Replacing the surface mount IC502 in a faulty Honda Jazz radio. This is the fix for no radio audio (well, perhaps a bit of low static) with the CD player working fine

It worked for me. But I used a regular soldering iron and that was such a pain. I do recommend using whatever is used in the video, it's way more effective. Thank you sir.

Yeah hot air makes this job a lot easier. I use the Quick 861DW station for this kind of rework. Thank you for your comment 🙂

So I'm giving the repair a go... First time for me with a circuit board so pardon my french, when unsoldering the piece one of the four metallic things came off the board (the one closest to what looks like a small battery) is this very bad? Or can I just replace it in its spot and carry on? Thank you for your wisdom!

@@alexanderfrederiks8481 Brilliant. Yup, its an easy enough job. I think the only thing I'd say is for anyone doing this to make sure that the metal tab is soldered down properly to the PCB as thats how it dissipates heat. Thats why I like using hot air for that kind of thing, it melts the solder evenly right onto the Tab and the Copper PCB pad. But a decent soldering iron and flux will do a good job too. Glad you fixed it and stoked you found my video useful.

Congratulations for your video, I have one question, why you replaced the BA00AS (low drop-out variable output voltage regulator) with the 08CCOW (low drop-out fixed 8 volts output voltage regulator)? If Ι am not wrong the BA00AS is adjusted through the smd resistors 133( = 13KΩ) and 222 (2.2KΩ) for about 8,625 Volts and is also available from internet shops. Thank you in advance.
@the_equalizor3 жыл бұрын
IIRC I had difficulty sourcing the Variable Output version, so I replaced it with the 8v fixed output. The package type, specs and pinout are identical except pin 5 which on the 00 is used to for voltage adjustment and on the 08 is left unconnected. This means that the voltage set resistors on the PCB are ignored by the fixed output regulator.

Just Kingbo RMA-218 flux to assist with soldering/hot air work, and isopropyl alcohol for cleanup.

My radio doesn't work but the cd player does, however there's no static noise even at maximum volume and it's stuck on one radio station and it's impossible to change station. Do you think it could be the same problem?
@the_equalizor3 жыл бұрын
Sia D Yes, that’s exactly how the issue presents, CD player works fine, radio doesn’t.

Hello, i did the regulator replacement, and worked like a charm! After a while the car stereo is randomly rebooting with a sort of choke and 20 seconds of apparent death, the other sympthom is display backlight dimming half/weak/zero/full again in a random way. I don't think is correlated with the IC502 fix, it happens in all modes (CD,AUX)...do you have any clue? Thanks in advance

Hi, I have the same radio. Mine works but as the interior of the car get hotter the buttons stop working. For some reason button number 1 is the last to go. They progressively stop working from right to left across the dash. Have you heard of this fault?
@the_equalizor2 жыл бұрын
This could easily be the regulator overheating, so for the cost of doing it, I'd recommend just replacing it anyway.

It’s a Rohm BA00AS LDO variable voltage version, or you can also use the fixed 8v out version too. It has the same pin out and footprint.

Next things to fail will be the electrolytic capacitors around that component - they don't take being heated very well, it's fortunate that none of them popped whilst you were heating them. Should have either shielded them, or else heated from the underside of the board if there was nothing in the way...
@will_doherty Жыл бұрын
Just done mine - I can confirm there're no components/plastics underneath the board in that area, so I used hot air from underneath. Worked nicely... Thanks for your video, saved me some head scratching and time 🙂

Thank you for your comment, that will definitely help other people doing this repair. I did keep an eye on the caps (i looking for signs of the plastic wrapper on them burning and they seemed okay and weren’t bulging by the end so so all good, radio still working.
