Back after a little break! Next video will be about dimming drivers with Home Assistant and then when my PPFD sensor returns from factory calibration, I'll be reviewing the HLG Scorpion Rspec and Scorpion Diablo lights.

You say keep lights close to the plants, but I always see lights 2 ft away or better. Why are the lights in the big grows so far from the plants? This is confusing.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 3 жыл бұрын
@@babiibee8968 Depends on the power of the light and the size of the space. If you ran a 650R at 12" in a 5x5, you'd have a 2000 umol/m2/s hot spot in the center and nothing on the outside edge. For a little light like this, you need it close to hit half-decent PPFD and since it's a small space, it'll still hit decent edge numbers at that distance. Bar-style lights tend to run closer as well compared to board-style.

@@babiibee8968 you are seeing commercial grows using 1000w and equivalent lights. At that power level, lights can be farther away and use that distance to achieve a broader spread

When I read "HLG100" I thought you had brought back one of your original quantum boards. Nice to see the updated hardware. The efficiency is stellar, and ballast simplicity is beginner like the original 65 watt HLG boards. At only 90-91 watts, this is strong contender in the 2' x 2' grow space for flowering and fruiting plants. For greens growers, it would even cover a larger area well. Still enjoying the robotics on PPFD readings.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt - indeed. You could stretch this to a 3x3 for greens which would be very cost-effective.

May I plug this into a timer and then the timer to an extension cord that is plugged into the wall. Note: the catalogue I got from the store states "Extensions are not recommended as use may cause damage and break the connector on board." What does that mean exactly? Thank you!

Mine is at 12 inches too. So this review is a relief cuz I'm growing in a 3 foot tall tent.
@DigitalMadrigal
@DigitalMadrigal 2 жыл бұрын
Update: light is at very top of tent tied with industrial zip ties. Distance is 10 inches. Light burn? Yes. But it's not terrible. Seems to light green the top leaves in the scrog. Not yellow them. But they are canoeing to varying degrees, and many have slightly burnt tips and serrations. Tho I had a salt buildup as well (coco in fabric pots). So those tips might be explained by that. The important thing though is that the buds are still coming on strong. She seems to really like this light despite the burn.

The diodes are in fact LM301H - this is a preproduction version of this board that I received for testing prior to release. The badging on the board is old and says it’s an HLG100V2 and powered by LM301B, but I assure you it is LM301H. I tried to explain this at 0:12 with the white text at the bottom of the screen but evidently I should have left it up longer and mentioned it in my voice over. Sorry for the confusion!
@dertythegrower
@dertythegrower 3 жыл бұрын
Its the same thing GreenGenes (pacific light concepts) proved the LM301H and LM301B is basically the same thing, one with H is just marketable to Horticulture (hence H). The B is the basic, but the difference he showed on the official samsung website is just that the LM301H has a different reading of light, while H uses lumens or whatnot, which growers use as a measure of plants. Something like that.

I have one of these I've been using for my seedling tent but do you think I could use it to bring a single plant to harvest? Or would it just be incredibly small yields because it isn't strong enough? I get jt has the extra deep reds which is why I think it might work but I don't want to only get a few "flowers" off the plant lol

Hey ! I'm planning of running a board with no heatsink and was wondering what would a decent board temperature range be and where should I measure it. Should I place a temperature probe next to a led ? Or are infrared readings enough ? Thanks in advance.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Well, this board runs at 50C as you saw, and it's fine, so that'd be a safe target. Pull up the data sheet for the diode you'll be using and have a look at the flux vs temp or forward voltage vs temp for some idea of how much heat will affect performance, though it'd be difficult to get a true Ts or Tc measurement like those graphs are likely based on. If you want to use infrared, just slap a strip of black electrical tape on whatever you want to measure and let it get to temperature, then point the thermometer at the tape strip. Bare metal emissivity is no good and can really throw off IR readings (www.flir.ca/discover/rd-science/use-low-cost-materials-to-increase-target-emissivity/). I usually just measure the back of the sink somewhere in the middle with a probe, depending on the layout of the diodes. You might be able to find a Tc measurement point on the surface of the board or strip too, depending on what you're using, and that'd be the ideal place to stick a probe.

I hoped the white text at bottom of screen at 0:12 would address this but I should have taken time to explain in my voice over. HLG sent a pre-production version of board with new diodes but old badging on the board. It has the labels of the HLG100 V2 but is actually an HLG100 Rspec.

HLG sent me this to test before they were in full production. You can also see in this same frame that the 2700K and 4000K boxes are not checked, and it is 3000K and 5000K that is checked. Meijui LED and KingBrite LED is still cheaper, and the same parts, about half the price which is incredible savings. And it shipped in 7 days, Samsung LM301H,Cree Deep Red 660nm between, and waterproof and all. English emails, and Kingbrite is basically the cheapest you can buy with these samsung and meanwell LED prebuilt kits.

It's too bad HLGs products are mostly out of stock except the most expensive stuff. I bought 4 qb132s in 4000k over a year ago and was planning on getting 4 more in 3000k for my 4x4. Been out of stock for about a year now in all colors. It's too bad they seem to have gave up on budget conscious DIY people like me. I would be willing to pay$150 for a 4 pack of these 90w ones tested here.
