Houkago Teibou Nisshi is Why I Watch Anime

Kuuki-kei stories are not unique to Japan, but are certainly ubiquitous within anime. Seasonal watchers will be familiar with this type of show, the 'girl joins some niche club' genre. But I really adore them. They show that you don't need big conflicts and crazy happenings to make a compelling story; sometimes the struggle of daily living can be just as interesting. I watch anime because of its uniqueness and variedness, the ability to weave a tale of epic proportions-and also the ability to capture something so fleeting as the joy that comes with catching your first fish. I hope you can get where I'm coming from.

Love this type of anime: just people living normally. Days pass, nothing changes that much. That's why some of my favorite anime are Non non biyori and Aria. Of course, I also enjoy action, mystery, comedy and romance (the only genres I avoid are music and some mecha) but sometimes you just need a show to relax and experience something you'd never do through anime.

This anime shows my main reasons why I watch anime and I totally agree with you. I discovered the charm of ballroom dance, or badminton, running, cheerleading, motorcycle, camping and even music. Volleyball became my favorite sport after watching anime. I've never experienced so much diversity in western media. Anime teach me about Japanese culture, but sometimes they also teach me how to fish and I'm totally into it.

I have been watching animes since 2016, but never found slice of life, mainly iyashikei interesting and thought boring. However, when I went into cs major and start busy with coding stuff, popular livestream animes haven't became entertain my mind as before and never work out on my stress even tho I love programming. And then, I found Yuru Camp accidentally and after watching the whole series, I really got into iyashikei and start to think how they importantly play a role in life. From that point, i always crave for iyashikei every season although they are criminally underrated and rarely released. Thus, I always appreciate animes like Houkago Teibou Nisshi, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō, Yuru Camp and etc.

Cute girls go fishing; a lovely find in such a difficult time, as well as Super Fishing Grander Musashi. Finding these fishing animes as an angler myself, kills 2 birds with one stone with my most favourite things in the world. Cool thing about this anime, is that it utilizes real life fishing techniques that you can use in real life (even though most is saltwater based, hence breakwater). Whether it is slice of life fishing girls or shonen bass fishing, anime never ceases to amaze me on what subjects it can cover.

As a long time fishermen and an anime hobbyist. This anime match the feel of how I caught my first fish and trying different way to catch them and other species of fish. I loved there no conflict and just fishing to enjoy life. In my opinion it is better then Grander Mushashi as a fishing anime. Grander Mushashi has too much conflict and although the main character do catch fish. You never learn anything about fishing and it hard to relate the the main character unlike on Houkago Teibou Nisshi.

LOL yeah I actually really like this show as well for exactly the same reasons. I'm a creative writing major and the idea of conflict theory is very prevalent (though we study it in terms of how we can both apply and go against it) and SoL anime like this are such a breath of fresh air in terms of not having to need traditional conflict to tell its story. In fact, like you said, there is so much other types of conflict going on and the plot is moving forward in its own way and still gives us development as we watch over these characters growing and learning about themselves and the people around them. I'm not sure I really saw much appraisal of shows like Asteroid in Love either which was one of my favorite shows of last season that I would consider in this SoL/Iyashikei/Kuuki-kei (thank you for teaching me something new today) type genre and had so much development and plot going on in the same way that I can see this show having once its not on Hiatus.

Holy crap, I'm glad I found this video. When this came out, I instantly wanted to watch Houkago Teibou Nisshi (and this video of course). Maybe I wanted a fill-in while waiting for Yuru Camp S2. Maybe because I was hoping this WOULD BE another diamond in the rough. For whatever reason, I never thought I would be so happy to watch this show and that I was hype when it started up again after being delayed. I was honestly afraid it would be postponed forever, and I liked it a lot. But, I didn't really know why I liked it either, and I was hoping and waiting for someone, who was infinitely more skilled with their words than I, to analyze it to help me get a better understanding of the show. And thanks to your video, I found that. I definitely agree and even relate with your points, and now I at least have a step in the right direction as to why I like this show so much. It's the characters, their dynamic, the atmosphere, the setting, and tone. But more than that, I actually have to sit down and think about this one through. So, thanks for that :D On another note, I actually fished with my dad over the weekend for the first time because of this anime and caught myself two croakers (and, in the process, maybe lost three hooks and sinkers, cracked my phone, and embarrassingly thought I caught a big boi when in actuality I just got the line stuck on some rocks). It was actually quite a fun and interesting experience. So, hey! Yay for anime in motivating me to do something other than sitting around during quarantine! Sorry for the wall of text, but I really wanted to express my gratitude for giving this anime a much needed serious discussion and letting people know that this show exists. Anyways, I should head back to my paper before I run out of time! Good job on the video!

Excellent, well-thought out review. Anime is very big in this type which even has its own genre label, Slice of Life. Aria, Haibane-Renmei, and Marimite all fit here. There are no antagonists to fight against but there is drama and struggle to achieve some goal in life which means overcoming one's own limitations. As such they are very inspirational.

It's American cinema that focuses so much on struggle and etc. There's plenty of European cinema that does something akin to kuuki-kei. I always love to mention Stalker. It's literally a window in an alien world, without any serious story, just a group of humans interacting with each other and with the setting around them. An experience we've never even considered. I love it for the same reasons I love the fishing anime.

So glad that someone is talking about slice of life anime, rather then just shounen. I started anime in 2018 and my first few anime I watched was k on. I chose this one because it the animation was beautiful and the characters are funny. K on has a special place in my heart and is one of my favourite and it what got me into slice of life anime. I just finished dairy of our days at the breakwater club (anime) and I really enjoyed it. I'm curious reading the manga. 😊

This reminds me of how the kishotenketsu 4-act story model differs from western story models like the hero's journey in that it can lack conflict. According to 4-act, you don't necessarily need conflict to have a compelling story, you just need a "twist", which can be very mundane.

If u still young and full of energy, go for shounen stuff. Your head are still have some rooms for conflict, conspiracy, and hardcore actions. It's understandable if u always bashing SOL animes. But here in iyashikei universe, most of us are grown ass gentlemen who already tired of heavy stuff out there & looking for refreshing stuff like this. In this phase our head have no space anymore for fictional conflicts etc.. yeah... some of us had in your shoes while still young (loving action stuff, overpowered MC, brawling, weapons, scars, etc). But in the end.. everybody evolves, needs and preference will change, everybody have their own time and will understand the beauty of "slice of life" Both Slow Loop & Houkago Teibou Nisshi, I love both.

Theres been a lot of anime for the past couple decades like this show, the focus of the minor mundane life of a profession or hobby. Going through my life, I just went down one tube while there are limitless tubes you could have gone through or never will never have through. Anime life this shows me something that I have never experienced, something I may get into, or highlight my hobby. You say they are not unique but I think kuuki-kei is largely absent in western works.

No, all anime should always be about ignorant boys wanting to be the best at something. You know, like being the king of pirates, or crying yourself when most people have super powers but you don't, or maybe even killing demons and having a sister that can't speak and is incidentally the best girl without question. And oh, of course, getting 500% stronger when their friends get hurt or they just happened to think about them during combat.
