The best extinct reptile name is Aerodactylus scolopacieps. Theoretically named Aerodactylus, or wind-finger, as a descriptive name, in practical terms named after a Pokemon

There's also a "Bulbasaurus" genus of dicynodont-it does have a bulbous nose, but we think the researchers knew what they were doing 😉

The creator of Pokemon was obsessed by dinosaurs and insects as a lid. This is how he created Pokemon.

This video is so cool, if I were to become a paleontologist someday and discover a new dinosaur or pterosaur species via a fossil in the field, I would name it after its country, a celebrity or one of my favorite things.

Probably not a great idea naming things after celebrities.

ime it often is used as a way to get a publicity boost for threatened or endangered animals (the extant ones that get named like that that is) I get what you're saying dgmw! I'm just pointing out it can be used as a push to protect animals/habitats that most people couldn't give two hoots about otherwise. (also the same can be argued of any other "fun"-type names given. if someone in 1920 named a dino after finding it in North Korea, or some word that over the years has turned into a derogatory word (or even slur), or after a colleague that ended up murdering his wife 20 years later, etc)

[holy text wall, batman] tldr every name has some risk of not aging well, but it can be beneficial in the moment when the name gets announced.

It happens all the time. Chilean here. Our national flower is the copihue, an elegant climbing plant. Scientific name, Lapageria rosea. Why? "Lapageria is named for Marie Joséphine Rose Tascher de la Pagerie (1763-1814), also known as Napoleon's Empress Josephine, who was a keen collector of plants for her garden at Château de Malmaison. Rosea means 'flushed rose' or 'flushed pink'." In 1802, she was enough of a celebrity for a Spanish botanist using her name.

@@MariaMartinez-researcher Yeah I'm sure there was a much better person to name it after.
