I think you’re a little too harsh regarding the dialogue, remember the first episode of GoT didn’t have constant brilliant dialogue all the time, it was spread out over several seasons, this episode already has some really cool lines such as: “The gods have yet to make a man who lacks the patience for absolute power” "My wife and son are dead. I will not sit here and suffer crows that come to feast on their corpses" “The iron throne is the most dangerous seat in the realm” "The Dragon's blood runs deep." To be fair, most people forget that there was loads of additional dialogue and scenes that D&D added in the early seasons, many of which are iconic. They didn't just copy and paste the dialogue. And most of Season 6's dialogue was not from a book (the average person loved it at the time). Off the top of my head, Lady Olenna's dialogue in her final scene in Season 7 was easily better than anything in this episode (and Cersei's dialogue before leaving the remaining Sandsnakes to die in the cellar). *They messed up but we should look at things in a nuanced way.* The majority of adaptations of good works are absolutely terrible. But yeah, I don't think D&D could write something like this, with no dialogue to even start from. I was impressed with the first episode and hope It stays this good.
@michaelhenman8683
@michaelhenman8683 Жыл бұрын
I will add the caveat that most of the dialogue from early GoT wasn't copied directly. It was very much adapted, mostly by modernising it and making it a little more punchy, since dialogue in the books could be extremely longwinded. But still that is a much easier job than making dialogue from scratch.

Coming into this show knowing nothing about this conflict Daemon doesn’t really come off as a villain to me. Yeah his kind of big intro is killing off a bunch of criminals and then later he insults his own wife (which I’m guessing he never wanted to marry so makes sense) and the dead wife of Otto Hightower (which seems messed up in the moment but then we learn that Otto isn’t actually some loyal servant like we’re first led to believe so he is kinda justified with this insult) but then after the funeral scene he seems genuinely concerned about the well-being of Viserys and Rhaenyra. His insults towards Viserys loss of his wife and son seems to come from the fact he is hurt that his brother doesn’t trust him to be his hand. He cares about his brother and like he said he sees the small council for what they truly desire and feels he is the only one that can protect Viserys. He honestly is my favorite character so far

You've basically hit the nail on the head with who Daemon is, coming from a book reader. The problem with Supercuts saying he doesn't want Daemon portrayed as a villain is that Daemon is not a good person and does some quite terrible things across the series. It's impossible to avoid those things. I think people coming into this show need to avoid wanting their favourites to be good people, and need to avoid using terms like "protagonist" and "antagonist" as a synonym for morally "good" and "bad". From anyone who has read Fire & Blood, they will know that many of the characters will not fit into these two categories, and that is how people act in real life. I think basically every character is a deuteragonist, and the show has been and will be compelling because of how their relationships between each other and throughout the plot change.

A prime example is Jaime. He’s a cocky douchebag that killed the king with a stab to the back cause he’s a coward. Then u find out he’s not actually a coward because he killed the king to save all of the ppl in the city from being massacred by wildfire. I live my life judging the character of ppl I meet for myself and not listening to what other ppl have to say about them before I meet them. We have to stop comparing this one episode to all of game of thrones/season 1 of game of thrones. Camera work and production was different then, so it makes sense to take advantage of cinematography present day. A lot of the dialogue was taken from Fire and Blood and the dialogue felt very Westeros. The intimate settings, we are going to get plenty of as they aren’t solely doing cgi. They have been filming in similar lands as they did in GoT. The difference is the magic in this show isn’t a secret, so there’s no slow burn to it which would put in place more scenes in intimate settings. This show should not be compared to GoT and should be allowed to become its own thing.

This is half right. GRRM confirmed that Aegon had a dragon dream which motivated him to conquer Westeros, the show then adapted that as the Targaryens passing down the secret heir to heir. They also connected it with the dagger. Both those aspects are show only though.

Yeah I can imagine, early on Martin never mentioned that regarding Aegon's conquest but since he has apparently add this subplot to his motivation to conquer the land, which is a game changer no doubt. Im not sure if I like it or not, but I am very assured that George will develop this in his next two books and connect it Aegon's Conquest to the prophecy of the "Prince that was promised", but I suspect that in Martin's writing this secret was lost in time (maybe the show will follow that) after so many wars between the Targaryens because we know Rhaegar had a dream about this (which would be kind of the same dream Aegon had hundred years prior). But we will def know the truth about this by the end of A Song of Ice and Fire, if George ever finishes it lol

3:56 it’s not Daenerys’s leitmotif playing when we see Rhaenyra on her dragon. It’s the dragon leitmotif. Dany and her dragons have two distinct musical themes - you hear the dragon leitmotif whenever the dragons are around, and Dany’s leitmotif in other contexts, like the Mhysa scene at the end of season 3, the finale of season 1, and when Dany burns the Khals in season 5, etc etc. I don’t imagine Djawadi will bring back Dany’s theme in House of the Dragon, but I think it is understandable that we will hear the dragon leitmotif and see it develop in new and interesting ways in this story. Musical storytelling is important, and since the dragons are the focus of this show, to me it makes sense to carry over the musical idea we most associate with them.

Just to say about Daenerys' theme, it's not really HER theme. It's the Targaryan house theme. If you notice, each house has their own theme. The Starks, Aryns, Lannisters, Martels and Tyrells all have their own respective themes. You just see Daenerys followed by the Targaryan theme because she is technically the only Targaryan that we knew of. The only individuals I'd say that had their very own Leit Motifs (character themes) in Game of Thrones would be Petyr Baelish/Littlefinger, Dany's three dragons and Lyanna and Rheagar's love. The rest are all focusing on the families, not the individual characters.

I really enjoyed the episode, for a pilot episode and having to introduce many key characters and reintroduce the audience to the world in such a different time, I think it did a good job at that. I really enjoy the characters and how they're not so cut and dry, like Daemon being a bit of a tool but Viserys siding with him on the city guard, Otto Hightower acting as hand of the king as well as seeking to elevate position through his daughter and using the king's suffering, it's such a cool start and I hope all that continues. Admittedly, the birthing scene was difficult to watch, but that was the point, so well done. The one thing that perhaps didn't sit great with me was Viserys talking to Rhaenyra about the song of Ice and fire. I did expect we'd get bits and pieces like this since the targaryens are about as entrenched in prophesy as they are inbred, but this one in particular seemed a little bit convenient for what we already know, especially since we know how underwhelming it actually ends up being. Otherwise, I'm very on board with this so far

But then the theme shifted and the shot panned to an upward view from the street, with a dragon soaring overhead. The last time we heard this theme and looked up from this view alongside the commonfolk of King's Landing, people were screaming and running in terror as Dany and Drogon bathed the street in fire. At that moment, my comfortable nostalgia twisted and I felt assured that any dealings with the Targaryens would only end in Fire and Blood.

rhaenyra feels way more like an arya type of character than daenerys imo. She talked about wanting to be a knight and explore, and not be locked down to being queen. This in cotrast to Daenerys whose entire personality trait was about claiming the throne. Polar opposites imo.
@rsync9490

Dany didn't really have much of a choice but be 'I want the throne' as 'I want the throne' means 'The king or queen in westeros doesn't try to assassinate me and any potential children I may have if I am the queen of westeros'. Arya's desire to be a knight, warrior, travel is distorted by her deep desire to inflict vengeance on those who wronged her family later on. I think if Dany were in a safe and stable position as a child, she would have different ambitions and interests.

Personally i think episode 1 of this show is much better with information about characters than ep 1 of GoT for example the first time we see Tyrion is in a Brothel we legit don't know anything about John Aryn personally i didnt even know Jamie and Cersei were siblings until they told us Robert saying I kill him every night who??? Rhaegar everyone forgto about him till season 7 Robert and Ned talking about his Rebellion without saying any important thing exept Bessy

I also agree with that dialogues are weaker than GOT and they have more focused on filming than writing. Ireally miss Tywin writing a letter while ignoring his chilren and conversations of Baelish and varys

I love what you said about Otto. I remember reading the history book George wrote and Otto was hands down my favorite character. Even with the BTS that came out before the shows release. And before it showed the actors name and who they were playing. I was like that has to be Otto. The littlefinger and tywin comparison is great too.

The end part where Considine tells the family secret about dream of A song of Ice and Fire was a bad move. They should have kept this series from s8. Unless they plan something big, like in Snow show. Otherwise , quite good characters, not as memorable and audience-friendly as Jon and Tyrion, Ned and Arya. The rest is pretty on top, since it's fucking HBO. I guess, at the end of s1 we can make up our minds whether this show can fill the void in our hearts after gargantuan fuckup of an ending.

Respectfully, I think everything you said was perfectly on point until you brought up the birth scene. As someone who hasn't read the books and not watched all of GoT, it did at times become difficult to know who was who. I think rewatching it would let me find out better though, and I don't mind being thrown right into the atmosphere. Additionally, Daemon has some interesting scenes with the king, but aside from that is coming off pretty strong to me as a villain. I'd like to see more of his personal development come through to make up for the gold cloak situation. I understand that it has a different feeling for everyone, but as a woman, there are very few horrors greater than what was displayed in this scene. There is absolutely not a singular spark of feeling, anywhere in me, for the king now. Nothing. Nothing he says about his mourning matters. He doesn't deserve to mourn. No feeling he displays relevant to them matters. He betrayed his wife in one of the most horrific and vulnerable spaces you ever could. His entire development is gone for me now. She was coherent, speaking to him. She wasn't dying, or flailing, or anything like that. By all means, there was no reason to LITERALLY MURDER her. He was impossibly selfish and deserved to lose them for it. She wanted to live, clearly. They could have done away with the traumaporn aspect by having him speak to a dazed queen who wanted desperately for him to save their child. Unfortunately, they didn't. I don't have WORDS to express the brutality of it. It doesn't matter what he does after this because he can never ever be seen as anything other than one of the vilest men who would betray his loving wife at a time when she needs him and that protection most. Her scene with Rhaenyra rings in my mind as a reminder of historic horror. This is what people think we are for. We are not people to them. We are only birthing machines. If that is what this was meant to carry, it did so excellently, and it certainly SEEMS to convey some of that message! The scene itself and the acting and everything is WONDERFUL, but it looks like they somehow still expected us to... what? feel bad for him? In some of the interviews they discussed him being a good man but a bad king, but it isn't ever possible for him to be a "good man" now. I just don't think they realized the actual horror of what he did, and somehow that is worse than the character doing it. That they could write it and think it ever possible to look beyond again. This is a very long comment but I'm interested in seeing if anyone else feels this way... like. It's simply not possible to move him beyond this for me.

I too am a woman, and I feel the same way. The Queen died in a horrible way, sacrificed to a political need for a male heir. It was a monstrous action on the King's part, and if I were his daughter I would hate him with all my heart.

I totally agree. He is unforgivable, his grief meaningless. It hurts him because he ordered the murder of his wife. The writers have said his punishment is coming for this choice. Aemma could have been saved, the baby sacrificed and removed from her. If not that, as he wants the heir, there are methods to turn the baby internally in breech, medieval methods, that midwives knew. Even talking to his wife, telling her what she has to do for the babys life and letting her accept it would have been better. Offering her a large dose of poppy milk and operating once she fell asleep could have been tried. Anything but cold blooded, restrained murder. He is a murderer, and I look forward to his punishment. It was an unbearable scene to watch for any woman. It may be a fictional example but my soul weeps for the female ancestors who came before us. Thank you for your comment amongst a sea of willing ignorance.

This is harder to write because there aren't any particular scenes from the ASOIAF books to draw dialogue and setting from, only facts and relationships so this show has to be more creative and already it shows that it's good.

I will respectfully have to disagree with most..1, the dialogues are like gold to me (comparing to season 5-7), and again it's only ep1, most of the quotable GOT lines comes later in the show anyway. 2.It doesn't seem like they are establishing Daemon as a villain to me, he just looks like an arrogant prince with a good heart, Otto looks more sinister lol, and both of them are cool and smart. 3. Why do they have to establish all the side characters that fast? Even in GOT season 1 it took me several episodes to be fully clear about what houses and what positions people are.

Seeing the tournament I immediately looked for Roberts big belly and grey, brown hair. Damn ... I felt what they are trying to do. The best was the intro in Harenhall hearing Ramin's music again. The prophecy ruined it a little bit for me ... But the first episode gets a 6,5/10. I agree with the text and storytelling Voice but I guess they didn't found a way to explain the current situation in Westeros any better. I myself was very pleased to see that the conflict of this season becomes VERY clear at the end of this episode. I am a book reader and I am very eager to see what they are going to do 🎉
