NBA Greatest Trios: Malone, Erving & Toney vs Bucks (1983 ECF Game 5)

10 жыл бұрынAndrew Toney, one of the best guards in the early 80's, Julius Erving, one of the greatest SF's ever and Moses Malone, one of the greatest centers ever. When you combine this three superstars with Maurice Cheeks and Bobby Jones you get one of the best teams in basketball history -- 1983 Philadelphia 76ers.
Malone, Erving and Toney were ''BIG 3'' at that time, leading the Sixers in scoring in both regular season, playoffs and the finals. They were amazing in the close out Game 5 against the Bucks.
Moses Malone: 28 points, 17 rebounds, 4 blocks on 12/18 FG.
Julius Erving: 24 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks on 10/19 FG.
Andrew Toney: 30 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds on 10/14 FG and 10/13 FT.
Sixers won the game 115:103 and went on to play in the NBA finals against Los Angeles Lakers.

I used to say the same except when I watch the 1986 Boston Celtics and say that team is most definitely a candidate. 1987 lakers, 1989 Pistons and one of those late 90s bulls teams would give them all they could handle. They definitely wouldn’t sweep any of them like they did the Lakers.

That sixer team was must watch. The Doctor , Moses the offensive rebounding machine , Bobby Jones running on the break like a gazelle , Mo cheeks pushing the ball and setting the offense like a true point guard , and finally the great Andrew Toney before he broke his foot. That team was amazing.

Game 1 of this series went to overtime, and was some of the finest basketball ever played. Bucks were coming off a sweep of Bird and the Celtics. Sixers had crushed a pretty good Bernard King Knicks team that would take the Celtics to seven games the next year. By this game five the Bucks were done, obviously, but they were the only team to put up a fight against the Sixers in the '83 playoffs. 1983 Sixers were the best team ever.

+JD Mo As a Bucks fan, we remember when Philadelphia would cause us fits that would end our season year after year. I cried after that first game. In the '81 ECSM, the 76ers won game 7 by one point. we would finally beat them in '86 (in wouldn't you know it, 7 games)

+Ryan Strnad I definitely cried after that game 7 in 1981. Lanier was so much better than Dawkins and Caldwell Jones. Marques had outplayed Doc most of the series. But Bobby Jones and Lionel Hollins made the big plays for the Sixers in the final minutes. It was heartbreaking.

+JD Mo That was on Easter Sunday. If there was any consolation to that, is when as time was ticking down in that 7th game with Dr. J having the ball and it looking saddenly apparent that we'd lose, Dr. J was driving to the basket and as the buzzer was about to sound, instead of dunking it where he had a golden opportunity to just slam it down right in front of his fans and everything, he just held on to the ball and landed while holding himself back. That gave me instant respect for him. I was in the 3rd grade when this series had happened and it was my first year of following sports. Before this series, about my only impression of Dr. J was in that famous at the time "Dr. Chapstick!" commercial. And I did remember Marcus holding him for most of the series.

4 very good teams that's for sure. That 71-72 Lakers team that won 33 in a row would've been up there as well. This past season's Golden State Warriors team, while they did hit an NBA record 73 regular season wins, they fluttered in the playoffs as we all know. I think them losing it (Almost to Oklahoma City and) to the Cav's showed that they lacked the pshycological strength and balance of what could have been a championship team. But they did get one title (the year before).

As a lifelong Sixers fan I remember those Bucks teams well. I kinda felt sorry for them since they were darn good but they played in the wrong era. I loved the NBA in those days but I have to say I have a hard time getting into the NBA now. The '83 Sixers had it all. What a great luxury to have Clint Richardson and the great Bobby Jones coming off the bench.

Without question, one of the greatest NBA teams of all times, this comming from a huge Knicks fan. When I heard that Harold Katz went out and got Moses Malone, i told a college friend of mine, who was from Bucks County, that the Sixers will win the 83'Championship, he thought I was nuts. Erving, Malone, Jones, Cheeks, Toney, Richardson, and even Mark Iveroni was a ridicuous lineup.

maybe the most underrated "BIG THREE'' in nba history...drj and moses had he last 3 nba mvp...toney was great offensive force but had short career due to injuries,he had 4 great sesons though and maybe he should be in HOF.thsese 76ers were amzing,they had cheeks.bobby jones,richerdson...great team!

People forget that during this time, the Bucks were a perennial 60-win team. They just never had what it took to take them over the hump to the next level. I loved them anyway...

The Bucks were just coming off a sweep of the Celtics in the previous round. The Sixers were great! The Bucks were the only team to win just a single playoff game vs. Sixers that year but they were trailing 3-0 in series before that happened.

I LOVED this team so much. One of the all time greatest teams ever. Such a shame Toney's stress fractures cut him down so young in his career. One of the best shooting guards in the NBA in the early 80s.

The Boston strangler was a straight marksman and killer.Great first step and deadly shooter.Andrews feet went bad,such an important part of those sixers teams.Moses was as good as any center I have seen.Watched Moses dismantle teams with his relentless work on the glass as well as having a feathery touch from the perimeter.I remember this team so clearly brings tears to my eyes.The smells sounds and memories of the Spectrum are still so vivid even today and I am ever so grateful to have seen those teams live so many times.Brings a tear to my eyes of joy and happiness.Lets go sixers oh yeah Julius Eeeeeeerving as the Zink used to proclaim so eloquently and with passion.Mo cheeks with his lighting quick hands could pick any point guards pocket.I could go on and on but I would never stop.Stay well and keep up the great work.

I don't know if you've ever heard Bird or Barkley speak about Toney, but they have the utmost respect for him. Bird said he was the guy (on Philly) Boston feared the most. Charles always said he felt Andrew was the guy he wanted to have the ball in the clutch.

Well Moses and Toney had to deal with injuries after 1983, Erving and Bobby Jones were aging. And let's not forget the Celtics. In 1985, the 76ers played the Celtics in the ECF but the Celtics were at their peak.

their starting lineup was 2 all time greats, 2 all star caliber players and the 6-9 white stiff...Bobby jones was one of great 6th men in nba history, great defender, could shoot, pass and fit in seamlessly with any team. Everyone knew they would win it in 83 once moses came....kind of a one hit wonder because J was getting older. They were still good after 83 but not great, leo celtic fan....the fakers never had to go thru a excellent team like Philly to get to finals like celtics did

Yea Dr J & Malone were Super Stars but Maurice Cheeks & Andrew Toney would kill me as a Laker Fan. That Pull Up Jumper from the Top of the Key, you knew it was coing but could not be stopped. That Dr J Dunk on Cooper was Amazing, too bad I was on the receiving end of the Celebration. Best time ever to be an NBA Fan back in the 80's!

My favorite team the 76ers Ivaroni was not a starting caliber player they still won with a starting 4 and Bobby Jones off the bench . The 66-67 team and this team 2 of the greatest teams ever.

The sixers needed Malone. He gave them the third star that LA and Boston had. This was also a very good Bucks team that beat Boston in the semifinals. What if the sixers had Malone since 77 or 78. History would be very different.

The best team in the Nba playing the most entairtaining style of bb..in this video you can clearly see why Doc is the best Combo forward of all times..Scoring,attacking the rim,open court nightmare and a constant threat for steals blocks and offensive boards..that man retired no 3 to 30000 points and 10000 boards had 3 offensive boards per game way more than many centers and more that all current nba bigs and no 2 all time in steals(still no 8) and no 10 all time in blocks whitch is insane(still no 23)..too bad the. Sixers forced him down to 17 fga per game from his usual 22,23 in ABA to accomodate McGinnis and never created special system for him in the paunt where he was a real brut force above the rim even out of his prime...

Bobby Jones great on defense and ran the court for easy dunks and layups on offense. He deserved more attention for his play. Toney was Amazing and Cheeks was a director but he made me laugh always dribbling right side right handed 🤣🤣🏀🏀

Moses Malone took Philly to "the promise land." the orig relentless beast mode down low. "shot and a foul" was innate talent to draw fouls; automatic at the free throw line. quiet team leader. ‘Fo, Fo, Fo’ preceding '83 playoffs

This '82-'83 "Fo-Fo-Fo" team, along with the '95-'96 Bulls WERE the two best team I have ever seen. That is, until this year with the Warriors (58-6 as of 3/12). BUT, this Warriors team still needs to win the title to begin the debate. BTW, one of the best NBA play-by-play men ever calling this game (Eddie Doucette).

I got respect for that whole team possibly the greatest single year team ever. Who sweeps that LA team in 4 games ? Lol they did. But Moses ( the most underrated center ever that I believe no 1 could handle today he would have trashed prime shaq. ). And Tony who for 1 season that he was health was the only player that was as devastating as bird hell bird did better against Jordan then tony

The sixers had Dr. J .Moses Malone. Andrew Toney . Maurice Cheeks. Bobby Jones . Clint Richardson. . Like I said the Bulls had Jordan. Teams with one great player couldn't win back then . When jordan won the league was horrible. Watered-down. I'm just stating facts .

+Poppa Doc Crutchfield Agree with you and Kurt. But remember, this Bucks team -- Marques Johnson, Bob Lanier, Sidney Moncrief, Brian Winters, Junior Bridgeman, Alton Lister and rookie Paul Pressey -- swept the Celtics in 1983. The Sixers with Moses never beat the Celtics in the playoffs.

Yeah, I get tired of hearing how great the Pacers, Jazz and Knicks were in the 1990s, only to be denied a title by Jordan. I don't think Reggie Miller starts in Philly or Milwaukee 1981-87. Pippen sure doesn't, to try to make a relativity point here. Dr. J called it "The Great Misfortune of the Bucks" to be in the East with the Sixers and the Celtics in the early 1980s.

Arguably the greatest team ever? 65-17 reg season in th a era. Only 1 playoff lose 12-1 ! Went up 3-0 in every series. Id take 86 Boston over them IMO.

Jones , Clemons Johnson , Clinton Richardson. Was a versatile bench those 3 covered all 5 spots..throw in Sedale threat, Earl Cureton playing hard when called on...underrated group
