Great video. Thank you for actually showing how to adjust the parking brake, which most other videos just gloss over. This is important for those of us who never touched drum brakes and haven't had to touch parking brakes before. Thanks also for really addressing the rust, which is also not present in many videos but is a major factor here in NE Ohio.

Wife came home the other day telling me her "front" brakes were making a horrible noise, turns out it was both the rears with the driver's side actually dragging. I figured I'd look to see if there were any KZfaq videos on it and found yours. I'm pretty good with a wrench and plan to go a few steps further than you did like painting the calipers and hitting the suspension components with rust restorer and paint after a little cleanup but I'd like to thank you for your efforts it's going to make my job go a lot smoother seeing the process in advance. Looks pretty straight forward, the truck's already on jack stands and wheels removed, next step is remove the calipers and see how bad things look, I'm hoping to get away with just rotors and pads and removing the rust nodules before hitting whatever needs it with some paint including the calipers. For lube I like to use some well placed silver never seize, can anyone tell me why this is a bad idea? I've never had an issue with it.

Appreciated and enjoyed the video on Honda Ridgeline rear brake rotor and pads. I can appreciate the particular attention you paid to the calcium and the problems it presents in maintaining a vehicle up north. You are more than welcome to bring your crescent wrench with you when you retire and move down south with the rest of us.Thanks.

I had that pucker. After a firestone shop left my a-arm bolts loose on an alignment, and I ripped the a-arm, shock, cv shaft off the frame, they didn't set the brakes on round three. (Round two was subpar parts replacing high end ones that were wrecked.) Pulled out of the shop, got to the end of the block, and blew through 6 lanes of traffic on a red light in Denver. E brake was left unhooked, somehow they thought it was causing problems bleeding brakes... Thank god I somehow made it through. I almost got arrested that day.

Eric - It is fun to pound on the rotor to get it off but the rotors on the Ridgeline have threaded bolt holes to thread in two metric bolts (forgot the size/have them at home) and as you alternatively tighten them, it'll pop the rotor off. Clever Honda design...Again, not as much fun as a 3 lb sledge but quieter.

Good times with SMA. Interesting to see the little things people to differently, I always fit the caliper bracket to the car, then put the pads in, otherwise I end up dropping them lol. Also first step should be check the brake fluid, if it's been topped off it could overflow when you press the piston back in!

I us the Permatex Ceramic Extreme on all the metal contact points like you and use Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Caliper Lube on the slide pins & bushings. Never had any issues myself with any brake jobs on customer cars or my own. Heard & read all the issues some people have had but they are the few. Probably going to try the Permatex 80653 Silicone Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant next...heard some great reviews on it and it is supposed to be compatible with all rubber boots, seals, bushings...after I use up all the stuff that has worked great for years :D

Eric O even makes a simple brake job look so darn good. Customers all over the country would have less complaints after brake repairs if mechanics did quality work like this video illustrates. Always impressed with the time spend on the small but highly important details of his jobs. I also learn a lot because he takes the time to explain those smaller details and the consequences that may arise if you fail to do them. Ive always over lubricated my sliding pins because I once had those pins seize up on me in the bracket. Eric explained why over lubricating those pins can actually cause MORE problems by pushing the pins back out and hanging up the pads defeating your whole objective. Thank you Eric O.

@South Main Auto THANK YOU! I’m about to do front and rear brakes on my “new to me” 2006 Ridgeline in two weeks! I actually flowcharted your directions/actions while watching this video. I’ve actually done brakes several times on my 1995 Saab 900 but for some reason I’ve been apprehensive about doing the Ridgeline brakes. Seeing your video made me realize that it’s basically the same, just a bigger vehicle. Found your channel by accident. Been using the purple stuff ever since the NAPA guy put it in my bag o'goodies without me knowing. Was $20 then - nice to get it free! I've seen the stuff harden up a bit on my truck, but that thing gets abused big time. Heavy foot no matter what I'm towing behind it. It's brakes get HOT. :D Lesser brake lubes would just break down and fail completely, and ruin the pads when the caliper seized on the pins. Got a couple stories for ya regarding local "techs" and how people view quality work. First, I brought my '93 Volvo 940 to the glass place for a new windshield. Found my carpet sopping wet on the passenger side - had to take the seat, and all the sound deadening "jute" out of there to drip dry. Anyway, I get the car back, and my passenger side wiper is SMOKED - stripped clean. Wouldn't even move, even with the nut tight. I get that it's a nearly 25 year old car, but the guy didn't even tell me! To top it all off, the driver's side wiper arm was mounted too high up on the windshield - looked ridiculous! Very few people these days take the time and effort to do a good job. Sad. Story #2: neighbor had a rear hub bearing installed at another shop since I was busy with my addition project. That was a little over 2 weeks back. He stops by and says his e-brake isn't working anymore. So I yank the rear brakes and rotors after verifying the cable was still good and moving everything as it should. Turns out they were just out of adjustment, probably from my 86 year old neighbor leaving it on a couple times. It happens. But, on the side that had the shiny new hub bearing, the adjuster star was so friggin tight I had to remove it and throw it in the vice, and hog on it with big Channel Locks before it broke free - I can only assume it was the last guy that worked on it, spinning the star the wrong way ... with a hammer and screwdriver ... and gave up when they got it stuck, and couldn't recall which way it was supposed to turn. Unreal! Took me all of 45 minutes to do both sides, and that's using a jack and jack stands! They were right there - they could've at least got ONE parking brake working - better than NONE! Anyway, I got her working correctly. Now if he leaves the brake on, it'll drag the rear tires - that will get his attention. :)
