He met her at Cirith Ungol, and she considered him being not food. Then Gollum came up with the (flawed) idea that she should eat hobbits but not the one ring. Considering the history with her ancestor Ungoliant eating magical jewels, I think this idea had a huge hole in it, and that Shelob would not hesitate eating magic rings.

Can you exlain why the hobbits seem to he resistant to the rings temptation whilst good hearted men like boromir were tempted and succumbed to the pressure?
@jacobgarcia7918
@jacobgarcia7918 7 ай бұрын
It's because the hobbits (particularly Shire hobbits) do not have a culture of ambition. There is simply very little that they desire or know about. Boromir, although good, had a lot of ambition, especially since it was his duty to protect his people from Sauron. Most men live in places surrounded by threats. Elves are tempted because they know a lot. The more you know, the more you desire.

@@brodyestes2376 supernatural allure yes, but it still appeals to the individual heart. It is just a very tempting artifact. Tolkien was a devout Catholic and Catholic concepts are all over the books. In Catholicism, no one can be forced to sin and all have the ability to resist temptation.

Great question. My personal opinion in the book (maybe unpopular 🤨? ) the ring is different from the film. Honestly, most people just are not obsessed with it in the same way as the film. Sam, Faramir, Aragorn, Glorfindel, Tommy B, Elrond... all people who come in contact with the Ring and honestly just don't care too much. - Faramir says if he saw it on the side of the road, he still wouldn't pick it up. - Elrond put the chain on it while Frodo was in a coma - so he picked it up - but by all accounts not tempted. The only people who become seriously tempted are either A) folks with LOTS of exposure to it (months/years/etc) or B) folks that desire to rule/control (Sman, Lady G). Most regular characters though... not a problem. It would destroy them, they know it, and they don't want it. In my read, the book just isn't really about the ring too much. It's SAURON that is the threat - and the ring is just a means to an end. In the films, Sauron doesn't really appear in the movies so instead it's kinda the RING that's the threat. I like both versions, but to me they are very different. What do you think?

Let me give you two answers: * Movie Ring: has a mind, personality, whispers sometimes, seems to have agency, etc . * Book Ring: IMHO, none of those. It never "does" anything or speaks of whatever. To me it is pulled towards it's natural place (with Sauron) but not by it's own agency.... just by nature. Like gravity or magnetism maybe. Just as hot air rises, the ring is attracted to the rest of it's own spirit. What do you think?

@@thegreyhavens167 Thank you for your answers! I agree, the ring being drawn back by whatever force makes way more sense-- mostly because he put like all of his power in it and that connection has to be strong. Also, the ring has a lot of power but if it had as much agency then either Gollum (or even those before) would have been controlled back to Sauron way sooner or the ring doesn't want to get back to Sauron, which doesn't make much sense because isn't it more powerful with Sauron? Why would he make a ring that would want to escape him and rule by itself? What is the power that it actually holds? I didn't get the sense that it had gained some kind of consciousness.. sorry that's a lot of questions, I'm just getting into the series and there's so much and it's so fun to learn and talk about it

Yeah thats not Sauron. Pretty sure he was never a man in his fair form as Annatar.

@thegreyhavens167 6 ай бұрын
Let me give you two polite challenges: 🤔 Tolkien never said Annatar was elvish.... he just said he had a fair form. And Gandalf and Saruman are clothed in human form, not elf... so there is a precedent there. So I'm not saying he was def a man, but instead wondering why you are "pretty sure he was never a man"? 😅 Most importantly... if you dont find that super over dramatic Halbrand stare directly into the camera SUPER HILARIOUS, then we just dont have the same sense of humor. 🤣🤣 I lmao every time I see it 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's SOOOO funny! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Question: if pre ring smeagol is a hobbit then why did him and deagol start competing for the title of gollum when Bilbo had the ring for several years, and then frodo. But while in the shire neither frodo, or anyone else was tempted to steal the ring. Why are hobbits so flipping resilient. And if smeagol and deagol are Hobbits why did the demonic one ring take over them both so quickly? Another question. What would happen if deagol killed smeagol... I meen it takes five seconds for the ring to take over the two but im the lord of the rings. 60 years later and bilbo can still say no to the ring... Whats going on?!

Realistically, we have to separate The Hobbit from The Lord of the Rings. At the time of it’s writing, Tolkien had not yet conceived the idea of the ring being malevolent. It was just a magic ring that made the wearer invisible, nothing more. This served as a convenient plot device to help Bilbo fulfill his role as The Burglar as successfully overcame situations with spiders, trolls, elves, a dragon, and even five armies fighting each other. But, the ring never oppressed him, weighed him down, or tried to darken his soul. In the first edition of The Hobbit, Tolkien wrote Gollum just handing the ring to Bilbo because he acknowledged Bilbo as the rightful winner of the riddle game. Gollum then proceeds to show Bilbo the way out. But, years later, when Tolkien was pressed by his students at Cambridge to write more work about Middle Earth, he rewrote Gollum as a maniacal, obsessed creature who couldn’t bear to be parted from his “precious” and would even kill with wicked glee to re-obtain possession of it. And, thus, began the notion of The One Ring being malevolent and having a more sinister back story which Tolkien would go on later to write about in The Lord of the Rings.

Why did saruman not attack edoras while rohan was protecting helm's deep?
@thegreyhavens167
@thegreyhavens167 7 ай бұрын
That's a great question! Here is my personal read of things: - when Sman captured Merry and Pip, he thought he had essentially captured Frodo and Sam, he thought they had the ring - Merry and Pip escaped during a Rohan raid of the orcs, so he just assumed they were with the Rohirrim. - when Gandalf and Aragorn went to Edoras, that kinda proved to Sman that they were there to protect the ring So Sman didn't attach Helms Deep for military strategic reasons, but rather because he thought the Fellowship was at Helms Deep with the Ring and was after the ring. That's my read, but others could see it differently. What do you think?

@@thegreyhavens167i think that It was for another reason, at least in the books, Saruman lunches his definitive attack against Rohan when Theoden is convinced by Gandalf to fight, his troops defeat Erkebrand's forces at the Isen Fords but they are unable to kill them all and most Rohirrim manage to escape, then his troops notice that Theoden is very near with the 1000 men from Edoras and that he is retreating to Helm's Deep, at that point Saruman's army has to choose, they can ignore Theoden and his men, continue their invasion and Risk being attacked in the rear by 1000 elite cavalry, or they can go after him to Helm's Deep and try to kill him before the rest of Rohan has time to reorganize and come to help him, if they suceed they also behead the leadership of Rohan, both Theoden and Eomer would be dead and since Erkebrand is nowhere to be found that means that there wouldnt be anh Marshall in Rohan to lead the remaining troops. And in movie and book Edoras was empty, in the books the civilians left with Eowyn and went to Dunharrow

Not at all really. If Rings of Power is a 5/10 for lore-accuracy, Shadow of War would be like a 2.

I get that its the start of so many tropes. But LOTR really over does it on the "secretly the best ever" thing. Thats not an eagle, its a sentient race of super eagles. Thats not a spider its an ancient super spider. Thats not a wizard, its an ancient super demi god. Thats not a fire monster, its an ancient super something or other. We get it. Everything is ancient and better than it looks. Yawn
