I'm sure I'll receive backlash for this, but I've seen a lot of misconceptions about how money plays into BookTube, so I thought I'd make a video clarifying some things based off of my experiences. :)

Super informative, as always! I personally don't mind sponsored videos at all (as long as they clearly state it's sponsored). Especially hauls, because the person can't really give their opinion if they haven't read it yet so what is there to lie about? I've seen BookTubers haul a book they wouldn't normally pick up because they were paid to, and that was the first time I'd ever heard of it and I ended up LOVING it. It is nice to be exposed to things outside of everyone's normal comfort zone sometimes.

EXACTLY hauls are the most commonly sponsored videos, and it's literally impossible to lie about the majority of information they give you! i have been recommended SOOOO many great books from sponsorships that i may not have known about otherwise! they really are an asset to the community

I really didn't care too much about why you guys received money, not to be rude, I still find you guys such a lovely part of the youtube community and I support the ones I love however I can, but I never made a big deal about it. You guys actually deserve all the deals, books, monetary compensation, etc. you get. I mean don't we all want to do what we love and love what we do? Isn't it awesome to make money off of something you simply love to do? Shouldn't we all work towards that and not tear down those who achieved it? I won't support creators if I don't like them/trust them or don't like what they stand for. I also like to make sure where my money is going, and if people are keeping me in the dark about that how can I support you? Thank you Emma for the video as it did clear up lots of things, I always thought of you as a great person for being so honest yet so nice.

I already do trust the BookTubers I'm subscribed to, so it's not a problem in my opinion, if they are sponsored by a publisher or not. BookTubers put so much effort into their videos, why shouldn't they get paid? Even if it's just a little bit? BookTubers painstakingly edit their video, a little reward is sometimes nice. Great video, Emma. This was really great! Thanks for the honesty.

I love this video so much. It is so nice to see someone being so honest and open about this topic. The fact that you would even make this video (despite the fact that so many other people don't) is why I love your channel so much ❤️ Tbh I don't care if someone is doing a sponsored video, some booktubers put so much work into their videos and if they make money through sponsorships from it, then cool. The only time it kind of bothers me is when I see a specific sponsorship/ book being shown in (what feel like) everyones book hauls or pictures on their instagram, but then I don't see one of them actually read the book. Thats when the sponsorships feels a little wrong to me.
@emmmabooks
@emmmabooks 7 жыл бұрын
awh thank you! that really means a lot to me hmm that's actually something i haven't thought about! i mean of course i know it's common in the community to haul books and not read them, but i never thought about how it looks with sponsorships! i guess it kind of comes down to the whole "would they have read this on their own argument" because there's no requirement to read it if it was just sent for a haul. such an interesting point! :)

I just love you! you approach topics that a lot of people neglect and that is so considerate of you. I personally think that Booktubers should actually get paid. They are the best part of youtube and the most influential. I hate when people complain about them getting paid it's like they just want to recieve and they don't want them to get anything in return! Getting paid is the least thing that Booktubers deserve after they take precious time of their day to share everything about books with us. And it's not like that's gonna affect anyone badly! .. Ok that was way too long LOL. I just wanted to express my opinion.

I've always never cared how much KZfaqrs make. I really appreciate your work and making videos is HARD. The time that it takes to film, edit, post, and do everything else for the video takes forever and you should be compensated. We don't pay for these videos but we still consume them regularly and expect them every week. Emma, This was incredibly informative and helpful. Having done some research on how to make money on any kind of KZfaq channel (not just booktube) I was familiar with some of the terminology and money-making avenues, but certainly not everything you discussed. A particularly helpful clarification was the word "sent" vs. "sponsored" as a clue to whether a publisher is monetarily compensating the booktuber, and it's good to know that publishers are clear in their contracts about their level of input---it seems like the truly see booktube as an asset and have no interest in exploiting reviewers in this still very new medium of videos, they care about cultivating a relationship with the booktube community and that's heartening. Best, Joe

thank you so much!!! yes, definitely knowing what to look for in verbal disclosure is a great help!! every publisher i've worked with is SUPER respectful of booktuber honesty, so if someone is actually lying in their videos, that's the booktuber's problem; not the person they are working for. i agree! i think of it 100% as an asset because i know there are a ton of books that came from sponsored videos that i am so happy to have read!

I've been blogging and BookTubing for over 2 years, and people always wonder how I can say that it's my job (it's really my side hustle) -- and wonder if I only do it for the money/free books. Thanks so much for making this Emma! It's not so much that I am bothered by booktubers making money (a lot of them spend so much time making great videos-editing, adding music, inserting texts/pictures-that it's great that they are able to make money) but the whole behind the scenes stuff with sponsorships and affiliate links were always confusing to me because no one really talks about it. But now that you made this video it really just clears the smoke and shows that it's not a big deal. I get that money is a personal matter and some people want to keep it private so I'm so glad that that you decided to make this video because I'm sure it wasn't easy for you.

You're always so professional, and you put so much effort into your videos, your research really shows through, I don't understand why people would give you backlash. But please know that I really really appreciate you letting viewers and smaller BookTubers behind the scenes and shedding light on topics that most people don't want to talk about! I really appreciate that you made this video, and put so much thought into it. It helps both viewers and other creators to understand how booktube works. I understand when you say that not receiving commission from affiliate codes or links means that you get nothing back, but this does still help your channel in other ways. You say that you're not getting anything out of it other than what they send you, but you have to think about it from a business point of view. Even if you don't get that commission, the company sees the kind of traffic you can bring to them, and responds accordingly. If you bring a lot of traffic, they're more likely to work with you in the future. If it's a larger/more popular company, and they give you products to use/review/show on your channel, this has the potential (if you do use them) to bring more people to your channel because views are interested in those products, giving you higher visibility for even larger companies that may want to initiate a sponsorship with you. Of course, this depends on the product/source and their appeal, as well as the people who would subscribe because of seeing said content-- which could be more or less. I also think it's fine that booktubers take on sponsorships. If a publisher reaches out to them, that's awesome! It helps me as a viewer because I get to know all the pertinent information, and I get to hear what that booktuber has to say about it. It's perfectly fine to me, as long as it's specified when it's a sponsorship. The only thing that bothers me is when publishers send out ARCs to a ton or people (booktubers and others) without asking whether the booktuber intends to read it or not. Many times I see booktubers haul ARCs and then never actually read them, or have no interest in reading them, or only read them long after the release (negating the purpose of the ARC). Now, I do think giving ARCs to booktubers is a good idea, and should continue, but I think it should be something more along the lines of the publisher giving an ARC if the booktuber wants it, with the stipulation that it should (not necessarily has to) be read before the release date, or perhaps if they don't want to read it, if they'll host a giveaway for the ARC. If that makes sense. There's probably some behind the scenes stuff that I don't know that makes all this null...

Great video! I can usually tell by the tone of other videos if the person is honest with a book review( especially if it is a paid review) I have favorite authors so I ONLY go to KZfaq when I am unsure about a title and then I check a few reviews out

I just had a dejavu with a section of your video! O.o it was strange. Anyway, I can't believe this is an issue? I mean, if a company wants to pay a booktuber for promoting a book than that's there decision and I mean... that's how these things work. Not only for booktubers but all big channels about anything get paid by companies to have their products promoted. It's something so normal that until your video I had no idea booktubers were frowned upon for it. Still, super informative. I loved this vid (and I love your shelf). I do think that if you promote something that a company asked you to, you should get paid for it. (again, that''s how it works!) Awesome channel! =)

I really appreciate you making this video, Emma! I had no idea that people thought or speculated about how much money booktubers make. I think its great that you did this video. Im very much the same when it comes to discussing topics on my channel because its important we see this. That way it gets any confusion out of the way. And honestly i dont see an issue with bigger booktubers getting sponsored. Its how the community grows because that in turn helps the booktuber buy books and to discuss them and continue to put out content. But your awesome and i love it when you talk about things along this line because you help booktubers like myself who are still small and dont understand how it fully works! Love your videos 🤗🤗🤗

Great video as always and very informative and eloquent! I think it's totally okay for any creator to be able to make money of their content, and I'm personally totally okay with any kind of sponsorship as l trust the booktubers I watch that they'll be honest, which I truly believe at least most of them are! Also I personally don't care if somebody gets "rich" or if they only get a dollar but I think it's ridiculous how some people seem to think that booktubers get crazy rich from sponsorships etc. I mean that's just not how it works, sure there is money involved but not ten thousands of dollars and if you're on booktube for the sole purpose of money then please leave, we don't want you here :/ Loved this video, great topic as always and girl you SLAYIN!!

Thank you for making this video Emmma! This was very helpful for people who just started BookTube or are like me and want to start a channel. I really want to start up my own KZfaq channel soon not only talking about books but also talking and reviewing movies and tv shows. I'm not going to start up a channel because I want money or anything but it would be nice to be able to get paid to talk about or do things I love who doesn't want that. I have always wondered how BookTubers and KZfaqrs in general get paid so thanks for breaking it down. :)

I know this is an old video but, for some reason a lot of your videos are showing up in my recs today so why not comment! Very informative and for me when it comes to making any kind of money I always say...'never quit your day job' I have managed to bring home a small chunk of change from Google on an annual basis but, I believe that getting this adds to the motivation of video making because let's be realistic. You invest money into making your content and I feel there is nothing wrong with getting a little something back for your work is a positive thing.

This is really interesting! KZfaqrs should definitely make money on their videos if possible. I've never made a video, but I know there is a ton a work done to plan, execute, and edit a video. You should definitely have the option and ability to receive compensation in exchange. Thank you for all the information.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!! I've been pretty curious about this topic as a booktuber myself, not that it's a big deal to me. I think if booktubers are passionate about what they're doing then they definitely should be making money. But that also shouldn't be the sole motivator for them, like you said. That's not what I'm motivated by, I just like listening to cool people talk about books and talking about them myself. lol. I love your pure honesty and the fact that you called out these people with ridiculous theories. Like come on people, we're not in an episode of Pretty Little Liars here, there's no conspiracies. lol. Thank you so much for posting this video, I really appreciate watching and learning from you.
