J Lee I can only deadlift 365 and I did 245×5 my first time ever doing the hook grip today. It was uncomfortable but not terrible or anything. I think you're doing something wrong, man. It takes time to build up but it shouldn't hurt that severely. Make sure you're running your thumb PARALLEL to the bar and not UP the bar if that makes sense. You want the bar to be pressing your thumb between itself and your fingers, not feeling like it's going to be ripped off because your thumb is being yanked from being pointed up.

The other issue I have with over/under hand grip is that I find that my right elbow become sore. One disadvantage I have is that I am missing a part of my right hand little finger so the double overhand grip (normal) is significantly weakened since it happened (over a year ago). Will start practicing the hook grip.

I have a question. When we use the hook grip and the mixed grip, we are using friction to keep the bar in our hands, rather than actual grip strength. So why not just use straps? since they employ friction also. What's the difference?

Search KZfaq for "painless hook grip" and watch Clint Darden's video. If you do it right, it doesn't really hurt. Basically, you want to have it over the fat part of your thumb, otherwise it will rip off the new calluses you'll develop from hook grip (and if you don't have those calluses yet, it just feels like your thumb is being ripped off).

Your shoulder should not be rolled in and out like that if you are doing alternate properly. The forearm has the ability to rotate without rotating the entire arm. It is the whole point of having a radius and ulna instead of a single bone. Even still, the hook grip is also legit.

Is there any argument against straps for a person who doesn't compete (besides the obvious because it's for pussies reason)? I wonder because the hook grip or alternate grip are pretty much the same as straps. You don't build your grip strength you just make it easier. So why not use straps and not risk damaging your thumbs. Or just train grip so that you can pull it double overhand.
@DBowTX
@DBowTX 8 жыл бұрын
If they didn't train your grip, people wouldn't miss lifts because of grip giving out. I've pulled 630 when I was focusing on strength and can tell you, your forearms and fingers know when you pull heavy even with mixed.
@philhorrocks1038
@philhorrocks1038 7 жыл бұрын
You'll end up working forearms with tons of other exercises (Lat pull down, rows, shrugs, etc.) so using straps on deadlift isn't a huge deal. Deadlifts are mostly meant to strengthen your whole body and I'll take back and leg development over forearm development.
