I mean, the first time I watched it I had nightmares. I was 6 years old and these witches killed a little girl in the first 10 minutes of the movie and spent the rest trying to kill another. You can understand my worry.

I still can't watch this without getting scared.. it used to air really late at night in my country and I would make an excuse not to watch it. I was only forced to watch it when our sitter really wanted to see it and I was not able to sleep after that. It's still giving me the creeps, and I just realized how good their costumes are and how realistic everything is that made me really scared back then. In my mind this is all very possible and that there really are witches with us right now.

Prologue that introduces our villains, introduction of our main characters, inciting incident, main characters incur the wrath of the villains, chase ensues, villains incapacitate anyone who tries to help the villains, false victory (or 2), final confrontation, happy ending, sequel bait that may or may not mean anything. It IS a horror movie!

Leonardo DiCaprio was supposed to play the boy lead, but turned it down for a more challenging role in the less known What's Eating Gilbert Grape. And a good thing he did. He absolutely shines in that movie. It earned him an Oscar nomination, and notice by Martin Scorsese who cast him multiple times after that, among others.

In the Disney novelization of the first movie with a sequel they released a few years ago, Max apologizes to the bullies for leaving them behind. It even goes into how scared and hurt they were being left there. It was actually pretty decent

I love that Kathy Najimy played a witch in this movie, and also played a nun in Sister Act. And Dame Maggie Smith also played a nun in two 90's movies and then played a witch in the Harry Potter series.

Funny you mention the nun part because in the episode of King of the Hill where Peggy (also voiced by Kathy Najimy) impersonates a nun, once Hank finds out, he makes a deep reference (and 4th Wall-ish observation) that at least when Whoopi Goldberg impersonated a nun, it was to run from the mafia

Of course the Nightmare before Christmas Is a Halloween movie!!! If you want to see a christmas movie, you have to find out the BBC adaptation of Terry Pratchett's The Hogfather. It is divided in two films, one for the 24th and one for the 25th. The book is better, but it's still a lovely Hogswatch...ehmmm... christmas watch 😊

Not only did I grow up with this, I also grew up with Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble (the Mary Kate and Ashley movie) and Ernest Scared Stupid too. The Obsession with Max's virginity aside, this really does hold up much better, lol And you guys are SPOT ON with the Three Stooges similarities

I remember when I was little, I would my older sister that I wanted to watch this movie by calling it “The Three Bad Witches.” We also had a single episode of Charmed that I would call “The Three Good Witches.” I don’t remember if I just didn’t know what they were called or if that’s what I actually thought that they were called. I would ask her to put on both a lot around Halloween.

Haven't thought about Earnest Scared Stupid for a while. I think I was 11 years old when I first saw it. I just remember the scene where he's given the letters MI_K and can't figure out what it is. Then he later confronts the monster all confident that he knows his weakness and shows him a can of "Miak," followed by Earnest saying "thought I couldn't find any this time of year didn't ya?" 11 year old me absolutely lost it.

Am I the only one who never realized that the witches had an actual hex in their version of "I Put A Spell On You"? I watched this movie over a dozen times, and didn't notice until they repeated the spell in Hocus Pocus 2. "Ah say ento pi alpha mabi upendi. In comma coriyama."

Halloween Town never went anywhere. It's still on the list of most moron's overplayed Halloween Specials (that said, I'm amazed Hot Topic or Spirit Halloween have not cashed in on that one yet. Guess they're satisfied enough marketing Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus)
