One of my favorite lines out of an old Judge Judy episode....when she was snapping at some girl who caused a car wreck was....."You didn't have an accident. You had an ON PURPOSE!"

Very few collisions are accidental. The vast majority are caused by people deliberately doing what they shouldn't or not doing what they should. Unfortunately, most drivers labour under the misapprehension that they're very good drivers and just deny or ignore any attempts to educate them otherwise. It tends to be that the drivers that live into advanced age are not those that don't think "it'll never happen to me" but those who think "what will I do if it does happen to me." Which is exactly how police officers are taught to think...

In the second story.... The woman is driving on a narrow country road that's not divided. She's smoking and using her cell phone. The road is curvy. Yet she thinks it's safe to pace closely to the other vehicle. She switches the cigarette to the other hand, drops the cell phone right when the road curves which leads to her striking the vehicle she's pacing. The point ??? DON'T PACE ME DAMMIT. I'll drive either faster or slower to get away from other cars. Cars shouldn't drive in a group. SPACE OUT SOME and PAY ATTENTION.

Actually, and i know it sounds very light, but compared to some other sentencing I've seen of FULL MURDERS including hit and runs, this is actually a heavier sentence than some double-triple hit and run drunk driving murders are. Which, in my opinion, is not far enough. But point being is that all things considered how courts usually rule this, I expected no more than 4 years, so 7 years is actually an unusually long sentence for a pedestrian being hit who survived. Regardless, yeah, I do think he still deserved more time, at least 10-15 years. In my town not far away, a few years ago two people were struck and killed by a drunk driver. He got off with a slap on the wrist, basically only served maybe a few months. My gma knew the person who was killed and was livid about the sentencing being too lenient for a drunkard driver who ran over and killed two pedestrians. You should also look up the case of this rich kid whose court case was "affluenza" which excused him of killing 4 people and injuring at least 9 more people, and he had been driving 3 times over the legal alcohol limit and was high on weed and took valium, and when he was pulled over, he blamed the cops for ruining his night, not the fact he had killed 4 people and didn't seem even slightly concerned about anybody he hit. In the end, he served virtually no jail time and was literally only sentenced to probation - 0 jail time whatsoever. The only reason he got *Any* jail time 3 years later was because he violated his probation. This is the world where money buys you out of any crime - including killing 4 people and injuring 9 more, while you're intoxicated on an array of drugs and alcohol. if he was poor, he would've been sentenced very harshly, but because had money, he was able to convince the judge to only give him probation. I wouldn't be surprised if they were bribed.

In the hit and run story at the beginning -- would the driver have been in less trouble if he had stopped? Or more trouble due to his drinking? He supposedly drank one beer and I wonder would that raise blood alcohol enough for a DUI. I suspect he had more beers than that, maybe before going to the bar, since he ran off the main roadway, hit the guy, and didn't stop.
@IncandescentBooks1997

He probably wouldve been in less trouble, assuming he was not over the legal limit. He actively left the scene, which is an additional charge beyond hitting someone

would have been less. would have had to be a MASSIVE beer to be over the legal( at least in my area). and stopping, calling for help. maybe would have bought him some mercy as a mistake he made. instead, he left that poor guy to shattered on the side of the road. 7 years was still too lenient IMO. to pull from the movie Need for Speed, " he just left him there, that is what I cant forgive"

Not to reduce my admiration and appreciation for all that these skilled personnel do, but . . . right after the narrator makes the point that your chance of being in an injury wreck goes up four times with your cell phone use, the segment on the van rollover shows the wreck investigator . . . taking a cell call while he is driving, in fact breaking his grip on the wheel with both hands to open his flip phone. On top of the airbag, too, which could have broken both his hands if there was a solid impact then. Nice modeling, guys. My phone rings 4 times by default before vmail, almost always time to pull over in a safe spot. Wait till stopped in any case. Safer than driving in traffic, anyway. A CT cop told me that if they see me reaching for ANYTHING, that's distracted driving to them. That's pretty stern thinking but it could save lives. That statement made me think. I am now trying to implement that every cab task while driving other than hands on and eyes up needs extra attention to my primary driving responsibility since the workload just went up. Even if it's looking in a mirror. Practice, practice. I managed to miss a deer last week. That felt pretty good.

Miraculously a Dr, on his way home from Africa, is right there to save you. 4. Then high risk a-hole #2 comes along to finish what #1 failed to, & kills you & the hero Dr. What does it mean? Well, don't get paranoid, but it would appear there is a real life Final Destination battle between good & evil going on all around us all the time. Thankfully we don't pay much attn to it. What do ya do about it? Live your religion, obviously, because u never know when one of these walking catastrophes(careless a-holes) is driving next to you & your number's up.😨😈😇👿😂 .

I saw the episode again and just think even more that the punishment should correspond to the act at least as much! So the punishment in the first case should have been surgical total paralysis as a minimum !!! In the second case, the road could well have been blocked off with mines that blew the criminal off the road and into small pieces, he does not deserve more and if it had saved the lives of the innocent victims, it would have been the best possible result! Barriers that can be passed should not be allowed to exist so anything should be introduced, if not as drastic as mines then at least nail mats or anything else that is impossible to pass to kill innocent people!
