The great thing about art is that...art inspires art. Which then goes to inspire other art that might have been influences by the other art. You still following me? I'm talking about how Anime influences western cartoons such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teen Titans, The Boondocks, so so many more that i would literally run out space if I typed them all here.

@@SwordGuy17 The term might be making a comeback, but LOOOONG ago (like, the 1970's and '80's) before the term 'anime' was in the common lexicon, you'd hear it a lot. Once again the highest video production quality of anime/Japanese/asian culture om youtube and probably in all media. I just have one thing that I think would make the videos better. In your video it would be nice to have dates on all the different media being talked about. It would make it easier to follow if dates of realise was present next to name of the spoken media. I'm my mind it is hard to follow the narrative if it's only spoken as "this was released before that" with no written year connected to what ever is talked about. Anyway great stuff Crunchyroll! Love the vids, keep this stuff coming 🙂

Personally? 1) Onyx Equinox was close to flawless. 2) Hozuki's Coolheadedness was fantastic, even to a newb like me, only peripherally aware of Japanese and Asian afterlife tropes. 3) House of Five Leaves is flawless. 4) Gintama can't be exceeded. It gives the phrase "Over the Top" real meaning. 5) Hyouge Mono is an archetype of period piece animation. Incredible, the more so as one studies the history.

To be fair: While I definitely think the look, vibe, & animation style of the 90's X-Men cartoon was influenced by early anime the more plot-focused, "anime-esque" storyline was something Chris Clairemont had started doing with X-Men comics back in the 70's. According to him, he saw it as daytime TV soap operas only with superhumans.

@@AniGamerNX it was less that it was violent and more that Korra was appealing to an older age range than they wanted/expected. Since Nick was primarily focused on advertising to younger audiences, the decision was made to move it to inconvenient time slots and eventually online only since they already ordered S3 and 4 and couldn’t justify cancelling it (and didn’t want to upset the creators since their work had won them several prestigious awards). It’s unfortunate because I think if Nick had made an attempt to appeal to teens and older with an adult swim style nighttime block it could have been really successful. Thankfully the series’ popularity on Netflix has had Paramount give Bryke their own studio to make things so maybe it could become even bigger.

There needs to be a name for this new hybrid style made by Westerners who grew up watching anime. You can’t call it “anime” without someone freaking out cause it’s not from Japan, but “cartoon” doesn’t fully describe shows like Castlevania, Avatar, or even She-RA well enough to me. Yeah they’re cartoons as far as medium but finding a word to distinguish these hybrid “cartoons” with pretty adult philosophical themes from stereotypical cartoons would be cool.
@philo2189
@philo2189 3 жыл бұрын
But they are cartoons lol it's not freaking out words have meanings and anime means a Japanese animation out of Japan. It's easy in the western world just call it cartoons in places like the Philippines with Trese just call it a philipino animation not hard.
@RoseEyed
@RoseEyed 3 жыл бұрын
@@philo2189 yes words have meanings. That’s my point. Cartoon is too broad a word. It’s reductive. Technically anime is ALSO a cartoon but we don’t call it that to highlight the country of origin (or more realistically) the style it’s done in. I can’t speak for you but I care more about a style and its tropes than JUST the country of origin. Like yeah they’re cartoons, but when I think of cartoons I think of Family Guy or Ducktales. Not Castlevania or Avatar. I want a more specific word to distinguish them from each other and highlight the non-western influences of these new shows. Stylistically the ones I mentioned have more in common with anime than a stereotypical American cartoon, even if their countries of origin differ. Wouldn’t hurt to find a way to acknowledge that.
@philo2189
@philo2189 3 жыл бұрын
@@RoseEyed bro you know you're wrong right? Cartoon is not too broad of a word that's literally what we call animated shows in America. And yes anime does translate to cartoon but anime is also a word that is only reserved for the Japanese which is their style of animation and their style of animation is called anime they're version of comic books is called Mangaka or manga it's not that serious bro just bc they take tropes from anime doesn't mean you have to think so hard about it and have a complete aneurysm just call it what it is a cartoon family guy is a cartoon avatar is a cartoon it's not too broad of a term that's the literally word for these shows stop thinking so much about it and call it how it is or you're going to pop brain cells for no reason

If you asked me 'why can't anime just be its own thing?' I would say 'at this point, *IS* it really its own thing anymore?' At this point the line between American and Japanese animation has blurred to the point that you almost can't tell them apart anymore. Even Disney has been influenced by anime since the 80's. If you look at Cinderella and Aurora in their original films they look more like something from the Fleischer cartoons but Jasmine and Belle are closer to an anime character and then Elsa and Moana have went even further.

The classification of anime gets even more muddied when there are western made shows like Korra that need big help from japanese studio like Pierott. Or even the Shelter music video, which was created by a western man but made at A1-pictures. At this point, anime has become more of a style than just shows from Japan.
@MrInuhanyou123
@MrInuhanyou123 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Thundercats the original one was animated fully in Japan in anime style. But it's writers were American and people just called it a cartoon. I feel like anime isn't just an art style but a way of thinking expressed in media. Japanese ideas culture and mindset brings that kind of diversity to the table like American cartoons do which is why they are so appealing to begin with. When some of their ideas fuse togethe is great but I feel it important to not diminish the creative forces importance
@goldmemberpb
@goldmemberpb 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrInuhanyou123 Then, thundercats would just be called an anime or anime styled cartoon. Back then, thundercats was seen as an American shows. So, people just called it a cartoon. If we go by your definition of what anime is, then something like Steven Universe or Avatar is an anime. You could say that now, the style of a show on top of how it presents its themes and where it was mainly created determines its classification.
@MrInuhanyou123
@MrInuhanyou123 3 жыл бұрын
@@goldmemberpb I don't get your argument. You say if we go by my definition Steven universe or avatar is anime but I just said by definition of anime is series written and fully created by japanese for that market because anime is not an artstyle but a creative mindset. So Steven universe and avatar would not be apart of that definition The new Castlevania series was done by the studio who did Steven universe in Texas and it imitates the anime style based on the original illustrations but the series would be 100% different if created by japanese. That is what separates anime from anime inspired. Rather than the surface level aspects it's what the creative teams bring to project. Panty and stocking heavily is inspired by western cartoons style like invader Zim, but it is definitely not considered a cartoon because no cartoon would be structured in such a way.

There's something special about Japanese original anime, but I think that western series which are done in an Eastern style are anime in my view. A style and an art have an origin, but if they're good they'll eventually be practiced outside of their country of origin. There is pizza made in the United States, it's a little different than the original Italian pizza, but we wouldn't sit around saying "Yeah it looks and tastes like pizza, but it wasn't made it Italy so I'll call it.... western dough and sauce."

Actually, factually speaking, Walt Disney, Betty Boop, Popeye, and several others, influenced all of Japanese cartoons and animation. So the West in reality influenced itself. Japanese comic books and Anime (Anime, I.e. Animation, as it's known in Japan which refers to everything animated like Minions and Disney films, for example, not just animation originating from there) in Japan did not get its iconic eyes from Japan itself, those directly from the things I listed, especially Walt Disney's work. Only today has Japanese animation and comic book art turned into in a way, its own art style. Not in a way that's unique but in a way that it can have its own little identity although still being what it has always been since its key influences which is Disney and everything else I listed. It's why Disney world in Japan isn't necessarily Japanese. It's just Disney.

Even the design of Craig McCracken's The Powerpuff Girls from 1998 (and their rebooted counterparts from 2016) are influenced by the simple design of Sanrio's Hello Kitty anime.

Has anyone read or seen "Invincible" ? I think there are some one punch man vibes there.
@WildBillCox13
@WildBillCox13 3 жыл бұрын
Invincible is a good effort, with adult situations and a really complex backstory. The hard part is its reliance on a few basic conflicts and its "unkillable" central figure. The Oedipal tension is the overriding meme. The vulnerability of side characters is powerful, but, like with war, is quickly buried in the plot breadth, complexity, and pace.
