I am glad I found this video. I had some difficulty with my last overhead press session and was wondering why I could not do 5 reps. It's only after watching this and evaluating my grip that I found out: I was using a wider grip! Thanks Rip!

The 90s bodybuilding bro-science approach was “wider grip gets you wider shoulders” but it turns out that makes zero sense. A wide grip reduces range of motion, reduces power output, and potentially wrecks your wrists and elbows when you start trying to move maximal weight. Gravity’s pulling straight down, so it only makes sense to press straight up in opposition to that 🤔

I lift. I noticed that my left shoulder was feeling funky. I could sense that it would lead to a worse injury. I intuitively narrowed my press grip width to shoulder width and the problem ceased. I suspected the wide grip was creating a shearing force in shoulder. Either way narrowing my grip to shoulder width fixed it.

Yes. I think this video is made for people looking to improve in lifting competitions. If your goal is to build bigger delts, a bit wider grip would help focus the tension there. Too wide a grip reduces range of motion, so keep that in mind too

There’s something you might encounter while using the suggested grip: your biceps might hurt specially if you are not carefully in the eccentric phase. I had biceps pain for weeks and even months because of it, this might be an uncommon issue but keep in mind this can happen, you might feel your biceps is “too tight” at the start position when you put weight in the bar and when you do bench press (if you do it after your OHP) it might hurt way more.

Great job Rip, as always...brief and to the point. Same shoulder wide, or just outside shoulder, grip is ideal for pulling based exercises also...like chin up, pull up, rows...much easier on shoulders. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with wide grip? Why they are willing to sacrify shoulder health and total poundage just to shorten the ROM by a little bit? Does it look more masculine? More cool? What? If so, then why do they perform deadlift with just shoulder wide grip.

@@TrapBarWith41.5cmSleeves yes I agree. We should use different grip width time to time. It helps with more complete development. I have started doing so myself and it feels great. But still, when I go for max weight or max rep, shoulder wide grip feels most comfortable.

@MartinSwain
@MartinSwain 3 жыл бұрын
Everyone has technical reasons why the seated press is 'bad'. Personally I just wonder, how you gonna get a 150 lb bar racked into position while you're sitting down? How you gonna set it down on the floor? And that's not a 'heavy' press, just a moderate weight. Not to mention, when you're sitting, the end of your spine is on a non-compressible position; on a chair seat. Do you really want to load up those joints that way? If you're standing you don't have that problem, your knees can just bend... I don't see any reason to do a seated press. Looks like a back injury waiting to happen, to me.

+TheGeneralCase Narrow grip will give u more strenght and less chance to injure ur shoulder, that doesnt mean to get so narrow its unconfortable, it just mean to get the grip right, about as wide as ur shoulders or little bit wider, but not much wider and not as wide as u grab barbel when u bench press.
@SanjiSasuke
@SanjiSasuke 8 жыл бұрын
+TheGeneralCase Make sure your elbows are nice a vertical and are up high. Rip does more thorough instruction on the press in a few other videos, including another short one on making sure the bar is directly above the wrist.
@CursedWheelieBin
@CursedWheelieBin Жыл бұрын
Vertical forearms at the bottom of the movement. Elbows resting slightly in front of the shoulders, NOT behind. Alan Thrall has some useful cues on his channel. Just stick with it and apply the starting strength weekly increments 🤷🏻‍♂️ This proper way of pressing is probably more challenging because your range of motion is now greater as opposed to this wide grip stuff

What if I use the same grip width that I use to catch a clean? Should I still use the narrow grip?
@KriegWaters
@KriegWaters 7 жыл бұрын
You should not use the same grip width as on a clean. The grip on a clean is designed to facilitate the rack position at the top and thus must be wider, hence the wider clean grip than deadlift grip. If you are going to jerk the bar afterward, the primary force comes from the legs, so the arm position need not be optimal for pressing. For the press, a narrow grip allows the upper body to perform the work more efficiently.

bullshit. I've tried both loads and looooads of times. I get a bigger lift with a wider grip. The bar travels less, and I feel more secure at the top. With a narrow grip I'm more prone to wobbling. Also, think of the angle of the elbows, with a wider grip, it's a less acute angle, so it's easier to start the push.
@geordier7741
@geordier7741 2 жыл бұрын
Way too narrow, just look at his elbows beginning to carry out sideways. That will impinge the shoulder joint in addition to making it difficult to keep the scapulae in correct position which will also reduce power output because it will disrupt the kinetic chain. An inch wider either side is much more biomechanically natural without creating a large moment arm and I beg anyone to not go this narrow because your shoulders rarely heal to 100% after injury
