One thing I'd like to add is that the procedure you are running is for when the "Cleaning/Descaling" light is flashing. If it is lit solid, then this indicates that the machine should be descaled. Edit: I just saw that you explained the blinking vs solid light in another video you posted on descaling but for anyone first viewing this video, they may not realize that.

I appreciate you very much for making this video. I, too, had watched a video where water was filtered through the basket during the cleaning process. I was concerned that I didn’t see any water coming out. Very happy to know this model is slightly different and the water is found in the drip tray instead. Also, only two beeps when completed and not three as shown on other video. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this video! I was freaking out as others that machine would explode with pressure going to max and no water coming out from spouts, as it was described in the manual and in other videos.... but makes sense, how can it get out if there’s rubber seal. Thank you!

Thank god I saw this specific video. Unlike the other ones on KZfaq - this version of this espresso machine empties below, not from the filter for some reason. The idiotic thing about this is that the owners manual DOESNT tell you the water will be coming from below, but rather through the filter into a large bowl. So dumb. So frustrating.

yeah there shouldnt be anywater coming out or if there is any it should be intermittent drips that after the entire cycle should amount to like a half teaspoon if even that much... this models purging system used negative pressure following extraction to pull water backwards out the group head to backflush it into the tray. thats also why there is a silicone gasket. to ensure that the water that comes off the pump dissolves the cleaner, and then gets flushed down into the tray. you need to use the single cup SINGLE WALL portafilter to do the cleaning process not the dual wall. this is going by the official breville youtube channel on cleaning the barista express. bes870.

I'm glad I found this video. I was freaking out that no water was coming out of the portafilter spouts. The directions in my manual says that this should be happening. Maybe I have an old manual? But the way you explained it makes sense especially the back flush.

Thank you very much, have looked this video up at least twice now, 7 y/o machine on it's last legs but this is keeping it going. Top tip for others potentially, I lost the rubber insert so instead I used masking tape to close the inside of the group (tape on top from the inside right), worked fine!

In the older models, the water would come out of the portafilter but the newer versions the water drains from within the machine into the bottom tray.

When I make my coffee with my 870, I only use distilled water- and cleaning is much less often than every few weeks as suggested- since there really is no scale in the water to build up in the machine- I just clean it more like every few months Just for the sake of a good clean coffee pour. Hope this helps.

To start a cleaning process: 1) Replace to single shot 2) Install rubber blocker 3) Drop on Cleansing pill 4) Add water to full 5) Drain pan to empty 6) Operate the machine while it’s OFF. Press and hold “2”shots and “1” shot buttons , and while holding these, press and HOLD additionally the “ON” button. a. If the process started correctly, the “CLEAN ME” light will be flashing. 7) Once done, rerun the cleaning (step 6) WITHOUT the cleaning pill just to be sure that chemicals are washed out from the machine. 8) Done.

This is what I haven been looking for. I have had the same model machine and used a few times then stopped using it for long time because of cleaning. I’m very clean and neat. I was afraid of cleaning the machine even before the cleaning light on. I knew sometimes I have to clean the machine. Almost I was going to sell my machine. The reason yours does have water coming out is becuase at some point Breville changed the design of the rubber cap where the pill sits on. The original rubber cap that came with the early years BES870XL had a small pin size hole in the middle where water could escape down the portafilter. Newer years BES870XL came with the rubber cap without that hole. I’ve owned multiple BES870XL and noticed this difference.

Someone may have mentioned it, there's two versions of barista express, older version just have clean me, newer version has clean/descale. The older version drips out from the portafilter, newer version like yours will come out to the drip tray

what edition manual do you have because its not supposed to come out (they say intermittent drips) which when you think about it coincides with the cycling of the pump. so pressure increases and decreases move the rubber disk which allows minute amounts of liquid to flow past.
