As someone who experienced this type of thing as a minor (my Bible study leader) the trauma is lifelong working out bc it’s more than bodily boundaries-it goes to relationship with God, marital struggles that unfold bc of this trauma, the church, pastors. Etc. And we are left alone while people continue to try and figure out how to help the one who wronged us OR heal the church…while we grieve year after year feeling abandoned thru no fault of our own. I never did bc trauma kept me in freeze mode…30 yrs later I was ready to say “hey, that was wrong.” Tho painful, It’s truth that could set all involved free.

Im grateful you spoke out but I’m also very grateful for the social media storm because people are tired of Ravi Zacharias, Hillsong, Willowcreek, Todd Bentley, Paul Cain and Bob Jones abuses! There are still several rape charges happening every year at Bob Jones University because nothing was done about Bob Jones and that behavior seems alright there. I grew up in the 80’s with Jimmy Swaggert and Jim Baker scandals, I saw beloved children friends getting physically abused and I don’t mean spanking, I mean parents physically pushing kids against wooden headboards because we were giggling at a slumber party. A prophet guy was molesting his own son but the pastor said nothing because he was sleeping with the secretary. I told my parents but no one believed them because multiple adults were having affairs with other adults. My brother saw the hypocrisy and never followed Christ again. No more, people are speaking up!!!

Thanks for your analysis. We need to call adultery adultery instead of using lesser terms for it. Adultery is disqualifying for serving in ministry, but it certainly doesn't disqualify a person from moving to a secular career. That's probably what MB should have done instead of living a double life while being in church leadership. I wish him well, but there are multiple women according to the advocate group.

It's predatory when a person of authority and leadership takes advantage of a much younger, ignorant follower. The imbalance of power makes it abusive , As that's how it started, it's a foundational, systemic and toxic system throughout. Addditional comes the fact that this is a huge financial congolomerate which empowers it's owners, Corps, LLC's, DBA and it's signatories. They will always hang together as there is a huge business and multimillion profit from this enterprise. Back to home groups and home churches. This is utterly corrupt.

I have seen this in a church with teen girl and women. No one can say anything about it if you do you are told to be quiet and it’s not true or they find some way to blame you. This hurts many people and they stop going to church or have anything to do with it. Turning a blind eye is not the answer!

Let's keep in mind the context for 1 Tim 5:19. " Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses." Timothy is in training for his Apostleship. Paul had him appointing elders, enforcing church discipline on erring elders, and teaching sound doctrine, etc. Historically some sources (Catholic) call Timothy a Bishop (a word not found in the NIV) but in fact he functioned as an Apostle. Jump forward to today and we have the American Protestant church run by pastors with nobody to hold them accountable except by the Pastor's (often) hand-picked board of elders. Functionally most churches place the responsibilities of Apostle and Prophet (Eph 4:11) on the shoulders of the Pastor. No wonder Pastors burn out. No wonder Pastors go astray. Authoritarianism creeps into the pulpit because absolute power corrupts absolutely. Don't expect a scriptural result after ignoring scripture.

I don't see a controlled burn. This is likely the end of ihopkc. The leadership team had the opportunity for a controlled burn, but their actions to initially cover up the allegations, then hire a PR firm to protect the brand have pretty much sealed their fate. Folks, we cannot forget how deeply Jesus is committed to providing justice to the vulnerable. Nowhere in ihopkc's or Mike's responses have I seen that prioritized. On the night I first heard of the allegations I received a dream about this whole scandal. God pointed me to Psalm 45 in that dream. Read it and reflect on how God cares about justice/righteousness. It's not optional. The only thing worse than abusing the most vulnerable in the church is then to cover it up & obfuscate, thus defrauding the poor of justice. "You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions." Ps 45.7

We ALL have blind spots. We ALL have those secret lust we dont want anyone to find out about. Not talking sexual only either. This is what i love about the word of God and about God. He always shows us the Godly part of anyone in the word of God, such as moses or david or anyone. But then he shows us their blind spots. Their secret sins or lust they hope no one finds out about. I hate to hear all of this about IHOP, but i know Christ will have a spotless Bride, and hes dealing with his Bride now. We must all examine ourselves, confess our sins one to another S the word says. But be wise who you do confess too. I do believe mike will get this right, and come forth with more of everything good from the Father and spirit and do more and have more good impact than in his first 40 yrs in ministery.
