How hard should you wick? Very hard! Part 2

Real life heat experiment this time, almost sciency :-) Remember to dial down watt with 20% or add another wrap or two to the coil if you use mech mods. And wick as hard as the coil can handle. Consider spaced coils to make sure, by inspection, you don't get new hotspots.
Wick Hard!

My new favorite vaping channel, that's it. Been vaping for a about 12 months and one thing that really really bothered me until now was the amount of "myths" and "axioms" that were told, but without any technical and scientific approach and explanation. Now I found this Nordic guy, explaining the exact way I always wanted, with technical experiments and very empirically. You don't know how much I appreciate the work you've been doing. You got a fan. I just started running a parallel 26g kanthal coil in a new rda and was having trouble with dry hits, I just happened to be watching your video on the Entheon and made my way over to this. Thank you very much for this. I use Muji, tripled my wick thickness and didn't remove the exterior like usual, no dry hits and way more dense and saturated vapour. Subscribed! I hope you'll continue to make videos in future!

Another great video Morten. I've started hammering my kanthal using your technique and I've got to say that I love the flavor and the vapor production. After seeing your wicking videos I've started wicking my flat wire builds tighter. Your ideas work and I love that you've actually done a lot of testing to find out what works the best for you.

Just not as sciency as you just did lol It used to be you want to wick it so you can pull it through with little resistance and you can slide the cotton some without the mod falling over But in my time dripping I found that to not be true So glad someone is proving this!

I have been vaping with cellucotton and a vandy vape mesh RDA which allows a very very tight wick because you install 1 end of mesh then cotton then wrap the mesh around. Your sound experiment in a tight wick is exactly as I have gotten from trial and error. I have found for mesh the tighter the better. Great job

Hello Morten. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for these series of videos. I'm new to RDA building and have moved from using cotton with aglets (Firebolt, Wotofo XFiber, Cotn Threads). I have a Lost Vape Drone with a Recurve Dual running Quad Core Fused Claptons that build around .13-.14. I've struggled with wicking over the last few days when following the accepted style of wicking more loosely. Since wicking more loosely, I've noticed much more gurgle and spitback, the flavor fades very quickly and I have to squonk much more. Also the cotton dries out after a couple of hits. By wicking much more tightly I get minimal gurgle and spitback and it's the best for flavor. I run less wattage and get more dense and warm vapor. The cotton also stays saturated much longer. Thank you again for taking the time to create this series. It's made a huge difference in the consistency and quality of my vape. Much respect to you sir!

Wasp nano rda, single coil, 0.18 ohms, 42 watts, half airflow, 3.5 mm dia 22ga ni80 3 wraps, 1.5mm wrap spacing. Both on cotton bacon prime. Split into 4, parallel to the strains, then cut in half for each coil. Scottish rolling, extremely tight, no fluffing. Flavor is amazing. Ridiculous!

Thanks again for such informative vids. *Food for thought* I tried wicking harder and saw an improvement but like you I found it frustratingly hard to put the wick in..SO, I took a 20/80 PG/VG, no nicotine or flavoring and wet the thicker wick enough to compress it and make insertion much easier. Once in, I noticed the new wick growing dark with my flavored ejuice in the tank. The first side was almost to the coil before I could finish positioning the other side. The setup is a Wismec RX Gen3 with a Vandyvape Perseus on top with one .95 ohm Fused Clapton (Demon Killer) coil at 25 watts. Before, and using a fluffy wick I found the top outside of the wick would touch the cover and ejuice would build up there and char. I think this 'hard wicking' will solve that problem. Thanks again and keep on experimenting. ;-)

Have to say I agree with your hypothesis - it makes sense. Similarly the bubble size will constrain the wave length of the formed sounds, similar to how a tweeter has a smaller cone than a subwoofer because the wavelengths are smaller. It's like a mechanical signal filter

I've had a couple of bocks tonight and couldn't go into the scientific element, but Morten it is very nice to see a contrary perspective to what's considered the "status quo" in the vaping community. Too much information whether false or positive is pushed as the "only" way without any afterthought or dispute, most of the time even evidence and research. I hope you can continue to make us all think a little differently.

Another great video Morten 👍 I have actually been wicking very tight for the last year or so. I feel it prevents popping and it holds more juice, so I don’t need too drip as often. I saw a video from rip tripper where he showed a Scottish roll wicking technique. Your videos are very interesting and I’m glad I found your canal.
@mortenoen434
@mortenoen434 6 жыл бұрын
Hei Halvor! The Scottish roll did not perform great in my first experiment, almost worst. But yes, if you get in a piece of pad 3-4 times the diameter of the coil the popping and spatter is totally gone. Unless you se a Kennedy. I have found a nasty flaw in the Kennedy design....
@mortenoen434
@mortenoen434 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and according to Jurins law (again), and my observations when I picked the roll apart, the juice followed the narrowest path first, so the roll only wicked in the center of it, and did not spread out to the coil like the other ones.

I've been enjoying these videos on wicking and I think your methods are pretty good. What I've been thinking about is those methods in application inside the wide range of atomizers out there. I've been using rebuildables exclusively for about 2 years and have experimented quite a bit with coil placement and wicking, and for the atties I use, moderate wick with thinner tails has been most successful. For RDAs, I can use much more wick than anything with a juice reservoir. My favorite atomizer at the moment is the Serpent RDTA. Increasing the wick in my coil choked it off completely and I started getting dry hits in no time. I went back to my usual method of thinning and trimming the tails so that there's much less volume in that part of the wick than the part in the coil. Still, I can't go super tight with my wick because the amount of cotton in the tails that will wick fast enough doesn't carry enough juice to the cotton in the coil to keep it saturated if it's super tight. I've experienced the same thing in the Serpent RTA and the Govad RTA. The Griffin 22, oddly, I can always jam with cotton and it wicks fine. I think this may be in part due to the chamber shape. So outside of simple RDAs, where we're getting into reduced chambers, juice channels, and bends and pressure on our cotton, what principles still apply to guide us?
@mortenoen434
@mortenoen434 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nishidake! First of all, I know nothing about tanks. I can only answer by the feedback I have gotten lately, and all who has crammed as much cotton in their RDTAs and RTAs as they dare, report great results. My testing shows that the longer the path the juice has to travel from the well, the more together the wick ends should be. Bends or curves are no hinderings. For travel distances shorter than 12-14mm from the source, the ends of the wick should be undisturbed. Shorter than 8mm you can spread the ends a little. In all these cases, a bigger wick sucks up more juice, and faster, and retains more juice inside the actual coil. Bigger is better, harder is better, and over certain longer distances, regardless of bends and curves, keeping the wick ends together is better than spreading them out or thinning them out. I dont know if this is the answer you were looking for, but maybe others here can chime in:-)

Morten, you have started something here that is hard to put away. An additional thought about hard wicking. How about creating a 'wick rope' ? I've taken 3 equal lengths of the amount of cotton I would have usally use one and after inserting fluffed it up. Holding one end of the 3 wicks together I started twisting one clockwise and wrapping it counter-clockwise around the other 2. Continuing until I reached the other end. The end result was a 3mm cotton wick rope. Then threaded and kind of pulled and turned it with the twist as I pulled it through. Afterwards, I realized that had I reversed the initial process...i.e. twisting each strand counter-clockwise and wrapping clockwise that I could have just started the wick through the coil and screwed it in while maintaining a pull on the insertion end. With this setup I am using a Wismec RX Gen 3 with an SXK 1:1 Haku Phenom, a single Demon Killer .48 ohm fused clapton at 40 watts, drawing 4.38 volts and 9.1 amps. The flavor and cloud production is good. I also have a ramp-up/pre-heat set to 60 watts for 0.2 seconds. I don't know how to attach a photo but if you are interested we could figure out a way to get a pic to you. The wick build looks strange with it twisting into the coil but it is swelling with ejuice and presently shows no signs of burning. Time will tell. Thanks again for your vids. I will keep you up to date on my experiments.

Thanks for input, Weeks! Sorry for making everybody looking at their cotton again:-) I have thought about brading and twisting and fluffing. My experiments shows that straight and hard, and no fluffing works the fastest. It would be very interesting if you found a different result. Please report back when you find out more, and we can maybe set up an experiment together. Best regards, M-)

Wish you would have stated the BRAND of the Japanese Cotton. I have found there to be substantial differences between brands, with "Koh Gen Do" brand being the best. Especially when taking into account things like flavor neutrality, lack of bleaches (safety), and scorch resistance. I have found that "Koh Gen Do" is more likely to survive dry hits than other cheaper brands. It also has a cleaner taste and is the purest and safest JOC on the market. IMHO

Thank you Oen. I'm using 24ga nichrome, so if I understood correctly you say a heavier guage wire will burn a tighter wick? I'll have to rewatch the video but if i recall you recomend using 32ga and finer? what is your opinion on coil spacing? I'll keep watching more of your videos.
@mortenoen434
@mortenoen434 6 жыл бұрын
If you use claptons, you should have at least a wrap wire of 38g-40g. 32g is too coarse, and will trip the air and send it everywhere. 24g is good for flat wire, but I like 22g better. When you wick very tight, having a spaced coil prevents hotspots. I have like 0.3mm or less of spacing, just so I can see that the wraps don't touch each other. For flavor it does not matter if you use compressed or spaced. It's just safer for the very tight wicking.
@blitzhacker6981
@blitzhacker6981 6 жыл бұрын
Have you considered that perhaps that adding more wicking materials (thicker wick/tighter) allowed for a better plume/vapor production due to more eliquid already being available to vaporize at the coil. Have you done any tests on the actual wicking speed of the tighter coils under heat, as this test is already pre-saturated. I'm just curious if when gravity isn't an issue (usually wicking horizontially and heat is applied, which speed would the liquid wick to the center/coil. I'm more curious if the more threads actually increase the pull of the ejuice or this wicking gain is due to the 'bandwidth' of the cotton being added in (more strands = more volume/surface area to wick up.
@mortenoen434
@mortenoen434 6 жыл бұрын
I have figured all these things out, yes. Some answers are in the commentary. It's complicated, so let's keep it simple. Wicking tight is almost always better due to more pressure, less juice in the coil, faster transport of juice to the coil, bigger wick ends, to mention a few. Gravity is a factor at 12mm or higher (in most vaping sitations). If you do your own experiments you can figure out the rest. It takes you an hour or two :-)

Again, most excellent experiment and information, amigo. I will be getting away from my staggered fused claptons now for a while and back to some simpler round wire SS builds to run these tests for myself. The problem with the massive metal coils for me is the core heat not disappating quickly enough and resulting in the core cotton inside the coil burning out over a short time leaving good wick at the end of the coil and a hollow center. Spaced is somewhat better but still the heat retained in the big metal is an ongoing issue. Looking forward to some testing myself. Your experiments with wicking has been very helpful.

My best flavour and cloud experience is, that 18mm wide japanese cotton pads with removed top & bottom layers works best with ø3.5mm of the following coils. Kanthal: 4x (0.8x0.1mm flat) + 2x 0.4mm round, twisted, 7 wraps, Ω0.16, 96 Watt's - inside a Vandy Vape Pulse or Pyro & 1mm space between bottom to coils, between coils and coils and Airflow pipes. It tastes like you put the liquid direct into the mouth, and the clouds are like in a Disco club. :-) (It can't be compared with a Goon 1.5 & same coil and cotton setup. Goon is less effective.) >>All kind's of claptons as well as staggered are not doing any good for me. My coils are my favorites, and I've build many different kind's

It is not that straight forward with tanks. Some have great results, other have a lot of dry hits. Dry hits might happen if you have too much cotton in the channels. When I wick tanks for testing I always use my twizers to make a little hole or dent in the cotton where it goes through the channel and down to the lower deck. One guy told me he used a tint roll of mesh to make a snorkle in the channels.

Morten Oen oh dear, I already had a lot of trouble with my ammit 25 leaking and it was all due to wicking, is there some middle ground for hard wicking on a tank such as ammit 25? Fluffy ends helped me last time, maybe make that dent and fluff into the well?

I very rearly use tanks, for al the reasons you mention:-) You just have to experiment. You can also read all the comments in this thread and in the third part of this video series. The subject has been brought up before.

I wonder if the same is true for RTAs, given enough deck space?

Reports I get are very positive. A guy over at reddit made a sort of snorkel from metal mesh in an RTA. Others thin out or use angles. I have no idea what any of that means, but over all I get good feedback fro RTA users.

You can actually do this yourself :-) All you need is a camera with micophone, or a telephone. Then take the sound file into Audacity. This is free software. It's very easy. Please share the results!

Morten Oen I was not clear, sorry. In the video you recommend against doing that (wicking hard) on bigger/complex coils. My question is whats the reason for that.

My bad:-) My thought process at that time was wrong. Just a little blunder. The idea was that tight wicking might cause hotspots on compressed coils, due to the movement itn the coil when you drag the cotton through. It's easy to fix it it happens, just identify where the hotspot is, and pry the wraps appart slightly with a screwdriver :-) Wick tight no matter what coil you use!
