The late 70's/early 80's team with Dr. J was an exciting time to be a Sixers fan. I remember those days...there was nothing more exciting than getting home from school on Friday and having the weekend off and watching the Sixers on Prism on Friday night. Those days were the best. The Doc was God. They were always one of the top teams in the league and were capable of winning it but they never seemed to be able to get it done. When Moses came around , the team knew they had something special and made sure they got it done. It was awesome to watch them dominate that season and i'm glad Moses got Doc the ring.

This is the team that made me love the NBA and the Sixers. The NBA was not particularly popular until Dr J came along.

The '83 Sixers were the OG 2017 Warriors. A consistent title contender that added a top 3 player in the world (Moses and KD), was headlined by the most transcendent player of his era (Dr. J and Steph), had a lethal shooting player at the 2 (Toney and Klay), the best defender of that era (Jones and Draymond), and they only lost once in the playoffs (12-1 and 16-1). The parallels are uncanny.

The 82-83 sixers were very good. Dominant. Beat the Lakers twice in the regular season then swept them in the finals. That’s 6-0 v LA that season.

This 82-83 team was so good defensively. Actually dominant. Very deep bench. Jones, Richardson, Johnson and Earl. 3 players on any given night capable of getting 40 or 50. Toney Erving Malone could close out games. Finished the year 8-8 by resting players. Topped out at 57-9. 70 wins was possible. For the second time Erving lessoned his role for the team. Side note at 34 years old Erving averaged more points per game than his first 2 years in Philly. Doc is horribly underrated. Fo' Fo' Fo' turned into 4,5,4. Thanks Moses RIP. Chairman of the Boards.

1982-83 Sixers started 50-7, just a game off of the pace of the 50-6 1995-96 Bulls start; that’s how good they were.

i was born in 73, living in a philly suburb and then Philly. My first impressions were that the Sixers would always be an elite team. I couldn't imagine an NBA without the Sixers, Lakers, and Celtics running it. Those moves in 86 plus the injuries of Toney destroyed the franchise. They never recovered from it

1982-83. The best Sixers team ever. They beat the L.A. Lakers in 4 straight to win the NBA Championship in 1983. Game 1 at Philadelphia: Sixers 113 Lakers 107; Game 2 at Philadelphia: Sixers 103 Lakers 93; Game 3 at L.A. Sixers 111 Lakers 94; Game 4 at L.A. Sixers 115 Lakers 108. Way to go Sixers! I'm a Dr. J fan from Texas. Deep South Texas.

The "FO, FO, FO" team that won the Title in '83 is still the last Sixer team to win it all. This upcoming season will mark 40 years since that achievement. Who'd have thunk that? A combination of injury, old age, bad luck kept that team from winning another one. Even with a young and dynamic Charles Barkley added to the team, they couldn't do it. It took the Sixers a full 18 years and new ownership to even reach the Finals again, only to lose to the Shaq/Kobe Lakers in five games. To paraphrase the great Pat Riley: "Winning these things is hard."

Dr J is underrated for all-time lists if you include ABA, i have him #6 higher then Kobe/Magic/Bird for guards/smallfowards... he's as good as anyone including MJ at scoring from the Free Throw Circle and in for perimeter players, and his Rebounding & Blocking is as good as anyone from outside... in today's game he would be Giannis but better as he is a far more talented scorer & shooter... my favorite play is his dunk on Walton after dribbling up the right side in the 1977 finals, maybe the greatest display of talent in NBA history--the mountain man had him locked down and Dr J made it no contest by getting up so high Walton can only cry to the ref... fax!!!

To me, "Dr.J" isn't properly considered in the debates (maybe because he won mainly in the ABA): the Sixers won less than deserved (between '77 and '83 made 4 Finals winning just one - they had to face either the Celtics in the ECF or LA in the Finals), but "Dr.J" himself, with his ABA-style way of playing inspired players like MJ: that's his main legacy

This is awesome, but it would be amazing to see a follow up highlighting the craziest things Dr J did in the ABA, and how good his competition was in the playoffs.

This brought back my childhood.I remember going down to the Spectrum.The energy was unbelievable.Also leaving school in the 5th grade to join the parade at Broad & Snyder heading to Veterans stadium was a memory that I will never forget.

The 1983 championship team (the only NBA championship team for which Julius Erving played) was the Moses Malone 76ers. Moses was the MVP of the 1983 Finals, as well as league MVP 🙂

Yes that was true, the Celtics got Dennis Johnson specifically to stop Andrew toney. Dennis Johnson was known as a very good defensive guard, and it helped.

The center position was weak going up against Walton in 77, then the Lakers with Kareem. Moses Malone was the missing piece they needed.

Fo-fo-fo sixers is right at the top of the list for best team all time. 96 bulls, KD warriors an 01 lakers. They should’ve won in 77 but that fight killed their morale. Dr. J was a monster in those finals too. The man myth an legend is the goat. Best player of his generation an most influential player in the sport. Yes I said it. Only thing I’d add is don’t undersell his aba numbers an stature. He saved basketball. No nba without this man.

I used to like watching the 76ers. What I enjoyed most was watching “chocolate thunder” Darryl Dawkins dunking and taking the basket down.

The trading of Moses and the trading of the 1st overall pick (Daugherty) in offseason '86 was one of the worst moves in NBA franchise history! Like Barkley said, "You trade one or the other - but you don't trade both!!!!"

A couple points: The Nets had to sell Dr. J to the Sixers just to get into the NBA as they had to pay an "encroachment fee" of $4.8 million to the New York Knicks. So to get into the league, the ABA's best team had to pay an otherwise middling team in the Knicks and strengthen a divisional rival in the Sixers just to get a seat at the table AND they couldnt get any of the NBA TV money for four years. CBS was going to kickoff the 76-77 season with a then rare nationally televised coast to coast live (This was the era of tape delay and weeknight non playoff games on national tv were rare) game with the Nets NBA debut in Oakland against a top flight Golden State team. When the deal to sell Dr. J was completed and announced, CBS cancelled the broadcast. (Ironically, the Nets won a 104-103 thriller) The Nets went from ABA champs to the NBA's worst record at 22-60, meanwhile the Sixers made the NBA finals in Dr. J's first year in Philly.

This team finished with a 65-17 record . Dr. J sat out the last 10 games , i believe they went 5-5 in those games . Moses Malone sat the last four games they went 1-3 .

Nice change in the music when you start discussing the 83 season. Before you even did that I was getting a little pumped for that year because that particular team has always been one of my favorites.

Until Bad Boy Pistons & MJ‘s Bulls, you couldn’t win a chip without a dominant Center.

I don't know about "best" team ever, but I thought the Sixers teams with Moses, Dr J, Tony, and Cheeks were the best *constructed* teams ever. Like they're my default template when I think of how I'd build the best team I could think of, if I had the wherewithal. One thing I would note, though, is that a lot of fans who weren't born yet at that time have complained about "superteams" since 2010. The Sixers were already a great team with Dr J (3 trips to the finals in 6 seasons), and were then able to add Moses. If you don't like stars pooling together on one team, you would have hated the NBA of the first half of the 1980s. For a short time roughly 13 of the best 20 players in the league were all on 3 teams.

Dr. J's 76ers were one of the best teams around during the late 1970's and early 80's. Dr. J's Sixers downfall was having to play Magic Johnson and Kareem's LA Lakers. The Sixers were good enough to beat the Celtics 2-out-of-3 times during the early 1980's and they should have beaten the 1977 Portland Trailblazers. A lot of the Sixers failures during that period had to be a bit mental. If it wasn't for the Sixers losing to the Celtics in the 1981 ECF, they probably win the 1981 Finals. But were still more than capable losing to the Moses Malone led 1981 Houston Rockets. Other than the LA Lakers, the Sixers inexplicably lost big games they should have won during that period. I watched all of the 1980-thru-1982 ECF with them playing the Celtics. I didn't realize how well both of those teams played defense during a man-to-man NBA era. Dr. J was a very underrated defensive player in his day.

It's interesting to consider that if the '80-'81 76ers team had not blown a 3 - 1 lead against the Celtics in the EC Finals, they would have gone on to face the Moses Malone led Rockets in the Finals. That Rockets team actually had a losing record during the regular season but squeaked into the playoffs and got hot behind Moses dominant play. Although Moses would have toyed with the Sixers big men, Philly had the more talented roster overall and probably would have won that series and become NBA champs. If the Sixers had won that title in 1981, it seems unlikely that they would have made the trade for Moses in 1982. Therefore, that 1983 championship team probably wouldn't have existed if the Sixers had not choked away that 1981 series to the Celtics.

The 86-87 76ers lost 3-2 to Mil in the first round. Not in 7. The first round didn't become best of 7 until 2003.

Moses Malone trade to Washington was one of the worst trades in the history of the NBA

Part of the reason why the Sixers got him because the Nets had to pay the Knicks a ridiculously large territory rights because the Knicks didn’t want to share the New York market with them. They used the money to pay the fee.

Don't forget about the 1988 Nba draft when they had the third pick who they could've drafted Mitch Richmond and pair him up with Charles Barkley to form a dynamic duo for years to come at that time

Great video. The Sixers should've won 5 championships during Doc's career with the Philadelphia 76ers and here is how... They win in 77 had George McGinnis not choked. McGinnis choked again in 78 and was destroyed by the great Elvin Hayes. Sixers should've beat the Washington Bullets in 7 games and then defeated Seattle SuperSonics for what would've been their second consecutive championship. A healthy Doug Collins in 79 and Philly wins the Eastern conference again and battles the eventual champion SuperSonics through a 7 game classic. Nobody was beating the Lakers in 80 and 82 Blowing that 3-1 lead against the Celtics in 81 should've never happened. That would be championship number 3 right there. 83 is the greatest team ever. No way they should've choked against the Nets in 84. As much as I love Doc he came up short in game 5 after guaranteeing victory. 12 points and 7 turnovers is just unacceptable. Had we beat the Nets we then defeat the Milwaukee Bucks for the fourth straight season and then battle the eventual champion Boston Celtics in the Eastern conference finals. 85 the Celtics were better although we take them 7 if Andrew Toney doesn't have those foot problems. A healthy Moses Malone and Andrew Toney along with the rise of Charles Barkley and the 76ers of 1986 wins the championship. That 86 Celtics team would not beat a healthy Sixers in a 7 game series. Not with a prime Moses, Toney and rising Barkley. That is their 5 championships during Doc's era.. The 87 team even without Moses Malone reaches the second round. Had Harold Katz not idiotically traded big Mo Philly reaches the conference finals. Whacked dynamics resulting in injuries, poor play and bad trades is what hampered the Sixers throughout the years.

The Sixers were one of the worst teams in the league before Dr J joined the roster. Not only did he prove that the ABA was a legitimately-talented product; he led that team to the Finals right out of the gates and helped them return there three, additional times over the next six years. To me, he deserves to be included in the elite group of the best 15 players to ever play because of all he accomplished in two, competitive leagues.

Holy crap! That 1983 East All Star team pic (11:35)...counting (trying!) the HOFers: Isiah Thomas, Larry Bird, Parrish, Moses, Sidney Moncrief, Marques Johnson, Dr. J. Great pic... is that friggin' Bill Laimbeer? HAHAHA! His first several years, Laimbeer was a rebounding menace for the Pistons (over 11 rebs/game 6 straight seasons).

World B. Free: The man who almost brought MJ to the Sixers. Let me explain. In 1978, they traded Free to the Clippers for their 1984 first-round pick. In the 1984 season finale, the Clippers beat Utah, and just missed finishing with the worst record in the West. If the Jazz win that game, The Sixers are in the last Super Flip with the Blazers, and they are taking MJ no matter what (with the Blazers getting Akeem). As a result, the Bulls would have drafted Sam Bowie. Then, they would have shipped him to Seattle for Sonic C Jack Sikma, an Illinois native.

From 1976-77 through 1986-87, the 11 years Dr. J was with the team the top three teams were.. Lakers with 617 wins, 76ers with 605, and Celtics with 598. They just always seemed one puzzle piece away from being the top team other than 1982-83. But they were consistently good.

The sixers and Dr J opposite to common conception were the dominant force in the east between 77 and 83 and have beaten the celtics a lot..Dr j was unlucky to land with the sixers and have to share the offense with McGinnis,Free and Collins..while his fg remained exactly the same as in ABA he was given only 17 fga instead of 22/23 whitch is typical for a star of his calliber and in the 1977 finals after a very toxic lockeroom all season he still averaged 30 with .54 fg while McGinnis and Free completely flopped as they did sgain next season playoffs were Dr J performed again great..he was robbed a ring , immediate Nba dominance and finals mvp from his toxic teammates and the coach who didnt even want him in the team and had sour feelings to the doc and owner for not advising him about acquiring Dr J...Even in the 81 series against the Celtics who were called the best of all times the Sixers committed suicide again in multiple ways(allowing toney ball hogging and taking very I'll advised shots at the End of game 6) or allowing Celtics to drag them into fights and ruckus in order to stop the Sixers momentum and dunk fest..their coaching and back office was never to this day able to put the foundations required for a dynasty and they have burned eventually many superstar legacies!!!

McGinnis was inconsistent in offense and a poor foul shooter,Free was a ball hog while with the Sixers. Things improved when Andrew Toney and Moses Malone went on board.

There are a few articles long prior to 1977 finals talking about the toxic sixers locker room concluding along Dr J wife, that there is no way that this assembly of competative individuals will win a ring that year..the situation was as bad as 20 year old Dawkins was play me or trade me and then went to the finals and shot a .4 fg while Free in the same mindset shot a miserable .3 and McGinnis the bus driver wannabe .38..one can see the parallel with Kd nets...no matter how many years together Kd,Harden and Kyrie will never win a chip..one can deduct the exact opposite from Kareem case..Kareem went on without a ring 9 years straight from his first and could have ended only with 1 if he hadn't met with Magic who was a perfect fit for Kareem and vice versa!

The Sixers did NOT buy Doc for $6M. They paid $3M, plus they gave him a $3M contract (over 6 years). World belongs in the Basketball Hall of Fame. McGinnis was a bricklayer. Toney was an assassin, and was on his way to the HoF until derailed by injuries. Fo, Fo, and Fo. The Sixers with Doc was a great team. During that period, it was the Sixers, Celts, and Lakers. Every. Single. Year.
