Wow! Amazing hostas. I can not believe you remember all the names of those hostas. Thanks for sharing your beautiful gardens. I found that moles dig up the roots or eat the roots of hostas, so if I see that they are not growing or struggling I just dig them up and replant them in the same place. Then they do fine. The same with coral bells they just like to be dug up fluff there roots and replant and they last forever.

Your garden areas are so pretty!!! You absolutely do have an eye for what will look good together. I used to live in Plymouth, MI and inherited hostas planted in the sun, which did ok. Now I live in southeastern NC on the coast. The sun is WAY too hot to have hostas in all day sun. Besides, we have lots of deer which will eat any type of hosta I plant in a skinny minute. So I am just going to enjoy your shade garden areas.

Well, fist I always try to start with a small plant/root ball...then if I dig and see a root, depending on how big the root is/and how established the tree is i may chop it off with my shovel. Otherwise, I plant around the root. Most of the plants I plant around trees are Hosta which have no problem rooting in for me, they are such hardy plants with a strong root system. And Heuchera! Those have tiny webbed shallow roots so those are easy to squeeze in rooty soil. I do make sure its watered really well and watching it for the fist year to make sure its okay. And move it if needed but since I only really do the Heuchera and Hosta they seem to not be bothered by it. I hope that helps!

There are quite a few that can be planted in sun but it also depends on your zone and how intense your sun is. My zone I can get away with it (zone 4/5) The ones ive found sucessful in sun are...Sum and Substance, August Moon, Blue Angle, Halcyon, Royal and Gold Standard, Remember Me, Liberty, So Sweet, Rainforest sunrise.
