One of my fondest memories as a child was watching my mum scream as Johnny landed the drop goal. As a kid, you don't comprehend just how important this game was for English Rugby, but as an adult, I've come to cherish it.

Watched this in a sports bar in Tokyo, with hundreds of other expats. Loads of Aussies and English fans were there, and a few confused and slightly intimidated Yanks and Japanese wondering what all the fuss was about. I'll never forget the roar the English contingent let out when Jason Robinson scored his try and when Wilko slotted the drop goal at the end. Best sporting-related moment of my life. That 2002-2003 England team was effing awesome.

@@tomsatinet am I the only England fan who thought we were taking the piss in the scrum in the second half? Andre Watson repeatedly warned us in the scrum and we didn't listen and conceded 3 penalities as a consequence. The last one was a simple call because we were constantly engaging/ driving early

That moment made my childhood at 11 years old!! 3 weeks later we had an inter school 7s tournament, I scored a try in front of those that had come to support us in the final and done the Robinson slide, dig and ‘come on’ celebration. Great memories.

@SuperHolmesy yes, I think you're right about some fans & I think we may have got a bit excited with the current team in the world cup but we so rarely get something to shout about I think we sometimes go over the top. That's why we never shut up about 2003 & 1966, this stuff's few & far between for us! 😂 Sorry if it comes over as arrogant ✌️

6 penalties against England at the scrum in the second half, more than for all the rest of the competition put together. Our props stop pushing in case they are penalised. You can't say the SA ref didn't try.

I was six years old, didnt have much idea what was going on. Sitting in my nans living room with my Rugby mad uncle, my mum, my aunt, cousin and of course my Nan. My uncle was shouting at the TV, I was half watching half playing with some toys on the floor. My nan was watching and my mum and aunt were talking for most of it 😂😂. That all changed in the final minutes, somehow even I knew what was going on was amazing, we were all watching eyes glued to the screen, (pretty sure my aunt, cousin and mum haven't watched a game of rugby since). The second Jonny landed that kick, my uncle leapt off his chair and nearly put his head through the ceiling, my mum and aunt were cheering and threw me into the air 😂 and my nan just lifted her tea in her hand and laughed. We celebrated the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. My Aunt and uncle divorced about ten years later, my nan died about a year after and my uncle passed away about two years ago and I haven't seen my cousin in nearly three years. Its then you realise how quickly things change and how important it is to hold onto memories like that.

You're right. I remember watching this epic moment with my dad and again in 2005 when the England cricket team finally won back the Ashes after 18 years of hurt. Tears of joy, both times. My dad died in 2011, so we'll never watch anything together again. So glad I got to experience rare English sporting success with him in 2003 and 2005.

Ben Kay drops the ball but his players dont give out to him, they support him. That support allows him to make the risky call late in the game to win it. That right there is the difference in culture between rugby and football.

England actually had 65% of posession and to win in the last minute by a field goal with that amount of posession was not that good. However England has gone forward and the Australian game is in dissaray - mainly to do with the management and administration.

Sport has natural drama. Overhyping it with distracting music indicating when you're supposed to feel what just takes away from that. Being authentically affected by the unfolding events is exciting; being manipulated by the artificial signals of stereotypical music for the millionth time is not. Subtle music can add to sport, but attention-directing music replaces its space in the viewer's attention.
@george474747
@george474747 3 жыл бұрын
The timed drum effects are especially ridiculous. What's happened to our culture's appreciation for nuance and artistry? Sport used to be so beautiful... I guess films and TV have taught everyone that the viewer has to be explicitly told what to feel instead of allowing subtle forms of inspiration the space to build up.
