Any Rebel totally agree, that's what I hate about forced rigid schedule, I know I learn way better when's its spontaneous. But for school you don't have a choice, so you have to somehow find this passion on command. Maybe people can learn without passion too, but that's something that I struggle with personally.

When I defeat procrastination, I do it by asking myself a simple question: when would be a better time for me to do this? If I actually have a good, honest, not self-serving or self-deceptive answer about a point in the future in which it would really be better to do this thing, then I'll make an appointment with myself to do it then and it becomes very difficult to break that appointment. And if I don't have a better time to do something that I know needs to be done, well then I just get on with it, and I can do it without the regret that I could be doing something better right now.

Yeah I follow this too. If I can't be bothered to do something, I just imagine the stress it's going to cause me later when I have to do it anyway. It's like, do I want to study now and relax later or piss about doing nothing, pretending to study and then have no actual relaxing time because I've been wasting time not doing anything while I should've studied, and then I had to study later anyway.

Awww 🥰 Jordan, love your old videos. Everything matters because everything and everyone is connected. We can’t really manipulate anything, we just think we can. And deep down we know that we know we can’t. We are aware of being aware but we try because it’s human nature. The little voice telling us it matters is our consciousness/self-awareness. Agape love is the love we share with Almighty God. Luv ya Jordan. 😘🙋🏻‍♀️

Jordan Peterson completely blew my mind. I've been looking for a solution to this problem for as long as I can remember, this is the first time I hear something deeper than the "just do it" platitudes. I feel like I've been one of the foolish virgins all along, and if I don't do something about it it's going to be too late.

"The role of things like anxiety and terror in promoting proper development is under addressed, because we think of those things as our enemies. The guy on the right was very motivated to make a good point and it paid off. Great vid. Peterson's point is a bit muddled in his theocracy. A good way to say it would be "The fundamental truth we can all agree to is that we have this one life at a minimum. Therefore we should split our time between enjoying the fruits of the labours that people before us invested, and investing our own labours to ensure those that come after us enjoy a better life."

I remember being lectured like this - except it was my own mind, not Peterson. And as a traumatised lad there was no positive vision I could project, just hell to descend to. I struggled for decades, but it has led me to a place which I don't think Peterson knows about. What he doesn't mention is that all good people must face hell - the dark night of the soul. Such is the world! But we don't stay there forever. And we come to know the true positive, because we were never satisfied by projections of it.

Thanks for the link - I watched it. I like the way Peterson talks about this, but I think he could go a bit deeper into the essence of the divide between Cain and Abel. I'm saying there is no divide in the sense of a two-way choice. There is only one option, which if taken leads to error. Abel isn't 'good' because he's figured out the right thing, he's good because he doesn't bother with the wrong thing - for example, he doesn't squander his resources by unproductively ruminating on their absence. Abel doesn't suffer limitation because he doesn't take it to be his essence - he doesn't recognise limitation as being 'outside' the unlimited. So Abel's sacrifices are all made within God's kingdom and therefore can't fail to be accepted - he already is accepted. Whereas Cain's sacrifices are predicated on the notion he is outside, and that he might fail to come in, which he concretises by demanding to come in.

Jordan Peterson really knows how to hammer home a point and bounce off of what his colleague said. I've always had a problem with salience. Procrastination has become more and more of a thing for me. The only thing I think about is how I can entertain myself "when all this boring crap is over". It's just easier (and in some ways happier, some ways not) for me to go about this way. I think it's important for people to force themselves to do things they don't want to, however, to improve themselves and to improve their lives, as well as the lives of others connected to them. No one wants to live in an apathetic world, it can be very miserable, even if you do get instant gratification from it.

A good example of this. I constantly get distracted by my facebook. I tried for a moment to step away from that, and look at it for what it is. I am sitting on a stool, staring at a web page scrolling. Analyzing a variety of content on different subjects, whilst not delving too deep into the individual subjects. Add a smart phone into that, and it's all you're able to do. Basically just found a silver bullet for my procrastination :D. (hopefully)

Actualized has a video on this. What it adds among other things is that you can't escape procrastination through sheer willpower alone, you have to find why is it that you don't like what you are currently doing and what could be done about it. If you don't start getting rid of structural internal problems you'll end up procrastinating again.

This is not hyperbolic discounting. Hyperbollic discounting is when the comparison between two events spread apart by a given time depends on if the first event happens immediatedly or if it happens much later. For instance, if I prefer 98 dollars now to 100 tomorrow, this is just true with any kind of discounting. However, if I prefer 98 dollars now to 100 tomorrow, but prefer 100 dollars in 31 days to 98 dollars in 30 days, that is hyperbollic discounting. With the typical form of discounting (i.e., if you obeyed something like a compound interest rule), you would always prefer 98 dollars one day ahead of 100 dollars if it is true for any two pairs of day. You apply some kind of subjective "interest" rate and it's always the same. With hyperbollic discounting, that rate decrease with time -- a well known approximation is quasi-hyperbollic discounting where the rate drop between the first and the second period, but then stays constant forever.

Exactly.....Furthermore for example the thing that Peterson says sounds fanciful, to be sure, but it doesn´t work. Every smoker knows that smoking will kill them if they keep smooking, and that they would be healthy in future if they quit smoking BUT it doesn´t work, because they don´t quit smoking although they know the pathways to "heaven and hell"!!

What's funny is Peterson is exactly correct, and I've known this by observing my own procrastination. I work harder when I think about what might happen down the road if I don't do the work. These days I want to procrastinate so badly that sometimes I notice when I'm about to think of the future, I remember that that's going to make me work, so I stop myself, effectively procrastinating thinking about my own procrastination. Don't fall into that trap it's very stressful.

Procrastination has mostly to do with doubt. If we knew what to do, we would not procrastinate. The chaos has to do with the overwhelming number of options that appears as we don't follow any track in any direction. Is that good or bad? When or if you finally make a choice it will probably be better than if you just did something as an immediate response to a difficult situation. At some point you just have to do something, and that something could be anything just to create change or a momentum. Roll the dice.

You can visualize something in a box. (look *at* it) For example a cigarette, to judge wheather it is good or bad You can visualize something outside a box (look *through* it) Don't look at many unlikely events. Look at the general short&long term outcome. -> Develop a detailed vision of heaven and hell -> What would your life look like if it was really good? It should be self-sustaining, achievable, just the way it should be. It should be best for you if you were taking care of yourself. -> What would be best for you in 3-5 years if you were really taking care of yourself if you were someone you must care for (and people would like to have around)? . -> What would your life look like if you let it become as bad as you can make it if you let yourself go? -> You can't say "it doesn't matter" when you let yourself go now -> Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom

Procrastination assumes that you’re putting off something you know you should be doing. But what if you have no idea what you should be doing in the first place !
