I have done aditional experiments after this. The distance from the bottom of your well to the top of your coil is critical. Here is my Law of Fluffing: 1. Never fluff, you just destroy the fibres. 2. If the distance is less than 11mm, spread the ends slightly. 3. For distances between 11-15mm, leave the cotton alone. 4. For distances more than 15mm, press or roll your cotton wick ends gently together. 5. Do your own experiment, with the wicking material you use.
These numbers are for organic Japanese cotton pads bought in bulk.
Just watch the video, and look at the length and speed the different wicks are good at.

might be a coincidence, but it looks to me like the tightness has an effect on the end portion of the video. It looks like the wicks with the most juice at the top are also the loosest in the holes, which could be choking the wick. If you watch you can see the ones with juice at the top sliding in the hole while the dry ones are more snug. The sliding could also be from the juice lubricating the hole.

I'm so glad it was # 6. I cut strip out of pad(or rip off piece of bacon) about size of coil hole, take off outer layers, mist my hands with spray bottle and dry so they are just tacky, then in one nice motion role wick, or 2 or 3 times, then spin ends into points, put through coil then pull. Any tighter I would have to hold coil. I now am trying to see if I can get away with cutting ends and dropping in because my habit has been to slightly comb with mustache comb, snip, then agitate cut mark back open. That's always worked great but If I can skip those end steps that would be good.I use 26/36 fused or 28/38 triple or quad fused. Ss from advanced vape supply. Slightly Spaced 3mm id 6 wraps. Thanks for videos! Will try to update.

My first impression on this new learning from Oen... I managed to pass a 12mm cut strip of organic pad through a 3mm diameter 24ga, 6 turns round wire coil inside my Gorge. This is basically the same amount of cotton I already used to cut.. BUT, I used to remove the outer layers (both sides) and I used to pinch/roll one side while holding the other side, to fluff the whole strip. And after cutting the sides to the size I wanted, I used to comb each side and then cut the excess fuzzies. I figured out that when removing both outer layers these 12mm were the "right" amount desired to reach that usual not-loose-not-tight point. But WITHOUT removing these layers, these 12mm almost messed up my build. It's really really really tight now and almost no crackling at all. Dialed down from 40W to 30W and with a nice warm vapor. Flavor is really good and steady, without juice spitting in my mouth now I can really judge the real flavor from my juice, only the vapor, and not the liquid. Very satisfied!
@BobWilliam
@BobWilliam 6 жыл бұрын
But one thing I have to say... having to manipulate my cotton so vigorously to pass it through the coil, I think my hands passed something to the cotton that messed up a little bit of the flavor. And I washed my hands very well before doing the wicking work. Next time I'll test with gloves.

Great trilogy. I know you don't like tanks, but some of us use rtas almost exclusively. I have always had trouble with my rtas dry hitting if i don't thin out the cotton where it covers the juice ports. I like to keep the juice ports thinned, but then have it tighter in the top part of the juice well. I would really like to see an experiment proving that to be the incorrect way of wicking an rta. Awesome, informative videos as always.

That really put me down for a day or two. But if I by some kind cruel blow from destiny get one in my hands, I'll pick it apart and figure it out:-)

great series. I'm going to play around with my wicks to see how it works for me. I usually remove one side of the cotton, scottish roll and fluff my ends. your method is much easier. Never used a tank? merely curious... when you first started vaping (I think I heard you say you've been vaping at least a couple of years) you learned to build and wrap a coil, learned ohms law etc. before you took your first hit? Also it seems your first vape experience would likely have been sub-ohm. just seems a little odd. most people start with some sort of tank, learn how to vape (since vaping is a bit different from smoking in terms of how you inhale etc.) and then progressively move on to rda's etc. Unless you have a squonk rda it's simply not practical for most of us to drip all day/night. there is driving, work and all sorts of activities to contend with which make dirpping impractical.

I also hate tanks but for a different reasons. I vape 0 nic only so a tank can last for days. I find the heat over a short period of time 'cooks' the juice in the tank and ruins the flavour. They're ugly for the most part and all are easy to break.

What about peeling the outer "pressed" layers on the outside of the pad off? I know some people swear by it saying that it just leaves the fluffy stuff that is better at wicking and gets rid of the compressed bits that are worse. Also, would you mind showing a clip of you actually rewicking a coil to better demonstrate the snugness?
@BloodrageEngage

Oh, and I know you tend to go for flavor, what are your opinions on vg/pg ratios? Ive heard people say pg is better for carrying flavor, but you use 80/20. Do you find that pg isnt as important? Most of the juices I have tried are 70/30-80/20. I have found some 70/30s to be really flavorful and some to be duds in the flavor department. Same with 80/20s, some flavorful and some less, so it's not super conclusive for me.
@mortenoen434
@mortenoen434 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, The outer layer should stay on. In combination with the fluffy cotton it's like a wick in a wick. It's no good on its own, and the fluffy cotton is better with it still there. I squeece a 14 mm broad strip of cotton pad through a 4mm diameter coil. 3 times the diameter is a good indication of the tightness. Regarding fluffing, for the most part, in most RDA's, leave the cotton undisturbed, unless the coils are really high up, then you should squize it gently together. I will do no more cotton videos. Sorry :-) But I still do a lot of experiments with it. The new experiments is just fine tuning this stuff, and the data is only valid for me.

Hello morten, Greetings from India. This super tight wicking doesn't seem to work for flavour on my entheon clone. There is vapour but no flavour. Also I did watch your video on the entheon coil placement and I wanted to know if you have a picture of how your coil looks at the correct position and how you get it there because the edges of the atty doesn't allow me to pull the coil down to that height with a coil tool. I was wondering if you have any updated thoughts on the same.

@mortenoen434 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I use a flatwire coil, it's very thin, and you can just push gently on the coil legs to get it down. And place it upside-down. It is not difficult, and if you make your own coils, like I do, it is very cheap to experiment a day or two to get what you want. Good luck!

Wish you would have stated the BRAND of the Japanese Cotton. I have found there to be substantial differences between brands, with "Koh Gen Do" brand being the best. Especially when taking into account things like flavor neutrality, lack of bleaches (safety), and scorch resistance. I have found that "Koh Gen Do" is more likely to survive dry hits than other cheaper brands. It also has a cleaner taste and is the purest and safest JOC on the market. IMHO

Cotton bacon v2 doesn't let you twist crap. I fluffed it and added a lot of cotton.. But I use mesh and no coils... Got any techniques for mesh? I need a cotton that holds juice.. I stacked a lot onto the MESH coil into a RDTA. Works great but cotton bacon v2 doesn't full more out of the tank fast enough or enough for more then 2-4 hits every few minutes . Sub 70w
@mortenoen434

I do not use mesh, I have never liked it, and I have a handful of mesh RDAs. You might not like my suggestion, but here it is: With all my mesh RDAs I have gotten the best results when installing flat wire coils in the clamps, and using cheapo muji cotton. Most mesh RDAs will let you do this, and the results are way better than with mesh. These RDAs have lots of air holes, and that is perfect for a big flatwire coil. Just think outside the box, and you will figure it out:-)

Stay with 20g and 22g and 24g wire, and about 3-5 wraps. Change resistanse by using SS or Kanthal metal. This way you rarely have to hammer more than 5cm of the wire, and leave the legs semi-flat. Best of luck!

@@mortenoen434 No, thanks to you! I have been building it the way you are, calculating the circumference to find how long should I flattened it. 22 g kanthal for dual, 22g ss for single ones. Still taking me 20-30 mins for each coil. 0.15-0.22ohms usually. With the recent mtl rda/rta "boom", would your wicking and hand-hammered methods would work? Just tried it on chtulhu 1928 rda, the wick got burnt so fast on 0.8ohms, hand-hammered 26g kanthal, restricted airflow, 17 watts, 3.3volts. Not enough airflow to cool the coil?

I do appreciate the information. Are you familiar with the Scottish roll wicking method? According to your experiment, that sounds to be best. I also did not understand your conclusion on the coil type video. I saw the videos but I did not know which one was better or recommended The flat wire, or something like a fused Clapton(with 40 gauge). I also thought the argument of, "You did not use heat" in your wicking experiment to be funny. It makes no difference. The heat will just dry up the cotton and the wicking will take effect. The focus is the wicking.

1 that wasn't so much fluffing the cotton as it was just splitting it in half 2 where is the simulation for heat that your coils would produce and create a capillary action 🤔
@mortenoen434
@mortenoen434 6 жыл бұрын
1. The fluffing was for real. Maybe one of the outer layers in the cotton, or the angle of the camera tricks the eye. 2. Heat does not create capillary action. Heat can make some liquids more or less viscuos. It is the density of the fibres that decides how fast and high capillary action works when all else is equal. This was just a re-run of an experiment done in the 16th century. What I have proven is very old knowledge.

Yes sir.. I found out about this method a while back... it's what made the scottish roll wicking method so popular.. I have done research and heard people saying they have had success in rdtas, rtas, etc but looser.. I unfortunately have never found that to be true. Anything that requires extensive traveling of juice doesn't seem to wick fast enough.. My favorite method on rdas is very very short wick.. just enough to touch the tip of the deck with massive, thick, tight wicking. I've used this method for years. I find it uses the full potential of the wick... I can use every drop of juice in that cotton and make it look white as snow before I need to add juice.
