On a seemingly normal day, with perfect driving conditions and clear visibility, tragedy strikes a single mother and her young son. When a mobile home suddenly breaks in the middle of the road the mother reacts fast, stopping her car. However, the driver of the school bus driving behind doesn't react as fast, causing a horrific crash.

My great grandmother was hit by a 17 year old while she was crossing at a green pedestrian light. She was fit and healthy for her age at 96. Fortunately the young man stopped. Our family petitioned the courts here not to punish the boy further. He already has to live with the accident. She died instantly, he lost his licence for a time. Very sad for us, but I still think of the poor guy who did that. If he didn’t stop my feelings would have been different... do the right thing people, even when you make a mistake!

My friends were the victims of an attempted auto accident fraud. A woman had her nine year old son ride his bike into the front passenger side of cars that were stopped at a red light, and then fall down with the bike on top of him, pretending he’d been hit and injured. She’d then play the hysterical mother running out, “My baby! My baby!” Upon finding out he was not hurt, she’d offer to “not involve the police” for a sum of money. She actually got away with this five times before she picked the wrong white-haired couple in a nice car. She got 8-10 years on a variety of charges and lost custody of her son.

I had an elderly relative who was found at the corner of the street half in the street, half on the curb in downtown Phoenix. He hit his head, and had bruises down one side. To this day, we don’t know if it was a hit and run grazing when he tried to cross the street, he tripped and hit his head and side on the curb, or he had a mini stroke and fell down. No witnesses. Thankfully he had his wallet on him - his relatives were thousands of miles away. He survived but was never the same after and died within 2 years.

The hit & run to me was not as sinister as the staged accident. The staged accident should have been tried as a murder. In other states, if you kill someone while committing a felony, you get charged with first degree murder. Is insurance fraud a felony?

Well, I agree with the judge. It’s only a hit and run, like for the one that was staged deserves a long sentence. Killed a mother and a child, gosh and just for money? So yeah, hit and runs are usually not that unbelievable. It’s most likely they don’t see the person they hit and just drive off or, they realise they are a fault but are worried to get caught so drive off as well.

It happened to my husband and I, l was driving him in our Mercedes-Benz to hospital and a car came from behind at great speed. He then pulled in front of me and slammed his brakes on luckily I managed to slam my brakes on! Then he drove off like a bat out of hell. We both knew he'd deliberately tried to cause an accident. This was in England and it happens a lot in England.

Sadly whether it’s 5 or 50 years neither will serve as a deterrent for future criminals. Instead of politicians using incarceration to get elected they should instead focus on creating opportunities for people to get good paying jobs. Seriously, incarceration beyond a few years is just a waste of money and life. Only premeditated murder deserves long sentences.

My father hit an elderly lady one dark and rainy evening. She had dementia and had gotten on a random bus in Atlantic City. She lived in NYC but ended up walking down the middle of a state highway south of Philadelphia. Even though she was in the middle of the road my fathers insurance had to pay the lady’s family a good amount of money. I think around 100,000 dollars.

Well we where going 60-70 Nd and car pulls infront of us then decided we where too close and too fast so they slam on the breaks after maybe 30 seconds of driving infront of us with the same speed. I remember thinking “thank god we wherent in the Volvo” (he also had a Volvo that was full black and sometimes the hood would pop up and make the window pitch black)

I don't see why it would make a difference if the grandmother was standing, kneeling or lying down. It would still be hit and run murder. Since when are drivers not responsible for what they hit if it's sitting lower than the bumper? You're supposed to be paying attention to everything around you and especially what's on the road in front of you! There's no pass for hitting a person who might be kneeling or laid out on the road; especially in broad daylight! Dude got drunk, ran down someone's elderly mother, went about his business and then tried to hide it. On top of that he lied to his gf about what he hit and asked her to go get the bumper so he himself wouldn't get caught removing it from tbe scene. That's an evil human being right there.

I really dislike the term “elderly”. It suggests weakness, vulnerability, pity, and loss of faculties.

What is wrong with the justice system, it has become a real joke, he killed a woman in a hit and run and got 5 years. Sick.

In the UK if you hit a car from behind, you are deemed responsible, for driving too close. Thereby not leaving enough breaking distance. If the coach driver had left enough room between her and the car ahead the woman and child would not have burnt to death.
