Not if China has an exclusive foothold in the EU. De-industrialization is the source of the current crises in the EU. We need to invest in things that export globally.
@FabioCapela
@FabioCapela 6 ай бұрын
@@lucbloom The issue with this is that Europe can only block Chinese imports on its own shores; it has no power to block Chinese imports in third-party countries. Thus, Europe would still have to compete with China elsewhere in the world, but without the power to impose protectionist measures against them. To put it another way, if the EU's protectionist measures shelters its auto industry enough that it doesn't feel the pressing need to match and surpass the Chinese auto industry on EVs, it will be ceding the global EV market to China in an attempt to protect its local market. Protectionist measures against China's auto industry would also likely trigger a tit-for-tat response from China, locking EU automakers out of the very large and profitable Chinese car market; for comparison, the Chinese car market is roughly the size of the EU and US car markets added together. Losing the Chinese market, and being outcompeted in the rest of the world, would already be catastrophic for European automakers and the EU economy. What Europe needs is an effective industrial policy with big investments in developing and improving EV tech together with an even tighter schedule for replacing all ICE sales with EVs. If Europe doesn't do that, it will likely be driven out of most of the global market by cheaper (and potentially even better) Chinese EVs. And time is running out for doing this. Of course, Europe also has one heck of a disadvantage in that energy prices in Europe have spiked because of the lagging transition to renewables coupled with it losing access to cheap Russia natural gas, whereas energy prices in China are falling due to it having access to the cheapest photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, and batteries in the world and it installing more solar per year than the rest of the world added together. If Europe can't bring down its energy costs then deindustrialization will happen in all energy-intensive industries regardless of whatever else Europe tries.

"protectionism" ? Sorry, I don't see it in everyday live. Almost every electronic device available is made in China ... Altough I see a bunch of minimum standards in the EU that must be fullfilled. If you want to sell something in the EU, then have to guarantee the CE standards and put your neck on the line for issues.
@TheHongbu

@@benjaminmeusburger4254 That's because those electronic devices contain a large number of Western semiconductor parts, and most of the profits from selling these electronic devices have been taken away by the West. When China prepared to produce its own semiconductor parts, the United States imposed sanctions on China. But now that China's electric cars are entirely made up of China's own parts, the West cannot impose sanctions, so the West begins to tell stories of unfair trade.

@@hi4806 This actually matters less with EVs than with ICE cars due to how simpler EVs are. It's much easier to produce both right-handed and left-handed EVs in the same factory, with a lower number of different parts between them, than it's to build both versions of ICE cars in the same factory.

Since China's automobile factories are newly built, they have a better degree of automation than those in Germany. One significant point you neglected in your video is that when China allowed Tesla to set up manufacturing there, Tesla raised the quality of Chinese suppliers to meet their specifications and this in turn flowed into Chinese manufacturers. It is no accident their quality and tech improved after Tesla set up in Shanghai. Also as you said a lot of media just compare raw sales numbers between BYD and Tesla but miss the real story, which is these companies taking market share from legacy auto. Not at all. As has already been pointed out, it was about sales on the US market. And even if you disregard that, the statement was both true at the time, as well as Tesla has not really been slacking or taken competition lightly at all. Tesla is, in fact, the only Western company who has taken EVs seriously. So even if you interpret the statement in its most unfavourable reading, it doesn't mean anything.

And i want to switch to electric (for acceleration and low center of gravity not economical reasons) and i am a huge tesla fan and i have money yet if i import one i will have absolutely no after sale service. Meanwhile Chinese car companies are setting up shop here left and right and there are dozens of new EV models in the market with after sale service with a wide price range especially in the last 12 months. As for European Cars the price points are just too much for what they are offering now. The G60 530i sells here for $110,000 which is twice what the Nio Et7 sells here for. + the G60 is the first 5 series i didn’t get excited about, it didn’t do as big of a jump as previous models. Which made me thinking to go for something like a Nio or BYD, which i wouldn’t have done 3 years ago. I think Chinese carmakers picked the right time to aggressively expand in time when American car makers are focusing inward and euro car makers are lazy.

Plus, look at the European car manufacturers who are lagging behind its American and Asian competitors, but only in quality, because price remains ridiculously high. If European leaders are dumb enough to outsource almost everything to Asia, they should face the consequences. Hybrids actually have a much higher fire risk than either pure electric or pure ICE cars - and as BYD (and China) draws closer to a fully electric future, those fires will become rarer (as pure electric vehicles suffer from less fires than ICE cars). Incidentally, the LFP chemistry that BYD uses in its cheaper batteries is much less prone to catching fire than regular Lithium batteries, and the Sodium chemistry that is poised to take over the lower priced segment is even safer. I have also heard that Chinese domestic consumption of EV's has declined significantly and the only markets able to absorb this excess production is the EU and Russia. The EU is likely to respond with trade restrictions that will cut BYU sales.

But then China would just use trade restrictions back. In 2021 China represented 12% of german car exports (and substantially larger in terms of profit margins), hence why the germans have been resistant to french plans. On top of which theres now an annoying little island (UK) off their shores which the germans call treasure island because they get such good profit margins there, which the Chinese could choose to compete much heavier in with the UK unlikely to care seeing as they don't really compete in the same segments.

BYD Dolphin became the best selling EV here in Brazil since it started selling here. The same is happening in many places around the world, wherever the Chinese - and, in particular, BYD, as the largest Chinese car maker - sets shop in a country without strong local car makers, they not only displace most EV sales from traditional auto-makers, they also force the traditional automakers to cut their prices (some competing EVs dropped their prices by more than 20% here in Brazil when BYD started selling the Dolphin) and cause the EV market to grow faster (because, you know, lower prices). Chinese car makers can grow their global reach, at the expense of traditional car makers, even if they are locked out of the EU and the US. Also, EV sales in China are still growing strongly. Plugin vehicles are as of last November (the last month for which data is available) 42% of all new car sales, of which 27% are pure EVs and 15% are plugin hybrids. In fact, more than half of all EVs sold in the world are sold inside China - which allows the largest Chinese car makers to reach economies of scale in EVs, just from sales in their home market, that outside China only Tesla can match.

@@STEP107 You're ignoring the fact that Tesla also benefitted from billions of dollars in subsidies and tax breaks. It's also grossly overvalued given that it's seen as a tech company than a car manufacturer just because it led the way in the rise of electric cars despite them producing much fewer stuff than say, Toyota. The fact that other firms are catching up means their margins should get tighter as the competition ramps up. Add the fact that he's also engaged in useless bs distractions like the Cybertruck and that isn't optimal.

BYD EVs have better dollar-for-dollar value, better designs, comparable performance with better ride quality. I've tried Model 3 and Model Y, both rides are harsh asF, and interiors are very plasticky. Most people are buying Tesla because of Elon Musk (a sort of personification of Tony Stark), and the name "Tesla"; not really because they're great EVs. Plus their "minimalist" design is really just Woke Miennial nonsense that most people aren't fans of.
