I ended up making my own comparator bushing from 3/8"i.d.-1/2o.d. x 3/4" steel bushing. I bored it over to .385 then cut a 45 degree chamfer just deep enough to widen the circumference of the mouth so the measuring point read what my go headspace gauge actually is (1.630"). So now I know an actual number rather than just a reference and adjust accordingly. Works so good I made another out of brass.

Just bought this Hornady kit consisting of Straight o.a.l. Gauge, head comparator kit, 223 modified case and the 308 modified case. English/American is not my mother tongue and your video cleared one of the issues I had. Thanks very much for that and yes you have a fan in Belgium :-) By the way best wishes for a sound and safe 2019. Best regards Eric

I knew it was .243 before you said it ! Those are my EXACT measure measurements for my .243 Lapua brass unfired and once fired. This measurement surprised me as SAMMI min headspace is 1.630 and I was worried if I was doing something wrong. Hornady reloaded recommends measuring the neck close to the shoulder and just below the shoulder and adding the two together and dividing by two ; he then chooses the closest bushing to that number. I only own the D bushing. Wondered if it gave a different reading.

New reloader waiting on kit delivery. Other items ordered include comparator and maybe case length guage to keep things safe as per Sami. Doesn’t a full length sizing die accomplish this except for case neck length eventually. Good information

Often wondered if the most important measurement is bullet olive minus shoulder measurement. Bolt pushes cartrage shoulder to chamber shoulder and establishes jump.

Vaughn could you please help me out? I’m brand brand new to reloading, I have brand new cases that measure 1.625 for my son’s .243 savage and some once fired that measure 1.630. I have the hornady 2 die set (full length sizing and seater dies). How do I get the necks back down to the 1.625? Does it have to be a Hornady neck sizing die only? I’m lost man

Great video . I always neck size my 270 brass after first shot which is custom fit to my chamber . Brass height is as SAAMI spec . But when ever i try with case length headspace guage it does not fit properly . Now my question is does my rifle has headspace issue ? Do i need to continue neck sizing or i should it to gun smith ?

The shoulder moves forward on firing. You just need to bump it back with a body die.
@crosstimbers2
@crosstimbers2 3 жыл бұрын
The bushings for this gauge have the edges of the bores broken. This causes the gauge to read smaller than the real size of the cases. So the caliper reading cannot be used to get a SAAMI dimension unless you zero the Hornady gAuge on a gunsmith headspace gauge. However the gauge is still good for comparing once fired cases with FL sized cases. I shoot mostly at the rifle range so I set my dies to FL size a case to give a light drag when I close the bolt. For hunting I would push the shoulder back .002 on a once fired case.

The Neck is only trimmed one time, usually trimmed to .13 or .14. The case Over All Length must be trimmed after each firing because it will stretch during each shot.

Great channel! So the bullet comparator has bushings that are strikingly similar (but shorter) than the headspace comparator. It would seem to me that there should be a similar way to do the headspace measurement with the bullet comparator. Just my Scottish heritage speaking ... Is that possible?
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 6 жыл бұрын
No, not possible simply due to the internal diameter of the bushings. The shorter bushings have a much smaller hole while the other measures the shoulder of the case.

I use the Lee Precision Collet Neck die for most of my brass processing in conjuction with a Redding Body Die. The Body Die will resize the body and bump the shoulder back to your headspace preference and leaves the neck untouched.

Hello guys. Im brand new to reloading, in fact, I just got a Hornady LNL AP press 4 days ago at the time of this writing and im trying to learn what I can so I can be safe to myself and others. My question is neck sizing and bump sizing. Is neck sizing refering to the diamater of the case mouth where the bullet seats? and bump sizing refering to the neck length? or the shoulder to head length?
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 6 жыл бұрын
Botwire the neck is just the section of the case that holds the bullet. When you neck size, all you are sizing is the neck. When it comes to shoulders, you are bumping only the shoulder down a little, towards the head or (base) of the case. It’s important to know the case terms. Head, body, shoulder and neck. Then you have the primer pocket and flash hole. It’s a ton to learn and takes time but you’ll get it.!

Vaughn Precision Thanks for the explanation. currently im not going to reload rifle rounds yet. My first caliber starting out is going to be .380 Auto. I have an AR15 that can shoot 5.56 and .223 rounds which I plan to reload in addition to the .380 Auto. My shell plate can hold both .380 as well as .223 cases. Because I have an interest in reloading 223 cal. I figure I would research the information and learn the terminology as well.
