Sadly, I recently learned this in regards to a former close friend. I thought we were great pals and meant to be bffs because she and I loved many of the same books. But what Chloe says in this film is so, so true. Just because my ex friend liked the same bizarre crap I did, didn't mean we had any real beliefs in common, or that she respected me. Or that her manners (lack thereof) aren't so off putting I want to vomit when I picture her sitting across from me eating. Honestly, I want to hate her for being a bitch and literally for all the property damage she caused when I invited her to my home... But I'm mad at myself for not seeing her for what she really was either. Yeah, she was manipulative as hell, so that much isn't my fault. But she said to my face that people can like the same book for different reasons and I still didn't get it through my head, thinking we were gonna be great pals. Well. Lesson learned.

So opposites do attract?
@qwertyCandy
@qwertyCandy 4 жыл бұрын
@@DrExploadsAlot In my experience, opposites only attract when the other one has qualities you wish you had. Like when you're shy and boring and they are sociable and funny. You might wish you were as cool as them, while they might admire that you're responsible, smart etc. _Only then_ it may work, imho, but honestly? The chances are slim and it's more likely that you'll get on each other's nerves because of being fundamentally different. So no, I can't really recommend it - imho you still get a better chance marrying someone similar, at least then you get to understand that particular brand of dysfunctional weirdness (and we all have stuff like that).

Usually, but not always. I had a couple of friends at uni who hung out together a lot, were constantly in physical contact, required ten extra minutes to make a decision because they constantly deferred to each other, and by all accounts were in the sort of relationship usually described as boyfriend/girlfriend, but, because she didn't like the term "girlfriend" (associating it with escorts and other professionals), they didn't use those words...

She says she's not looking for anything serious, but when they have the fight after Tom clearly expresses that he wants to be a couple, she just ends up showing up at his doorstep looking all sullen and they make up. Tom had idealism issues and Summer had commitment issues. They were flawed people (and thus, normal) who had strong feelings for each other but were ultimately not compatible. People try way too damn hard to place blame on one character or the other.

Exactly. Tom was a creep who didn't even really care about Summer (wich is why we know basically nothing about her) but she could be very mean and selfish too (like when she belittled him because he kept his job, or when she invited him to a party without telling him she was engaged) They were both awfull together

This. Plus you can't project onto someone that doesn't want to be projected onto. It might work for a short time before the other one realizes what's going on and start to feel lonely and resentful. But further than that and there's usually some enabling/counter projection going on. It took her a couple of weeks to go from "I'm never having a boyfriend" to "I'm happily engaged", which certainly implies that that yearning for a real relationship was never buried too far down in her subconscious mind causing some internal conflict within her and some mixed messages being sent. Which explains why of all people, she chose to date a romantic sob of a person that on the surface wanted the total opposite of her. They were basically each others useful idiots.

I remember seeing this in theaters with a whole bunch of friends and being the only one who didn't like it. This movie is pretty realistic but that's what made me so uncomfortable when I first saw it. She was honest and clear and he took things too far. He put her on an unrealistic pedestal and she didn't want it. I think a big part of why we don't know much about her is because he doesn't and the movie is from his perspective. The thing that bothered me the most is that I'm not sure he learned his lesson in the end.
