Hi John great to hear you have both those models as originals from you, when I first got this model it suffered some quite intermittent running in the end. I took a little off the top edge of the draw bar which enable to tender to sit on the rails and not be so susceptible to slight undulation in the track.. it made a massive difference. Good morning Oscar, the Britannia is running very nicely, and it's a really good idea to have a buffer wagon with different couplings at each end, it increases your options on what to run. Enjoyed this morning session Oscar always look forward to my Sunday morning. Take care Eddy xx

I have 2 SS 9Fs of the same vintage. There was really nothing quite like these locos available at the time. Enjoyed the video very much.

Hi Oscar, lovely running footage at the beginning. I think that would be one of the last of the original Fleischman derived Ringfield motor powered models before the cheaper plastic version took over. The interesting story of how that first Triang Hornby Ringfield motor came about, and why it was changed to the plastic version, is told in one of Pat Hammond's Triang/Hornby books. I used to drool over those silver seal locos as a child in that very catalogue! Regards, Antony

Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. I hope you are keeping well, I've just watched your latest video and it was very interesting and informative as always. Every time I watch your wonderful videos I am always transported ( by train. Lol 🙂) back to my young days. It's quite amazing how most of your rolling stock is in great condition, maybe they had a different construction system to what they have today. But anyway, as i say nearly every week the pleasure of seeing your railway is amazing. I am always on the lookout for a station like your large one, I guess it must be one of the early ones, maybe Triang? I think it looks quite magnificent and I like the colour of it. Is it cream or maybe a very light yellow.? Either way it is a very magnificent structure indeed. Thank you for all the pleasure and happy memories your railway gives me every Sunday. Good morning Martin thank you again for looking and it's great to hear you enjoy seeing these videos. It's been a busy week and I've had a bit of a cold which has made everything seem to take a little bit longer, but pretty much over it now. The large station in the cream colour is a Hornby Dublo item Terminus/Through Station 5083 I think it was brought to market in the late 1959 and as Hornby Dublo was absorbed by Tri-ang and became Tri-ang Hornby it was absorbed into their range for a time and they even made one in those dark maroon colours they used for there station buildings in the late 60s for a couple of years. It's a lovely looking item, but takes up a large amount of space on railway, and can be set up as a Terminus or a Through station. All the best. Oscar

Hi Oscar, I know I keep saying this but good intro footage, very realistic. Nice Britannia. I picked up a Silver Seal R552 OLIVER CROMWELL a couple of weeks ago, 6 traction tyres and flanged centre driving wheel, very smooth. Best wishes, Gordon

Nice model . I have a slightly earlier one , Oliver Cromwell which has the tender and loco permanently coupled . After 49 years it still runs well . I remember getting that catalogue through the post , my first mail order from Hattons beck in 1976 . Thought it was a good catalogue with some good illustrations on layouts , but it could only have been better than the 75 catalogue where vast numbers of items had been discontinued ! Another. first class video Oscar ,very enjoyable .Must say it is quite a substantial motor in the tender but like mine noisy , but can pull 8 coaches no problem on the flat .Keep up the enjoyable videos Oscar 😊

Very timely video.I have just got hold of R063 myself. I really like these early Silver Seal models. I also have R859 Black 5 and R863 class 47. Both smooth quiet runners. Hope to get hold of the two 9F's as well someday. After a full clean and service she still had a bit of hesitation and needed a gentle nudge to start on occasions. I have since hard wired the tender to the chassis and it now runs faultlessly.The glossy finish looks great as well. Thanks as always for sharing.

Morning Oscar, another enjoyable start to Sunday. It seems the Hornby tender drive loco to tender pick ups were frequently troublesome, the extra wire being a common modification. You mentioned wondering why Hornby never made a pug in connector wire for theses locos. The first Tri-ang Hornby Evening star, then the early Hornby Black 5, Black 9F and Oliver Cromwell had a fixed wire between loco & tender, effectively meaning they were permanently connected but not coupled. The instruction sheets advised carefull handling as a precaution. The only Early model wired this way I don't have is the Oliver Cromwell, the Black 9F wire needing a repair! Nice assortment of stock today, handy having the dual couplings on the fish van and Utility van. All the best from Me and Sue.

Good video this morning Oscar, I have one of these silver seal Brittania locomotives but it is 70013 Oliver Cromwell, I have recently just managed to get mine running again, my one is one of the versions hornby did with 6 traction tyres on it and they had all gone bad with how old those tyres were so recently I managed to get some more tyres and fitted them to my model, I’m very happy to have it running again, keep up the great work Oscar.

Yes in 1976 £14 for a loco was expensive ,if you think even coppers were on only £35 a week ,I started as a postal cadet in 84 on £75 a week at 16 that was considered as good for my age better when it went up to £100 after I passed probation 😊😊 But disappointed with my purchase I told you about but no worries All the best Oscar Mark 😊😊

Sorry Oscar ,, 1 more question ? You showed an above shot of the tender motor and you can see the armature and drive cog moving in and out and there seems to be a heck of a lot of excessive movement there. I have have pulled a few of these apart and some of them have what i think are tiny plastic spacers and are quit thin but I think they could also be used to keep the armature and drive cog from moving in and out. If you put them on the drive cog side you may have to use a puller to get the small brass cog off main drive shaft then put the washers in between the motor and the ouer casing of the motor then put the drive cog back on ,, or easier still is to put them in between the brush cover plate and put the tiny washers in between the armature shaft and the the outer brush housing to stop it from moving in and out and also might reduce the amount of noise coming from the motor as well. I know all the other connecting cogs do make a lot of noise but if you stop the drive shaft from moving in ad out it will as they stopping the other cogs wont be moving so much. How I come to notice this on one motor I was doing some work on the motor was a goer but it was really quiet. But after a good clean was going better but soo much noisier than it first was so I looked at my towel for any missing bits and I found a heap of small plastic washer or spacers on the towel so i pulled it apart and put all the washers in it and it was strong powerful and backmto being the quiet engine it was to start. Good morning John thanks for the great info the free play on the armature checked against other motors is all but the same. There is an insulating fibre washer S.3747 between the commentator and the cover plate, I've replaced a number of these in the past on these older motors as they are missing or almost through. Hornby service sheet shows the washer and it looks to be quite a substantial thing, in reality they are literally paper thin, the replacements washers available very often have the holes off centre! I wonder if these reproductions may be thinner than the originals I'm sure the originals would've had the whole centred. Next time I have the model apart, I may try a pair of these washers on the commentator side. All the best. Oscar

I enjoyed the session.. Nice to see the Britannia stretch it's legs on a bit of freight, with a nice variation of 4 wheel wagons.. Our Britannia is an earlier version, with a motor in the boiler? It seems to me that the Britannia chassis seems to run easier than the similar Princess chassis? Maybe Tri-ang had tweaked the measurements a little between models? Thank you for some nice memories.. I think those wheels are marked down X735 on the Hornby service sheets, same wheel possibly used on the 9F and the Ivatt, Triang Hornby Spares have something similar in size which they indicate as a front bogie wheel used by Hornby from 1980 onwards as multi fit. www.hornbytriangspareparts.co.uk/item/X737x2f10-HORNBY-TRIANG-BOGIE-WHEEL-TON Peter spares has them but they are marked us out of stock presently. Hi Oscar ,, Quick qusetion on the loco for this R.063. Is the chassis a type that you can put a drive cog on the the middle drive wheel and add an X03 or X04 motor into the loco than add a base plate wiring and the pickups to the actual loco and then hook it all up to really what ever you need to drag behind it as with all them driving wheels in the loco and the tender you could cart a pretty big rake of what ever you want realy.. Good morning John as Peter has indicated in the attached comment it's possible to make a conversion on these and have a motor in the locomotive. I haven't done one myself. The chassis block is carried over from earlier models and the provision for the motor is still in place. I believe the holes for the screws that hold the motor and the bottom plate may need to be tapped as well as adding a drive gear and collection plate. All the best. Oscar

I was wondering how large the flanges are on the wheels of the Tri-ang models. In the United States at least, there are three codes of rail; code 100, code 83, and code 70. Code 100 track has large enough rails that you can run vintage HO gauge models on it, but more recent models have smaller flanges so they can run on the more realistic code 83 or code 70 track.

Hi Guy, thanks again for watching the bogey pits with items used in the CKD kits where the customer could build the coach themselves and instead of rivets there is a nut and shoulder bolt to do the job. If you search that well-known auction site for the following reproductions are available "S1092/S2178 HORNBY TRIANG CKD FIXING SCREW AND NUT MULTI FIT SEE DESC" they are very useful items. I believe that motor in your Britannia was originated from Fleischman, could be wrong though

I think you are right. Hornby copied the Fleischmann design without authorisation and were made to stop making it, hence the change in design of the later ringfield motors.

​@@PaulinesPastimesI heard that the reason they stopped making that motor was that a worker in the factory dropped and broke the moulding tool for the metal chassis casting and it was considered too expensive to make another, hence the inferior, cheaper plastic version.
