The tragic irony of Viserys’ lament about never facing a crucible is that he failed to realize not all crucibles are faced on a battlefield with swords.

what we are witnessing in this first season appears to be his crucible. He has had no joy without some sort of pain alongside it. He is besought on all sides to name Aegon the heir, but he must do what he thinks is correct, and he has so far held to his convictions that Rhenera will be the heir.

The scene with Maester Mellos and an apprentice caring for Viserys after he collapsed nudged the narrative more in the direction of the citadel or at least Mellos maybe not trying the best to actually heal Viserys. This is the second or third scene that heavily implies that there are other options of treatment, again a young (unknowing, not privy to the conspiracy?) Maester suggest another option, probably the one he sees fit best, the way he learned it in the books and by the citadel - however again Mellos disagrees and refuses that treatment. Considering Viserys gets worse by the episode and is maybe even dead after this episode... I think it is just odd that this got so far. Could be bad luck, infections and sepsis are potent killers, it just feels like Mellos is not even that concerned with it all.

I love the little nuances that abound in this show, such as when Otto is climbing his horse and seems to unintentionally nudge the horse with his boot and the horse makes a sound of discomfort, or when Viserys is negotiating the marriage proposal and states his compromise and there’s a brief view of his new Hand, as if suggesting whose idea the compromise was in the first place, and that they came prepared for the negotiation. Or when Criston comes to see the queen and there are erotic tapestries on the wall that are mentioned in the previous episode (as far as I recall). Or when Viserys seems slightly hesitant before drinking the sleep drought, and when we get a shot of him reflecting on his reign with his town sculpture neatly occupying almost the entirety of the background, possibly symbolising the whole of his realm. Splendid storytelling details all.

@@Captain_Insano_nomercy At first I thought it was just a minor thing, most likely accidental, but if you think about it... There’s a sea horse in the Velaryon coat of arms, so Otto putting a boot in the horse’s side might signify the Hightower-Velaryon opposition that’s been unfolding. The wedding was supposed to take place AFTER the seven days of feasting. I suspect Viserys thought Daemon posed a danger now that he has no wife and might make a move on Rhaenyra, which is why the wedding is held quickly straight after the initial feast. Rhaenyra and Laenor know her lover killed his, so there is a melancholy that their plans for "doing what they want" with their respective lovers is now over. Best laid plans of mice and men? Was that why the rat appeared at the end? lol Great episode, I was on the edge of my seat at the end.

I don't know how it's presented in the book but Sir Criston's "snap" at the end of the episode made about as much sense to me as the snap of Daenerys in season 8 of GoT. The salty cherry on top of my wound of disappointment is that, apparently, Sir Criston was simply allowed to leave as if he didn't just interrupt a royal wedding with a rage induced murder to randomly meet up with an unguarded queen. Seriously, what the fuck?

This enormously irritated me too man. The books did it very logically: Joff gets killed in a melee, whoops accident, sorry! Legal murder. Snart. He also destroys break bones in the same day, solidifying Cole as a badass. You don't gotta like him but you will respect him. Now he simply looks idiotic and rash. It makes no sense at all how he left that hall on his own two feet

i think it makes total sense for noone to really intervene in him killing someone - in the end, he is a kingsguard. only one that can command him to stop is either the king, or maybe if he gets stopped by the other kingsguards. in such a chaotic event where noone really knows whats going on, the other guards probably thought he was protecting the royalties from some sort of danger.

that is not hard to explain. joffery pulled a dagger during fight and just before that deamon was kissing princess in public( which the king saw) after she challenged him to "abduct" her. and he disappeared at end. maybe he did try, probably why wedding was held immediately . so it is quite possible to explain cole's actions as defending the princess, and joffery interrupting him , especially so if lenor's family don't want his relationship with murdered man out in the public.

@Brendan Fraser vs The Truth no it didn't "come out from nowhere". watch and listen to acting and dialogue carefully next time. cole thought his relationship with rhenaya was dishonorable to begin with , so he confessed just as he proposed marriage. those are the only ways remaining for him that has some shred of honor. and when that joffrey proposed the 4 person open intrigue arrangement/threat and the feeling he would be on same level with that guy, made him lose it. btw if rhenaya wanted "arrangements", she should have ensured that lenor and his boyfriend don't propose an open arrangement to cole, after he had already indicated what has passed was dishonorable in his own eyes. if she wanted another kind of knight from a noble house, who is happy with political/personal arrangements, for whom "honor" is a meaningless word, she had a lot of choice, other than knight with combat experience for whom honor was no mere word. as for why he was not arrested i pointed out some reasons why in my last comment

I wonder if the horse was skittish because Daemon smelled like dragon...Rhanerya's mother mentioned that there is a smell to those who have just ridden a dragon in ep. 1 and it would mean that Daemon had plausible deniablitiy with Rhea's horse throwing her. Makes me wonder if he intend to kill her from the outset, if he was still mulling it over, or even if her taunting him after the horse rolled over her was what made him choose.

@@ExtraVictoryThe first rule of good writing, Extra: show, don't tell. I'm not in the habit of believing what the showrunners or any artist about says about their work. Corporate showrunners in particular will be met with disbelief. I'd be a fool to do that after "Dany Kind Of Forgot." So far none of the episodes have been so sophisticated as to require alternate interpretations to what is spelled out pretty literally on the screen. A murderous, power mad man showing up and killing his powerful wife to add her power to his own shouldn't be a stretch on a show about men who use the women in their lives to further their own goals. In the first episode a wife is killed by her husband to reap the power of her womb. So the showrunners can tell us what they want in their little videos, I'm paying more attention to what they spent many months and many millions to show us.

One thing you didnt cover was Cole anticipated being executed when he was spurred to confession. He perhaps felt like this was his final avenue of absolution and when he was instead spared, saw himself as a liability as long as he was alive, and Joffrey offers a similar liability. So in his own deranged way he thinks he's helping secure the future of the empire by eliminating 2 potentially dangerous distractions (Joffrey and himself). Because we don't get a ton of time with him or learn the nature of his order it does kind of come out of left field and feels like sudden onset madness, which has echoes of the worst seasons of GOT and worries me a bit. But on the whole I think it works

Interesting, but that doesn’t ring true for me. I don’t see him as being in an emotional place of wanting to help the crown carry on a loveless marriage. I can see perhaps a quasi-suicidal note in his attitude even before the killing, but that is because he’s so sick at heart for having his elopement plan rejected by Rhaenyra and he is at the breaking point over his personal sense of honor and identity.

Daemon reached out to the horse and it smelled and pulled away. The horse smell the dragon on him, making the horse enter flight or fight. When rhea reached for her bow, the quick and frantic action spooked the horse, in that same instance daemon lunged at the horse, causing the overreaction, thinking it was bout to be eaten. Hi Robert, Yet another masterful video. If I may add, there are two details that you've left untouched. First, GM Melos' reluctance to try his acolyte's alleged more potent treatment. Second, there's a rat licking Joffrey's blood off the floor at the very end of the episode. I don't know what you'd make of it, but I find myself more and more on the side of Lady Dustin here.

For me what was missing from the video, the queen's interruption of the King's speech is a turning point for Alicent. She has enough of what was done to her father, family and children not in succession line soon. She is standing up and starting to assert her postion. Her interruption is about power and control. Also she wore green, her house's color not the King's color. As walks, she turns eyes to her house as an acknowledgment. Larys Stong says and asks "The king will not be happy. Right in the midst of his speech. The beacon on the Hightower, do you know what color glows when Oldtown calls its banners to war? Response was "Green". War is coming, but it won't be a HOTD without it! Enjoyed this episode more then the last one. Looking forward to the next one.

I still suspect the Mellos is more loyal to Otto than to the king and that the tea in the last episode was sent without the King's knowledge. Also, I noted that more modern, herbal treatments were suggested by a young Maester but turned down by Mellos. If Mellos is, as I believe, more Hightower than Targ, then he may be invested in the King either not getting better or at least appearing weak. Also, I don't think anybody really knows that the crown prince was in the Vale so it really doesn't necessarily clash with the book lore.

I had complete sympathy for Criston until this episode. Sexual temptation from an attractive woman who holds power over you conflicting with your honor and station is a sympathetic struggle. @@TransportSupremo Crispin likely thought he was being blackmailed by Joffrey. I feel Crispin has been living in abject terror of being tortured to death, starting any time now, since sleeping with Rhaenrya. He probably hasn't slept since. He's a Knight so can't face the fact he's scared sh1tless. When he asks Rhaenrya to run away with him, this is his cry for help. He can't admit to Rhaenrya that he is scared of death by torture and needs her to reassure him that she won't let that happen to him. Her speech about duty to the realm coming first could easily be interpreted as saying she would allow him to die screaming if it helps her achieve power. That's her betrayal of him, putting him in a place of extreme danger she doesn't see. It doesn't help that he can't admit the truth of his conflict, his abject terror He asks Alicent for the mercy of a quick death. Man is terrified, has been for days, probably hasn't slept at all. Why is Alicent so hurt that Rhaenyra doesn't trust her or openly confide in her anymore? Edit: especially or particularly with matters of her "love life"? It's one of the more slightly confusing choices for the show that the character is written in a way that makes it SEEM like she doesn't understand why Rhaenyra would 1) no longer fully trust her loyalty, 2) won't give up the throne (edit: in the future), and 3) won't continue to act as an expected/ normal (non heir to the throne) princess would, especially when she never truly has. She (Alicent) also acts like she's been betrayed, outright by Rhaenyra directly and personally. Most people have stated that coupled with this feeling of betrayal, is the fear of her children being put in danger from Rhaenyra's potential to hurt them, but so far, for now at least, there is no definitive evidence of that. The fear is easily understandable, even if at this point in time, lacking fully grounded legitimacy. But one could suppose that the show runners were so worried about her being too easily and closely compared to (the show version) Cersei, based upon what people may have read and surmised for themselves in the book, that they're trying to make her as little as possible an outright type of character that falls fully into one category or another (villain or nieve victim of circumstances) and give her some (however weird or misinterpreted either by herself or the audience) reasonings for what choices/ acts she commits. If handled well, it's actually a good ploy for the story. I am worried though that what they're trying to do will have the character come across as some odd mixture of Cersei and Sansa (or anyone else) as they were portrayed in the previous series. Hopefully that won't be the case for this character (or any others i.e. Criston Cole currently being compared to Jon Snow/ Shae.) Hopefully the story only keeps getting better in the episodes and seasons to come.

Up until the moment Otto screamed in her face to wake up and understand, Alicent was on the same page as Viserys. Rhaenyra was, is, the heir. So she was never confused about why Rhaenyra wouldn't give up the throne. She understood, and agreed. I really don't understand your qualms about her character.
@condensedman
@condensedman Жыл бұрын
Here’s my hunch. Rhaenyra breached Alicent’s trust, and this is big, because her children are claimants to the throne. Earlier in the episode, Otto mentions that she can prepare Aegon to rule or beg Rhaenyra to spare her children. Had Rhaenyra not lied to her about her innocence, she would have been more relaxed, but now that she knows that Rhaenyra would do anything to maintain her position, she can’t trust her enough to show mercy to her children.

The last 10 minutes of this episode felt like finding a band-aid at the bottom of your plate when you ate a gourmet meal. Things deviated hugely from the source material here after doing such a beautiful set up for events such as the tourney (Where an angry Ser Cole kills Joffery in the tournament), the marriage and the king's death. Why did the soldiers come in there to begin with? How exactly could Ser Criston get away with slapping around Laenor like that? Where is the explanation for this sudden mayhem with no follow up?? They changed the events drastically and slammed it all together in an incoherent and rushed way that made little sense. I wish they had taken the time to play this out according to the book. This is the only time I was disappointed in this series.

They already showed a tourney and death in the first episode. Probably too same-y is why they avoided similar scenes so soon. Plus changes when adapting a book will always happen, for better or worse. I enjoy being surprised from time to time, though I can understand your concern and criticism. No doubt Alicent pleads with Viserys to spare Criston's life, or spins it in a way to make him look like a hero somehow. Guess we'll have to wait until episode 6 for the answers.

I thought is was great. Ser Cole probably thought he wasn't getting away with it hence the suicide attempt being stopped by the queen. The build up was good. He basically felt he had nothing left to lose but his life. And than this fake tourney knight coming up to him and crushing him some more by showing tourney knights have no honor and rubbing in that he gave up his honor to be a f*cktoy for a spoiled princess. The soldiers came running in cos there was a ruckus and the ruckus was Ser Cole bashing the Knight of Kisses i like how they did it cos this is basically what happens in such a situation only the people right in the front know what's going on while the people in the back are frantically looking and seeing nothing through the mass of people. The hysterical people running away from the danger not knowing why they are running away. That helps with the rumors of what actually transpired. He probably gets away with it with help of the queen and how it happened nobody in the back knowing exactly who hit who. And i don't think Corlys and Rhaenys are that mad about it, the boy has a duty he needs to fulfill, and losing the gay lover of their son is really a bonus, plus Laenor wasn't seriously hurt. A tourney would have been great but this is more in line with the state of mind Ser Cole had and probably helps the ambiguity around Rhaenyra and her lovers and her offspring. plus it puts a domper on the plans Jaehearys had made you see it's all slipping away from him he has lost the direction of the situation. Starting with Daemon showing up, his wife interrupting him, Daemon acting all incesty on the dancefloor with his daughter, again, and it ends with a common brawl.

As a horse owner, and someone who has worked with horses for years the way he approached the horse already had it uneasy. The horse was unfamiliar with him and was already cautious, Daemon approaching it as he did contributed and it reared. The weight of a rider can throw a horse off balance as they are used to rearing without a rider and can pull the center of gravity backwards. I believe it was fully intentional that he caused the horse to do this. That and another commentor mentioned dragon-scent; which could be a factor but I obviously know little of the interactions between horses and dragons! There's my two cents.

Yet another strong episode , the series gets better and better each week. Enjoying how Condal and his team are using the multiple differing accounts from F&B and either leaning into one or creating their own that works within those possibilities. Enjoyed the wedding sequence and getting a deeper look at Driftmark and High Tide in particular. High Tide was well done and impressive. And given how well both have done thus far , I will very much miss Alcock and Carey's performances. In general HotD does a great job balancing the character development , scheming and machinations with a fair bit of action and spectacle. Never overdoing the latter thus far , not wanting to overload us at first or be heavily reliant on the action early on ; creating a great foundation to build from. Especially with so much action on the way in the future in this series their choices make a lot of sense and overall are just balancing those elements quite well. HotD is hitting any production and creative aspect so well where it can appeal to almost anyone while simultaneously also exciting us hardcore book fans via providing so much from the lore and just so many in depth book concepts / elements to the smallest detail at times. Brilliant series so far and the highlight of my TV / streaming content viewing each week.

I’m late to this thread. During Rhae and Laenor’s wedding I noticed when Daemon pulled Rhae away from the dance floor, he held her close as though to kiss her. I believe Criston saw them and charged towards them but perhaps was held back by Joffrey. The screaming began, I saw Daemon walk away. That might have been the reason he killed Joffrey.

Man, Viserys really should have used Rheanyra's wedding as a coronation celebration and become king regent, or whatever the appropriate title is. Especially considering his health.

@@monzastark6198 what do you mean? Children ascend the throne when their reigning parent dies, so I don't see why Viserys stepping down so his adult daughter can ascend would be an unthinkable thing to do. If he can decree that gender no longer matters to the monarchy, why would stepping down before his death be any different?

Wasn't the feast supposed to be followed by 7 days of tourney, after which a wedding? Maybe I got that backwards but the wedding ceremony felt rushed, like they'll get married instead that night.

Yes. And it was at this tourney that Cole lost his shit and killed Joffery. Frankly, they set this up perfectly in the movie by having Joffery basically blackmail Cole. Now he kills him in what can be considered just at tourney accident. Instead they mush this, the wedding and most likely Visery's death all into one confusing scene. The only blot on an excellent series so far.

I see a lot of people thinking that what Criston did was out of left field and I think you’re explanation made a lot of sense. But I think the lynchpin where he actually attacked him was that Lonmouth was not taking the situation seriously and it looks like he was cuddling snuggling with and kissing Laenor right in the middle of a feast while Daemon was flirting with Rhyyra. I think that’s what did it for him in the end that’s when he broke

Corlys and Rhaenys discussion was quite fun to watch. First, Corlys asks it he overplayed his hand. He's not really sure he can push that far. He insulted the King. He tried to overtake the throne for his family. Second, they discuss Laenor being gay. And Corlys seems to think it can be fixed, because, apparently, he kinda tried both in his youth and figured he's straight only with Rhaenys? Third, Rhaenys says he's putting their kid in danger. And goes with her overall bitter "I got screwed, so now I know how things are" attitude.

I'd have to rewatch the first scene to say for sure, but the horse was very clearly extremely skittish (probably just a reaction Daemon's terrible vibes and the nervousness of Rhea), so when she suddenly went for her bow, if Daemon made any sort of sudden movement (especially with being in a flowing cape) could have caused the horse to react really strongly. Long story short, I don't think it's super realistic, especially for a horse that is taken out hunting, something that would require it to stay calm and cool

A lot of comments here about Lady Royce's horse rearing up because Daemon smelled like dragon. Except we have 8 seasons of GOT with dragons and horses being near each other and not having that big of a problem. Maybe all those horses in all those scenes were horses that had months of training and socialization to be able to tolerate dragons. But that is never shown. Maybe many of those horses threw many riders and there are hundreds of broken, crippled, or dead Dothraki from Mereen to King's Landing, all thrown by horses when a dragon flew by. But that is never shown either. And this horse belongs to a noble in a land ruled by dragon riders so it's more likely to have seen and smelled dragons before than any Dothraki horse. So if this is the actual excuse the writers give, it's a pretty weak one. Not that I have a better reason for the horse to rear up. Maybe Daemon just got lucky.

Quite sad they decided to go against the book quite a lot on this one. -There's no mention of Deamon interfering with Rhea's dead, and the show didn't need to cast this dark light into him, either. -Joffrey Lonmouth actually died of injuries caused Cole, but not on a feast, but on the Tourney that would take place after. - I hated that the show made Cole admit of his sin. There was no need for that and rift between Queen and Princess could have still been explained due to ambition, as per the book. I don't quite get why they rushly married the couple right after the feast, when King Viserys clearly explained it would happen after 7 days of feasting and jousting. If they wanted to speed things up, why even bother mentioning the 7 days of partying? Your comments were spot on. Nice one.

1:05 that's not clear because he was trying to stop the horse. The horse freaked out because of her sudden movement. I suspect it's an intentionally created confusion by the show makers for some plot in the future.

I’m even more confused now than I was after the last episode. Multiple aspects of this episode make no sense at all which makes me wonder did HBO change events significantly from the books? Usually show events based on GRRM’s books make sense, even if they are brutal, violent or depraved. But what does it accomplish for Ser Christen to kill Laenor’s boyfriend? If he killed Laenor out of jealousy that would at least make a certain kind of twisted sense but killing the other guy achieves nothing. And in response the king scraps an entire week’s worth of planned pomp and circumstance and marries the heir to the throne off with no one in attendance? That makes less than no sense. This show is rapidly becoming very disappointing.
