@@KonradCurves It's not about the food industry, and it's not "all" about how other people can judge and destroy your art for their own gain. It's an allegory about art, in general, which touches a large range of subjects related to art; don't be reductive. The food "industry" is used as an analogy for the art world, but it's not about the food industry directly (which is evident once you take in mind all the elements that would make sense in the art world, but not in the food "industry", and how the text was written by two scriptwriters, who I doubt had in mind the food industry, and one of which wrote some episodes of succession, a show which sure as hell isn't afraid of using analogies).

@@KonradCurves as someone who’s worked as a cook in upper level restaurants it kinda made sense to me. You go in thinking that you’re doing the best and making people’s days and giving people smiles through food then remember a lot of people are really pretentious and try to change the rules of the restaurant. Upper level dining isn’t fun and that’s why I got out of it despite the pay. But that’s all arts in general not just culinary as you said.

I feel like the 2003 adaptation in particular really leaned into the darker aspects of the manga in a way which Brotherhood shied away from somewhat. I suspect that this is because the series composition for FMA 2003 was handled by Shou Aikawa, who started out writing ultraviolent schlock OVAs-most infamously Genocyber, Angel Cop and Violence Jack-and while he later mellowed out and lost most of that venomous misanthropy, there's still a downbeat, even morbid edge to a lot of his writing which lends itself well to horror.

I love Connor's outrage over the dog anime. The giga brain plot line from that episode of Ghost in the Shell is literally the plot of the money making scheme Peter and his friends use in the American movie, Office Space. Also, I don't think any of them have seen the Street Fighter anime films. The movie for Street Fighter II is one of the old school classic anime films. They're referencing it in the new Street Fighter game in one of Cammy's Super moves.

The most recent scary movie that scared me so much is skinamarink. Everyone hates this movie because it's experimental analog horror that has nothing going on on screen for most of the time but just as the director said during their first screening that the movie will probably not be for everyone but after watching, try and sleep alone in the dark and you'll probably have trouble sleeping. They've literally captured that feeling of being a kid in your room in the dark at night trying to sleep and you see something weird and you let your imagination run wild and get scared out of your mind as a kid.

The flipped POV between a killer and a victim also gets featured in the 1995 movie Strange Days (written by James Cameron!) which takes place in a world where there exist devices that can record and playback every single thing a person was feeling/seeing/hearing when the recording was made. This gets used to a horrifying effect when a woman gets violently abused and is then murdered while seeing and feeling everything from the killers POV in realtime.

Back in the 80s, I saw Vampire Princess Miyu (OVA only, subbed) and loved it. I only have 2 episodes of it now and have been looking for the other 2 for a long time. Another reason I love it is that it shows Kyoto station before it was rebuilt, back when I was living in Kyoto. They even drew the building I used to work in.

Creepypastas can get some pretty good scares outta me. The best ones have this mythical mystery built in within the entire community where it's believable enough that it's like, "Okayyy, is this real?" When I was a kid, I used to be deathly afraid of the Slender-Man in its peak. All of those slender sighting videos, hieroglyphic evidence videos and articles, and all the signs he was coming after you; especially if you're a kid. I was so scared I literally had a hallucination of him appearing outside my window! As much as I hated those days, you just don't find those types of horror experiences often.

Talking about Tales of the Macabre with my friends, I think we figured out the exact way to phrase why these Junji Itou adaptations keep failing. Junji Itou has a ton of incredibly camp ideas. You look at some of his stories and the premise is just rediculous. However, he presents it in such a way that you can't see the camp, you just see is horrifyingly skillful artwork. Without that level of skill, they are just camp stories. I will say the Uzumaki adaptation is looking promising. The 45 second teaser they released shows that they are putting everything into making it look good. However, between already being 3 years late, not getting an update since last June, and the knowledge that Adult Swim's parent company axed a large majority of non-Velma animated series and I have to say at this point it isn't likely to be completed.
@vivvy_0
@vivvy_0 Жыл бұрын
what does camp mean?
@arcticwendigo2062
@arcticwendigo2062 Жыл бұрын
@@vivvy_0 I'd guess they either mean Tldr: A) Campy: as in like a spoofy horror movie. B) Camp: like a campfire story. Full explanation: A) Campy: "absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a usually humorous way." Basically just a story that seems basic and a bit mundane, not hitting anything deep. Like a spoofy horror movie. I disagree personally if that's what they meant, because I think most of his stories follow a plot line that, while it might be simple and can ramp up quickly, usually hit some pretty interesting psychological horror points that seem more focused on a person's fear than their thought process of said fear. Or B) Camp is meant to mean campfire story esque, in that they're the story you would tell to your friends if you're in a spooky mood. Usually these don't focus on too much detail, and tend to lack a lot of substance, so once again I disagree, but less so than with A.

In my experience the best haunted houses are the ones where they make you go through a dark narrow corridor and have a bunch of people jump out on you. Storylines give you too much time to think, Its best when the environments are over the top, and there are just a lot of people there to scare you, like i went in a haunted house where at one point you have to squeeze through a narrow gap and above you on top of the walls there are a bunch of people reaching their arms at you making banging on the walls ect

A good horror anime that no one remembers: Ghost Hunt. Everyone forgot it because of it's generic name and character designs, but it delivers pretty well. I think the reason why Isekai is so popular is that it's easy to write in. It's basically paint-by-number at the start usually. The reader and the main character(s) are both in the same situation and are trying to understand their new situation all while leaning on the same background (usually). This lets authors basically have their story hit the ground running. Ex: There is a world of difference between introducing a reader to KonoSuba's, Spider-Kun, Slime-kun, or Overlord; versus, Mistborn, Way of Kings, Malazan, First Law, Powdermage, etc. I'm not sure how much this is the author's fault, how much its the publishing industry's fault, or the readers.

I've had this revelation myself recently: because of the medium of anime ("cartoonish" / animated), horror is just the one genre that anime just can not do... anime simply just can not be made to be scary, no matter how hard they try, it just can not be done, directly because of the very medium that is anime gore, brutal, gruesome, gross, disturbing, suspense, jump scares, etc, yes, but actual 'horror', no (not sure if manga can do it or not, maybe it can, or maybe not)
