I drove a 1996 Corolla for 300k miles. It still ran well when I saved up for a "new to me" car. I bought a Lexus IS350 with 120k miles for $7,500 precovid. Donated the Corolla to an organization and still see it around town. I spoke to the new owner and it's at 360k miles now. 😱

Just get a used Lexus from late 2000 / early 2010. They are so reliable that all you need to spend on it is just gas, insurance and regular maintenance like old change, tune up, etc, and not surprise costs of fixing any mechanical issues. My 08 GS 350 works wonder even till this day. Just get one above 100K miles, they will usually cost less then $10K because of the high-mileage-depreciates-value rule, but for a Lexus, high mileage is nothing if well kept. Bring a mechanic if you don't know what you are looking at or don't if you know what you are doing. If high mileage but everything works and selling for less then $10K, you should be good to go

Some people have to bite the bullet and get a car payment. It's then a matter of getting a car that is easy to maintain and reliable. Good point. It's a matter of luck honestly. You can take mechanic with you, test drive all you want, but you're just not gonna catch everything wrong with the car. If previous owner is an older person that didn't drive crazy and kept up with maintenance then 200k miles on Honda, Toyota is nothing. I recently checked out an 01 Toyota Corolla V6 with 185k miles on it and it drove like a top. Engine bay looked brand new because the owner was an older lady that did the stuff I described.

The Ramsey team is not good at giving used car buying advise. This is the largest purchase the caller has ever made. If it goes wrong, it can be their biggest continuing expense. They have no experience and no expertise. I have been buying used cars since 1965. You are not buying just a car, your are buying the previous owner's habits. The holy grail of a used car purchase is from the long term owner with maintenance records. It never happens. If its traded in with records they are thrown away. How do you judge a used car? You don't. You get a PRE purchase inspection. Not just mechanical; but body work also. Just drop by a body shop and ask. Do you think was previously wrecked? Bodymen love to point out previous bad repairs. Have them check for rust. Unless you are buying a very late model car from a franchised new car dealer' "Certification" means nothing. My wife's nephew bought a car from one of the largest national used car chains. It was certified as meeting their standards. When he wrecked it, the previous poor body repair almost totalled the car. Don't become frustrated if your dream car fails the PRE purchase inspection. count your lucky stars, that you aren't paying $150 an hour or more to fix existing problems.
