The Dornish abandoned their holds when Aegon first invaded and returned once the dragons had left, killing anyone that he had left behind to garrison the principality. Aegon's hand and alleged bastard-halfbrother Orys Baratheon had been taken captive during the first invasion and upon being released for a hefty ransom had his sword-hand chopped off. In the following years Aegon and his sisters burnt down one hold after the other (which didn't stop the Dornish from laying waste to large parts of the Reach and the Stormlands) until every settlement in Dorne, save for Sunspear had been leveled. At the siege of Hellholt Aegon's favorite sister-wife Rhaenys flew attacks on her dragon Meraxes, when a scorpio-bolt struck the dragon's eye. It fell out of the sky and slowly died on the ground (tearing down parts of the castle in the process).

I think the show in a stupid way tried and failed to say that the threat was Dany not The Night King. So Jon did save Westeros and complete the prophecy. But poor writing just mucked it up.

It sounds like he just pronounced it more nasally - Vel-AIR-yon rather than Vel-ARR-yon. The show probably chose the second pronunciation to avoid confusion with Valyrians.
