with leather; the fixed rear headrest and lastly the reverse camera that looks cheap. But still I would pick my City RS over the two competitors.

I'd go for the City simply because of reliability. Geely's are very attractive on their features and price points but reliability and longevity questions still remain unanswered. Not to mention the parts availability. Only time can tell. As for the Almera, it is not really a bad choice but as a Navara owner, Nissan probably has the WORST service, plus Nissan parts are overpriced as well as their PMS.
@Tatay-Mong-Kalbo
@Tatay-Mong-Kalbo 2 жыл бұрын
I own a Navara and A Honda BR-V and I would say that in terms of parts and services, they are pretty much the same. I wonder why you seem to have a bad experience with Nissan's service(?). I would agree that Honda's service is better but I would argue that Nissan's is not that bad in comparison. In terms of PMS, it usually depends on which dealership you go to and you can always revise the PMS quotation based on what you think is essential and necessary. I expected more from Geely, probably because of the hype and sales of the Coolray and that they are competing with more established, (relatively) more reliable brands. I think that they could have equipped the Emgrand with a more powerful engine to make a dent in this segment. I considered buying the Honda City at one point, but then decided to purchase the BR-V instead -- based on this review and given the 3 choices, I would buy the Almera. Honestly though, if I am going to buy another car, I would keep my Navara, sell my BR-V and buy me a Geely Coolray.😉

Not to mention few good dealerships for after sales service, good numbers of available fast moving parts and much more. But thanks to Geely Emgrand, I believe few years from now most Japanese and Korean automakers will catch up with the features that Chinese automakers are offering with the price range. I go with almera when it comes to ac , comfort and fuel efficient. Na drive qna ang Almera from Davao to Manila, sobrang tipid sa gas . Even trip sa Baguio, I don’t have any issues kinaya yun mga uphills na tatlong beses inakyat na tuloy tuloy partida puno ang car ejeje…😅 nasa pag aalaga at driving skills yan, choose the car you feel suits your needs. ❤drive safé!

They completely ignored that the Almera is the only one in the segment that has some ADAS like AEB and FCM. They always fail to mention the safety features.

There's a sport mode with that variant of Almera....the sport mode button is located at the back of the lever...maybe you did not notice it coz there's no label for sport mode...just try to check it...

I wish you calculated it by averages. Because not all categories are equal. Example the engine and cabin space. I would argue the engine performance is the highest point system, thats why i think the city won. I wish you would consider changing your pointing system. And dont put 1,2,3 just put a point in every category like 9 points 7 points or 3 points then average those

As a Honda City 2021 owner, I will choose still the Honda City. I already test drive the Almera and Emgrand. Yes, Emgrand have very nice interior and Almera has turbo, but the Honda City is more satisfying between these 3 cars. Fuel efficiency, the power you need is there and the it can provide you speed when you need it. Also the looks, it’s a really a head turner.

Almera for me. It may not provide me the added features of Emgrand, its the engine I consider carries the points for me. I had the Almera on the sides to choose among its same category autos, but your experience of its engine made me think otherwise. After sales parts of Nissan/Honda have been in the market since. My two cents, Mr. Caco Tirona👍

Been driving the Almera Turbo VLT specs for a year now, and it has been promising since day 1. Tried many (City, Vios, etc) before purchasing, but this Almera Turbo just gives me the best driving feeling and experience especially if you're more handling-oriented. One thing I must point out regarding the highest spec of the Almera Turbo, is that the disadvantages mentioned in this vid regarding the airbags, cruising control, and aesthetic are thoroughly nullified.

And he didn't mention about AEB and FCM in Almera. Safety is the most important other than duel consumption, and driving experience.

i remember the first time i drove an Automatic and it was the newly launched 2022 Nissan Almera VL. Manual user ako, so nung dinadrive ko siya nanibago ako sa auto start/stop ng engine kapag nasa traffic, i even found it annoying at some point. pero now, narealize ko na ang laking tulong pala nun.

I still go for the city we have to admit in some years it is the highest resale value compare to those two cars. I really like the almera but with that turbo it is another expense to be prepared if broken down/maintenance. Looking for a safe city car i still go for the honda with the RS variant.

The fact that it gives you all the "toys" you want in a vehicle does not mean you got "all that you need and will always be necessary". Being the most affordable in terms of price point, I mean it will lack something else, Yes? But where? Hmmm... Still, exceptional review Caco! 🙌

I will always go for engine performance, I can live without the safety features like reverse camera/ 360 camera and parking sensors even a good infotainment system! As long as it has a Bluetooth I'm good to go!! Nothing beats the enjoyment you have if u knew that your engine is capable and can match it to the things that you want to do with it! 😄

It is nice if you change the points system. Instead of ranking type of doing the points, better if it is scoring system. Like you rate each and every segments 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. After that, you get the average score.

You can never go wrong with the city but there’s one thing I don’t like about it, the radiator and condenser fan can break faster than other brands sabi nga ng iba “sakit na ng honda yan”. That's the only issue I had with mine before I sold my city, though it can be fixed by cleaning the carbon brush or just buying a fan motor(aftermarket). I love our Honda City and I still miss it everyday.

You could actually downshift on the city even on D mode going downhill, just press the brake pedal for a sec then release, it will sense you are going faster at your current engine speed so it will downshift, increase rpm, engine brake

I might be biased pero nissan's reliability is on top. We have 2 nissan cars. Almera 2014 and Livina 2011. We've been using Nissan Livina since 2011 and until now nakakaakyat pa rin ng baguio (though may issue na lately paakyat ng baguio). Yung engine niya malakas pa rin. Sa almera medyo hirap and alalay ka paakyat ng baguio pero safe na safe pa rin nakakaakyat. Iyak lang tayo sa maintenance and price ng parts ☹️
