I have heard that a lot of terrible dictators of the past have been charming people on a personal basis. You can say the same thing about most politicians, but I especially heard this about Charles Laurent of Liberia, if I'm not mistaken.

Was Chase right? I don't know. See, the worst thing about evil people is how they can turn you into them. Dibala was a murderer. Now so is Chase. It's almost like evil is a virus, capable of spreading from person to person. Yeah, Chase thought he was a good guy doing the right thing. Then again, so did Dibala.

You, specifically you, have to make a determination for yourself about which ends are actually good, and which are bad. For me, saying "You're replacing 1 murderer (Dibala) with another (Chase)" isn't the right arithmetic. Instead, I'd say "You're replacing 2 million victims (An entire ethnic group), with 1 (Dibala)". Suddenly the equivalence doesn't seem quite so equal.

Rather than simply playing moral accountant and engaging in the dubious game of utilitarianism, I think it would be more accurate to say that what Chase did wasn’t actually wrong or murder at all. He gave Dibala what he deserved, as the man was a ruthless murderer, and defended the lives of millions of innocent people. It might be different if Dibala was a perfectly innocent man and murdering him might indirectly save the lives of many. This is more dubious. But no matter your ethical persuasion, Chase made the right call here.

Most, I might even be willing to say *all*, dicators are incredibly charismatic. So... it was actually a perfect casting.

This began a character arc for Chase that ran all the way through to Season 6, Episode 8, "Teamwork", then S6E17 "Lockdown" and then to S8,E12 "Chase". At the conclusion of "Chase" we see that he finally has reconciled with himself and embraced his path. He has been looking for an escape hatch and thought he found it in Moira, the postulant about to take her final vows with whom Chase falls in love and wants to run away with. After a cathartic moment with House, Chase sat down at the table in House's office, content with his place in the order of things. The nod between House and Chase affirms that both truly understand each other. The episode and the final moment in some ways recalls the tale of the Return of the Prodigal Son. Chase is forgiven for his straying and takes his seat (which was always waiting) at his "father's" table once again!

Chase was always House-lite; it took this for him to finally become who we was meant to be: House's replacement. If you're not sure, notice what happened to the other two; Cameron essentially replaced Wilson as the moral heart of the hospital, Chase replaced House as the medical heart of the hospital, and Foreman replaced Cuddy as the ethical heart of the hospital. Three core facets of medicine, embodied in two triads of colleagues, one old and one new.

Foreman is a more polished Cuddy, able to maximize House and the rest of the team but not have House walk all over him. Peter Blake wrote this episode, and Blake's favorite non-House character to write was Chase...largely because, as the only Catholic writer on a team full of Jews and atheists, he could relate to Chase, who was the only (lapsed) Catholic character on a show full of...well, Jews and atheists. 😉 Consequently, Blake wrote or co-wrote many of the very best Chase-centric episodes ("Cursed," "The Mistake," "Chase") and he particularly liked to address Chase's issues and struggles with his faith. (Even in a Blake-penned episode such as "Here Kitty," in which Chase had only two or three scenes, one of them was a rather moving and empathetic conversation with the patient about believing in things that science couldn't understand.) He was definitely the right writer for this episode -- an episode wherein Chase basically sells his soul -- and the scene you highlighted in particular.

I still remember, how deeply that scene hit me, back when I first watched it ... many years ago. If you have some trauma in your past, it's so easy, to manipulate you. This is exactly how abusers groom their victims and watching it makes my skin crawl.

Actually the punchline was Cameron's "you gotta be kidding me" stare at Chase at the end. 😄

@@irmaadams7780 I’d recommend watching it yourself. Essentially, Chase kills the dictator and disguises it as a medical accident. He purposefully fakes a blood record and gives the dictator treatment that kills the dictator.

It’s something that comes up a lot with her character. She likes to operate on the moral high ground, but only from a position where she herself doesn’t face the consequences of her choices. The writers are pretty consistent in showing this

You know the trolley problem? She's the kind of person who wouldn't push the lever, but would cry for the people who the trolley kills and say how if only someone could push the lever, and then if someone else actually does it (to kill one to save the many) she gets on this very high horse how she is better than them.

It is a real dilemma if you are a doctor. You vow to do no harm, but you can refuse to not treat someone or use the method they want to be treated ( unreliable drug or procedure). What Chase did broke his oath, and to some people that is playing god. However, Chase murdered one and saved many ( maybe, more likely there will be a power vacuum and more people will die). So, is Chase and murderer? Even if he is is it justifiable? You will get many answers from many people, but there are no right answer in this question.

Very few understand such a dilemma. Having to treat the most heinous of people, and save their lives. I imagine such a task can weigh on a person and how much restraint it would take not to give into taboo, yet understandable desires.

A doctor can legally refuse to treat someone, but once treatment begins. If they were treating them, they MUST act in that patients best interest.

You don't get power without some charisma. Most dictators garner followings through their words and are generally good to those close to them, unless those close to them do something they don't like. But you don't stay in power without being well liked by at least some people.

Dictators are bipolar at best, and Stalin for example was infamous for just straight executing people for doing their jobs too well because he was paranoid they would try to replace him.

In real life, that's exactly what would happen, 99 times out of a hundred. In this episode, however, "the moderates" took over (presumably, the same moderates in Dibala's own administration, whom he denounced for being too weak and too willing to do crazy, awful things like "sign treaties" and "negotiate." 🙄) Basically, Dibala was the very poisonous head of an otherwise fairly harmless snake.

Summarizing Far Cry plots in a nutshell.

It's important to note that Chase both prevented Dibala's assassination and then orchestrated his death on hospital bed. In doing so, Chase prevented Dibala from becoming a martyr whose violent death could be exploited by a would-be successor to fan the flames of anger, hate and vengeance, and instead, relegated Dibala to a death that left the image of weak, old, frail, sick man who succumbed to illness and disease...an image that no would-be successor could utilize. This left space for so called moderates to step up.
