My very glossy Hornby Railways R.051 GWR Pannier Tank Locomotive, variations can be found with different catalogue numbers between early 70s and early 80s this version is glossy and non-smoking, but the insert in the box is from a smoking model. It's running with a pair of R.123 great western horse boxes from early 70s along with a Clerestory Coach R.332 and Brake R.333 from the early 1960s.
All dates approximate.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old my dad took me to the local model railway shop, and said that I could choose any train set I wanted. I was looking at the sets on display in the window, whilst my dad went inside to talk to the shop keeper. I can remember looking at the sets, and seeing the GWR pick up goods set,. When my dad came out of the shop to ask if I had picked a set I would like, I pointed to the set, and he asked if I was sure, I said yes, because it had 6 wagons, were as the passenger set only had 2 coaches. So this brings back happy memories.

Very impressed that the pannier tank didn’t stop on any of the points. Mine always used to. Eventually I swapped the chassis with an older diesel shunter which was a much better runner.

I was very lucky to pick up this lovely little loco a couple of years back at Model Rail Scotland for a bargain price excellent condition complete with syncrosmoke, original box (little bit tatty) and runs wonderfully. Like most folk am not always that lucky! Good to see yours running so well Oscar!

Remember when the Pannier came out, the great and good in the Model Railway Constructor absolutely slated it. Evening Star came out at the same time. I just thought they were superb. Another great video, thank you.

I got a R051 in a set for Christmas 1974. The loco did have Synchrosmoke. The smoke units in all locos were dropped in 1975. For 1975 the pannier tank was renumbered with catalogue number R041 and repackaged in a polystyrene tray with a slide on outer window box and a line drawing insert. If it don't smoke its a R041.

Hi Oscar, I’m a bit later this week as I was discharged from hospital on Sunday after a hip operation and as a credit to you and your channel the first thing I did was sat down and watched Sunday’s video with a restorative cup of tea. Great ‘tank’ video, I have two Panniers and they must be later editions as, from memory, they have flanged centre wheels. Tanks run on small goods/passenger services back in the day and were part of the landscape. We need them to maintain a reality along with the big hitters. Squirming here slightly and not from post op. A decent collection has been donated to the club and up for auction today. I have left a couple of bids but would have loved to have been there. Thanks, Gordon

Hi Oscar, marvellous, the GWR pannier tank was my first ever out of the box brand new loco when I was a kid. I mostly had second hand locos because the budget was quite tight. It was so exciting getting that loco and it had that exact distinct resonating sound that you picked up in the opening shots. It's still in the loft of my brother's farm in Tasmania. Now, remindered of it, I will have to get it brought over to France by the next visiting family member... if they can find it! It had matching coaches, GWR R931 and R932 as well. Thanks again, Guy

This was my second train from my childhood, the GWR pannier has always had a special spot in my toy train’s memories. I have three now, they all have a unique sound to them. As you showed, take the body off and they can be very quiet but pop the body on then you can hear it. Not sure if it’s the type of plastic or the way the body is designed but the motor purs away. GWR passenger with two coaches; then goods and freight. Thankyou got bring back some fond memories that are shared with so many. Wishing you all the best Oscar, Marc from Leighton Buzzard

Superb running session this morning Oscar. I have ridden behind a Pannier on the South Devon Rly and it had quite a bark to it so the growl of your model seems quite appropriate. The price label was "The Model Shop, Newcastle" but I couldn't make out the phone number. Perhaps there is a history somewhere. Thank you as always, I really liked today's running session. David.

I have one of the later versions with synchro smoke - interesting to see the changes they made inside. It's one of the few locos I ever bought new. It too has the distinctive 'growl'. The 0-6-0 shunter has its own tone too, especially when on PWM power. I think my PT must have got dropped at some point, as I then found that the flat top of the panniers with the brass detail is a separate moulding from the rest of the body and now regularly comes apart. It makes recharging the smoke easier! Thanks for sharing your layout with us all. Mike

Good morning Mike, thank you again for looking in, nice to hear you have one of these in your collection. Interesting bit of moulding the top part of this one looks like it will come away and doesn't quite meet along one part of the handrail at the front, but even with a very firm pull, the top part won't come away I suspect it's been partially bonded in position. All the best. Osacr

Hi Oscar, bit late on parade this week I'm afraid. Loved seeing the Pannier tank, and what a superb train for it to pull. The Tri-ang Hornby/Hornby Pannier must be the loco I have the most examples of, boxed in various styles, some slightly re-liveried, in sets, and not forgetting the London transport version. The only loco I have more examples of is the Princess, but that's another story. That Hornby Dublo R1 looks good with the Tri-ang coaches, that converter coach is earning it's keep. Brings to mind a Hornby Dublo super detail Western Region coach I picked up at one of the fund coaches on the Severn Valley Railway in excellent condition converted with Tri-ang couplings. Looks good as the odd one out in a rake of Tri-ang Maroon Mk1 coaches. Thanks as always for a great video.

Hi Oscar. I noticed when you ran it first it sounded quite noisy as is usual for these 060s. But then later on in the video it was quieter. Bit odd. I put bubble wrap or other material inside the body to deaden that echo from the motor. Thanks for sharing

I remember getting one of these sometime in the 70s Oscar. I think I just about ran the wheels off it. I Handled it that much the lettering was barely legible. I do recall taking the body off quite a lot and just marveling at the motor, gears, rods and wheels just moving as I ran it around. It fascinated me. Seeing yours just running around less its body, reminded me of that. 😊 Now Im wondering what became of it.

Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Just watched your excellent latest video. Great to see the GWR pannier tank locomotive pulling it's horse box vans and coaches. It's interesting how Hornby changed the colour scheme of coaches to suit the different types of railway companies. I think it makes for an interesting collection of different colours. The good thing about having your own railway is that you can run anything you wish. I've seen some wonderful layouts over the years that have been modelled on a certain time in railway history and they look amazing. But I prefer your style of railway Oscar, it's what I what brought up on, running my layout by myself or with my best friend, my dear old dad, well Oscar, it's time for my cup of tea and my toasted tea cake. Keep safe and ill see you next Sunday Oscar. 👍🚂🚃

I love this Pannier Tank and have r 300 out on my layout atm, a lovely smooth mover over the point work & sounding very sweet since being serviced - I’m a big fan of 0-6-0 locos in General, being an ideal variation on the 0-4-0 when operating a compact layout - I’ve rescued & renovated a dozen or so different clerestory coaches, the most recent project being a Brake end which has been given over to the engineers dept. Great running today and especially enjoyed the hands free angles when removing items from boxes. Many thanks..

Hi Oscar, Great to see the Pannier Tank loco.. I thought this was a nice video, with surprisingly smooth running locos.. As I have mentioned before, I have often found the various Tri- ang 0-6-0 chassis' (that I have) to often "waddle" a bit, as if a wheel is "out of round", but the locos ran quite smoothly tonight, pulling the "race day special" horse boxes beautifully.. It was a change to see the top loop run in the other direction? This is great for turning the trains around to head in the opposite direction.. I enjoyed the little 'running session at the start of the video.. Thank you for another trip down memory lane? Cheers Rob

I’ve still got my R51S. It was one of the very new locomotives I had as a kid. It was a Christmas present. It’s still in very good condition including the box. I really looked after it. The smoke coil has burnt out but I’ve just recently found another one by chance. I’ve got to fit today after I’ve serviced the motor. The smoke unit has a worm driven piston to create the smoke chuff effect. If you like, I could scan the instruction sheet and send you a pdf file?

As always, another thoroughly enjoyable visit to your layout. It seems as though there is no shortage of subject matter for you to present to the viewers and I always look forward to what you’ll run next. I was wondering if you could do a segment on how you’ve wired the layout, especially the elevated return section. I’ve been avoiding adding a return loop on my layout even though I’d like to have the ability to turn trains. I was curious how you change the polarity on the elevated section. Also how many track feeders do you have to ensure good electrical continuity across the whole layout? And no need to worry about keeping the videos going on too long… I could watch your trains all day!
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 2 ай бұрын
Hi, great to enjoy here you enjoyed the video. I had avoided a return loop in the past thinking they are incredibly complex however it seemed quite straightforward in the end. I did quite a bit of reading on the various ways of making it work and in the end chose the route of using two double siding rails (Rail brakes on inside rail and outside rail) and changing polarity in that section with a really operating with the points. Thanks again for looking in take care. Oscar

I could never understand why they went for a plastic drive wheel while retaining the brass worm at this point in the company's history (apart from cutting costs). I have found out to my detriment in these later years that the plastic (obviously) wears out quicker when engaged with a metal component. I have a Princess, from this time, which goes in reverse but has stopped moving forward due to wear of the plastic drive wheel. Luckily I have managed to get an earlier chassis with brass drive wheel which I am going swap out. I love the pannier. It really does stand out on the layout. BTW have you got a piece of isolating track on your elevated loop? I ask because you had two trains in it at one time and only one of them moved when power was applied.... or am I missing something? Great video as always. Brian
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 2 ай бұрын
Good morning Brian, I'm sure it must've been a cost-cutting exercise the switch to the plastic gear. I've swapped a couple of the drive gears over in the past it's not such a tricky job, once swapped out of the models with a little care they will probably outlast us all. The loop has a pair of isolating rails and the feed has its par switched depending on which way the points are set so one train can be at the station whilst the other one moves off, also there is an isolating override which means I I'm able to hold a third train between the bridges and have two trains stationary and move off. All the. best. Oscar
