As a fluent Spanish speaker and a basic French reader, ли should be easy to remember because "if/ whether" is pretty close. In both languages, it's "si", but it's positioned before the uncertainty like in English. Russian grammar is occasionally reminiscent of romance language grammar, other times it can resemble English grammar, the rest of the time it makes my head spin. 🙂🙃🙂🙃

In English, "if" and "whether" are pretty much interchangeable. "I don't know if / whether he is going to come (or not)".
@Mnogojazyk2 жыл бұрын
No, I amn’t so sure “whether” and “if” are quite interchangeable. When “if” means ‘whether’, they are almost interchangeable. But when conditional or provisional meaning is meant, only “if” can be used. Further, only “whether” can be paired with “or not”. “If” and “whether” do overlap in usage. But for structural and semantic reasons, they are not interchangeable.
@Mnogojazyk2 жыл бұрын
@@se777en73120, I didn’t say or imply that “whether” has to be paired with “or not.” Point of clarification: If “or not” is to be included, however, it can be paired only with “whether.”
@richardvalvona11592 жыл бұрын
Not quite. In English "if" can often be used in place of "whether" but not the other way round. "If you upset me, I will cry" means that I'll only cry if you upset me. "Whether [or not] you upset me, I will cry" means that it doesn't matter whether you upset me, I will cry anyway.

А был *ли* мальчик? means: But was the boy? (or: But *did* the boy be?) "ли" appears just after the word to which the question is related. "если" is "if" and never is "whether". Hello friends! How are you? Привет Друзья! Как дела? Privyet druz'ya! Kak dela? ★ My name is Fedor and today you will learn how natives use this little particle “’ЛИ “ [li] in Russian. “’ЛИ “ [Li] means “If” or “Rather”, or “Whether”. Whether he's gonna do it or not; whether I'm hungry or not. Things like that when you decide between two things whether it's this or not. In English, of course, we have “if” to replace it as well: If I'm hungry, if he's coming. But in Russian we have to resort to just one particle “’ЛИ “ [li] for that role in particular. ★ So let's start out with what “’ЛИ “ [Li] really means and how to properly use it in a sentence. And also this is one of the small particles where word order will truly matter. In Russian, as you might know, word order doesn't play as big of a role as it does in English, but with “’ЛИ “ [Li] it surely does. We're gonna talk about that very very shortly, but let's make an example with “’ЛИ “ [Li] and how to properly use it in Russian. I can say: ♦ I don’t know whether he is going to come. Я не знаю, приедет ли он. YA nee znayu, priyedet li on. ➟★ So as you can see we use “’ЛИ “ [Li] here for for this particular reason to say “whether .” ★ I don’t know he will come. Я не знаю, приедет он. YA nee znayu, priyedet on. ➟ If we use a sentence without ли [lee ] it will mean: I don't know he will come. So it's kind of incomplete. We have to put ли [ lee] here to Mean: I don't know whether he's going to come.

What‘s the difference between ли and если if both mean „if“?
@olegpetrov26172 жыл бұрын
Whether means ли. If works in certain cases only.
@LoserKidMusic2 жыл бұрын
Ли is “whether”. Если is “if”. In English “if” is used in two ways. An example of “if” as in “если” would be “if he comes, we will go for a race.” or “if it rains, we will not be drifting.” You can’t use “whether” to replace “if” in this usage of “if”. Then there is “if” in the context of: “what we do depends on if (whether) he comes or not”. In this example, “whether” is replaced with “if”. This is the context where the word “ли” in Russian would be used. It means “whether” more than it means “if” but in English “if” can be used in it’s own way and also as a synonym for “whether” so sometimes it’s translated as “if”. It doesn’t help us learners though because it makes things confusing. I hope that wasn’t too long anyway and helped you to understand the difference. (It’s kinda funny how, to understand these 2 Russian words you actually have to learn the context of the English uses rather than wonder what the Russian context is)
@nil_at2 жыл бұрын
@@LoserKidMusic thank you very much for your explanation with examples, now I understand. The main problem for me is, my mothers tongue is German so I have to translate everything from German to English first and afterwards to Russian. But explanations like yours help a lot. So thank you very much.
