I have one criticism, I like to dig the hole then fill with water, after it soaks in then add plant and compost. This method helps prevent forming a crust around the plant.

Good day sir at timestamp 4:22 I am going to set you straight on Tomato's ....... Tomato's do not need to go into the ground at all as they can grow upside down in a Hanging Basket as a hanging plant ......... put eggshells a foot away around the base of your plant and should help prevent crawling insects

My great grand dad would mulch his tomatoes with rotten hay. There's an old newspaper clipping of him holding two tomatoes that both weighed over 2lbs. Good luck with your endeavors. God bless 🙂👍

Figured out where you guys are. You said north MS and I heard a T38 and the only Air Force base I know of is where it is. Nice tomatoes!! Put a tums in the ground by each one. It helps with blossom end rot. It’s the calcium. Mom and Dad taught me that back in the 60s. Been doing it since.

My father used a turning plow to make a deep 1-2 foot drench to plant a late tomato patch. As the plants grew we pulled dirt in around the plants. We would remove all leaf branches except the top 3 or 4 branches and the bud. We would plant the tomato plants horizontally in a hole we dug in the bottom of the trench. A new root will form where you cut off each stem. The plant will develop a strong root system and provide fresh tomatoes until frost. Our soil in NE Georgia is red clay.

So the following is some info & ideas on tomatoes. Determinant - grows 3-5' called a bush type. Indeterminant - grows 6-20' (you can pinch the top to stop height growth. Fish heads placed in the bottom of hole (save and freeze for next years crop), match books (remove cover) place in bottom of hole, chicken poop (be careful spread thin). Cages made from old fence that's been torn out of fence row. Make into a circle about 18+". As the tomatoes grow you can place the limbs thru the squares to support the plant no need to tie to stakes as they grow. End of season just stack at the end of garden till next year. Can use small stakes 2 or 3 to hold cages in place. I am in no way trying you how to grow your garden just hints from my 30+ years of growing tomatoes in my garden. I seen where you have already pulled your green beans. Should have enough time to grow a second crop (as if you didn't have enough to do). Keep the thumb GREEN.
