Thanks for the review. I’ll miss the two speed gearbox the old models had. Really made for a fast power shift between dirt and road without having to change sprockets.
@spydie3 жыл бұрын
Yes, all of us old owners of the originals miss the two-speed gear box. The guys that never had it don't think it's a big deal. But it is. It makes the bike a lot more useable. I doubt it will ever come back. The only way to overcome it is either to put a 5-speed tranny on this with very low, low-gear, or give us a 175-200cc engine so we'll have enough power without changing out sprockets. Neither one of those will probably ever happen either. So we gotta just enjoy it for what it does. It's a fun bike to own and ride, but it's not great at any one thing. It's only mediocre at everything. It's underpowered and dog on the highway, and not much better on steep trails. The only thing it's good at is riding fairly good trails and going slow. It's most at home on two-lane mountain roads that you could drive a jeep up.
@mikehahn8593 жыл бұрын
Yep. It was still underpowered, but like thousands of others, I “caught the bug” riding an old CT90 in the late 60s and early 70s. I guess I’m just nostalgic about my original freedom machine.

Probably already tried this, but using some speed wax and a slow cooker you can drop the entire chain into the wax. Do it for bicycles and it's great for dry weather and dust.
@spydie3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how pure wax would hold up on the rigors of a motorcycle chain. There's no anti-corrosion involved with pure wax. The wax-based spray chain lubes have more properties than just wax. Motorcycle chains get hot and pure wax would drop off I think. Bicycle chains don't go that fast.

Glad to hear you didn’t like the bike much when you first got it and feel better about it now. I, too, have a Vespa and other bikes and the difference is substantial. Not having either a clutch to feather or a belt always engaged makes compression braking just weird with that centrifugal clutch. I don’t have a lot of miles on mine yet and I’m hoping going slowly without the clutch constantly clicking in and out will get better as I find which speeds to avoid. I was thinking a 13 tooth front would help that but if the ABS is going to be finicky about that I’ll avoid it. Though I’ve not considered many of these mods to mine this was a very informative video.
@spydie2 жыл бұрын
I didn't like it after I had 1500 miles on it either. you could squeeze 50-55 mph out of it on a good windless day on a flat road but it's really a 45 mph bike (the old CT110 was a 40 mph bike). I just couldn't go anywhere fast enough and running a bike wide-open all the time just isn't wise. The best upgrade is a 42 tooth rear gear. A 13 tooth front tooth is like a 3 tooth change on the rear. So the 42 rear is a good compromise. A 13 tooth front was good for off-road only but it really killed your top speed. You won't lose any top speed with a 42 rear and you'll gain a little power off-road. A 42 tooth rear also didn't affect the ABS. The 13 tooth did. I sold mine to a guy in Poland and bought a Yamaha XT250. Much happier. But I love the looks of the CT125. If they ever came out with a 200cc I'd buy another one.

@@spydie I really don’t need the speed where we are and for what I need it for. I needed a bike that would go 7 miles to our river camp drive, the mile down the drive to the camp and then get me up and down the 150’ hill a few times during the day to keep me from wearing out. The roads are all 45 mph and lower and I can get to town and shopping on it without needing to go over 45. Still, not nearly as refined as the Vespa.

@spydie2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they say you should do it when the chain is warm. Personally I can't tell any difference. And you can find one if you are willing to drive to another state to get it. Some guys have driven many hundreds of miles to pick one up. All bikes are scarce right now, not just the CT. I had to drive over 600 miles round trip to get my XT250 and over 500 miles to get my Kawasaki W800 and my Moto Guzzi V7 Centenario 850. But a lot of guys drive a lot farther than that. And if you wait until you can find a CT sitting at your local dealer, you'll probably never get one. They are pretty much spoken for in advance unless you live in an area where they aren't selling well.

I don't own that bike anymore having sold it with only 1500 miles on it. I was disappointed in it.

@@spydie I'm still trying to get used to the no clutch thing and I'm still up in the air about it. Thanks.
@spydie2 жыл бұрын
@@shinyblind That wasn't a problem for me because I'd owned two CT90s and two CT110s in the past so I was used to it. I hear there's a rumor that it will be a CT150 next year. We'll see. It really needs a bigger engine to be roadworthy, but in my opinion it needs a minimum of 175cc and preferably 200cc. And they really need to go back to the 2-speed transfer case for slow off-road work. This thing is way underpowered in it's only (high) range. If you get it stuck in the sand or the front tire against a rock or log, you can open the throttle full and it will just sit there and grunt. It doesn't even have enough power to spin the wheel. It was a big disappointment over the old CT110 which was a 40 mph bike. These are really a 45 mph bike so it didn't gain much and it lost low range which it really needs with that automatic clutch. The Monkey is a better bike for off-road because you can work the manual clutch to break the tire loose when you need it or feather the clutch. I thought this was going to be a big upgrade to the old bikes but I was disappointed as I feel it was a downgrade.

Chromium plate is fine if you live in the desert !! Not so if you live in a country that ladles the salt onto the roads in winter. Stainless steel would be a better all round option. I like your videos. keep them coming please.
@spydie3 жыл бұрын
I lived in Wisconsin for 37 years but never rode my bikes in the salt, so I have never seen chrome go bad. But I've seen painted items get rust under them from the salt. Any scratch in the paint and it will start rusting off. So if you think painted junk is better than chrome, you'll find out that's not the way it works. The painted parts on our bikes (rims and carry rack and all the rest) will rust just as quickly as chrome in the road salt because you'll get scratches in the paint just like the chrome did.
@johnfew51453 жыл бұрын
@@spydie I don't ride my bikes from November to March (England) because of salt. My impression is that cars certainly have good paintwork these days. My car is 15 years old and in quite good nick paintwise. Cars from the 60s and 70s tended to rust out in 5 or more years. I get the impression that the paint on bikes is good too these days, but not so good if it is painted aluminium. No sign of the Honda CT125 here yet.
