Season 1 Episode 12 "Sports Medicine"
A severely broken arm reveals a bizarre case of bone loss and ends the comeback plans of major league pitcher Hank Wiggen (Scott Foley). House suspects Hank - with a history of drug abuse - is lying about using steroids, as his condition worsens. When Hank's kidneys start to fail, his wife offers to donate hers, but she will have to abort her early pregnancy, something Hank does not want. Eventually House finds out the wife suffers from loss of smell, indicating the pair have smoked cannabis which was grown on cadmium polluted soil. Meanwhile, Foreman dates a pharmaceutical representative and House goes to a monster truck rally with Cameron. This episode features a cameo appearance by the series' director and executive producer Bryan Singer.

@@murigrim There were times when I smoked 20 g a week. Paranoia was always present for me(even when like 1 cig), but for good reason. It's illegal to do it, and I didn't want to get caught. I've been smoking weed for the past 6 years now, never have been caught once. Also, paranoia varies from person to person. There are people who don't get paranoid even on extazy/bath salts/speed. Smoking too much pot indicates very apathetic feeling, you literally don't care about anything, and, yes, that's bad. Since your brain produces too much oxytocin, and after a time, this production que fries your brain. But then again, I smoke joints with tobacco, not pure weed from a bong. I don't really like the fact that I want to cough up my lungs when I smoke pure weed. When I smoke pure weed, I just roll a greenpeace.

While I still have a problem with certain things, and I really do love the smell of skunks, the lack of smoking an ounce a day has helped me tremendously. The problem I now have is my weight. I mean, it's scientific fact that weed has no physically addictive properties. Like the guy said it is however possible to have a psychological dependency. Any discomfort from quitting (and I add you need to smoke ALOT for it) is just the brain convincing itself essentially, kinda placebo. @@Kittennyanya Lol as if that's what you think withdrawls are. Withdrawls happen because your brain has developed a physical dependancy on the substance, meaning that heavily addicted users can die if they try to go cold turkey. He said they'd been having a lot of trouble conceiving (been trying for years), and regardless of the transplant, he still seemed to be dying of an unknown disease (the Addison's diagnosis was a guess, and an incorrect one at that, as we saw later). The odds of being able to conceive a second child post-transplant and before he died, even if the transplant worked, seemed low. Plus, it'd be quite a thing to think that you sacrificed your only chance at a child with the person you loved to save your own life. The genetic imperative often requires parents to sacrifice themselves for their children, because your kids are the ones carrying your genes forward into the future.

If the combination of symptoms was indicative of cadmium poisoning, then surely, the symptoms minus the lack of sense of smell would also suggest it.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. As they explained, cadmium's an environmental risk factor. If people sharing the environment aren't also sick, you have to assume that the underlying cause is something specific to the patient. "Suggest" is doing a lot of work here, I think. Symptoms for many ailments vary case-by-case, and many are shared by many different illnesses. It's a lot more about playing the odds than it is about noting that symptoms X, Y, and Z mean disease A. At least, that's true for House, as the only patients he gets are the ones who have baffled all the other doctors they've seen.
