I was repairing a part and just had to share my joy of using my Monarch 10ee to cut threads...I hope you enjoy the short discussion/demo

So simple even a klutz like me could cut a blind internal thread! That Monarch must have the longest saddle in the world. Regards, Preso

Thanks for the demonstration Chuck. I remember doing threads on a Monarch in Junior High School when I was a kid.

The ELSR 10EE's are the sweetest machines I've ever used to do single point threading on. When I installed an AC Servo drive on mine, I incorporated a couple of proximity switches to take place of the original mechanical cams to give it true Electronic Lead Screw Reverse. The original mechanical system is still fully functional, but the prox. switches stop it a bit more accurately. The modification I made that makes the biggest difference when threading is independent forward and reverse speeds. I set reverse to high speed allowing for a fast return to the starting point. Whenever I'm able to get mine back up and running I want to work on integrating a second servo to the leadscrew to allow me to do Metric threading as I'm probably working in metric more than imperial these days. Independent forward/reverse speeds was an option on 10EE's, but seems to be a pretty rare option as was Constant Surface Speed (something else I'd like to incorporate).

I'm spoiled with my Hardinge HLV too. A little different process but just as easy with no worries of crashing. 😛

Very nice Chuck. I wish my 10EE had it, but is still faster than normal threading due to the stops in the cross slide.

When I was watching you demonstrate the procedure and you were showing the cross slide stops, I was thinking to myself that you were turning the crank in the wrong direction when you were saying going in and coming out, but then I remembered that you were cutting internal threads. They did make that machine extremely user friendly. It's too bad that the electronics on those machines can be troublesome.

Those 10EEs look like nice machines, that threading feature is very cool. I’d love to find one but I suppose I’m stuck with threading on my Hardinge HLV-H until I do! 😊. Cheers from Florida’s Space Coast.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression your Hardinge also has a mechanism to make threading simple, or is that an optional add-on?

@@russelldold4827 It does. The compound has a handle that moves it in and out so the half nut is never disengaged from the lead screw. It’s a very nice feature of these machines. I believe Rob Renz did a threading video using his HLV-H. It’s my favorite machine tool in the shop.

@@charlieromeo7663Thanks for your reply. I've known about the Hardinge HLV and its reputation for excellence for nearly 50 years, but never seen one in the flesh. I missed out on a Hardinge chucker on Gumtree (our local version of craigslist) by about an hour - I would have bought it sight unseen and happily driven the 2000 mile round trip to collect it. I ended up with an Okuma LP, which is their version of a toolroom lathe, and am very happy with it.

?? Non video related, but While I was watching NHRA Drag race this Sunday on TV, I realized you are only minutes away from Sonoma (@@)! You Lucky man, I have always wanted to go there for Finial's. Oh, really cool tip on the 10ee. Thx chuck, Keep on Keeping On!

My sister worked for Fram, we would go to Sonoma every year, alway lunch etc in their hospitality tent, then we got Tower passes, one year we watched the starting line below us (AC room), the Olympics on on monitor and replays of the run on the other monitor. Friday night 9pm, back in the day the end of track was VERY dark, Funny Cars ready to qualify and in walks John Force, loud as hell bitching about the dark….slams down 2 beers and heads out the door to run one hell of a pass…that was a night to remember of the many many years following the NHRA, I have a lot of other stories…lol

My Sammie and Don were very close. She was a pit crew member for Tme Bandit in NorWalk Ohio and would spend hrs with Don talking about ////Quess I will never know(@@)!

So why aren't you creating more threading videos? So how can I get one for my lathe (an HF 7 X 16)? The more I learn about the Monarch 10EE the more I want one. KOKO!

What ho Chuck, not being picky but is your top slide at 30 or 60 degrees. From the camera viewpoint it looks wrong. 🤨 As for easy threading, you have seen my video, haven't you?😉 i have also built one for internal threads, but never developed it past working prototype, maybe one day i will when i have a couple of minutes to spare😮 Hope all well with you and the family. Its gone midnight here and im waiting in the garden to feed the badgers, they're late tonight 😢 ATB c
