In a time when beauty is defined by supermodels, success is defined by wealth, and fame is deified by how many followers you have on social media, Lizzie Velasquez asks the question how do you define yourself? Once labeled, "The Worlds Ugliest Woman," Lizzie decided to turn things around and create her own definitions of what she defines as beauty and happiness.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

She touched my heart. I grew up with cruelty because the right side of my face is paralyzed. As I aged I became quite beautiful to most, but still some made fun of me even as I grew older. Cruelty is not just happening to kids. I was working for a law firm. I had several surgeries that helped. Unfortunately, getting old (65) is a challenge and not so pretty, but the guys aren’t looking at me these days, they’re looking at my daughters who are beautiful and always have been. Life is hard for people who don’t look quite like you.

It's interesting to me, that visually "unattractive" people, seem to have the most beautiful souls, while some "beautiful" people have the ugliest souls. She can't exploit her beauty for selfish personal-gains. She had to beautify the only thing she had control of: her soul, and damn she did a good job. She's a truly beautiful woman!

I'm crying because her positivity is so genuine and beautiful. I'm crying because I feel like I've been so ungrateful and complaining unnecessarily that I'm unable to see the value of the things I already have. I'm crying because of how strong she is and if more people carried even an ounce of her strength, I truly believe that the world would be so much better.

Like srsly. Parents play a big role in mental health of a person. If my parents didn't focus too much on my appearance, I might've had a but more confidence in myself. Cuz these days, whenever I'm talking to someone, I think "is my double chin showing up?" Or "am I looking weird?". And this all started ever since my mother and siblings started calling me names whenever they were angry. They might've vented off their anger for the time but they made me feel miserable and I can't forget little thing like that. I wish I was mentally strong like this girl (I admire her so much). Tho I'm trying to change but it's really hard...

Bullying is not a reality of life and yes, when you go through that other things might not seem that bad but what's the cost of that. Some people get a thick skin and some of them get depression, anxiety and kill themselves. Reporting the bullying is not overprotecting.
